It wasn't a different time that much. It is simply that people had been raised to apply different standards to the Royal Family

Also that they had no way of knowing just how seldom the RF applied those standards to themselves
Come forward to 1936 if you like, when just about the only country that didn't know about Wallis Simpson was ours, or any number of other things now instantly found through social media

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/01/2022 13:40

Anyway, what I want to know is what the RF will produce as a diversion from all this. Kate in a pretty dress is hardly going to cut it, and while the Queen's death will be a distraction I hardly think they'll bump her off to suit

It's also not as if there'll be any huge weddings for a while and I can't see W&K having more kids now, so what's left?

SerendipityJane · 13/01/2022 13:45

George V was euthanised to fit in with the press schedule of the day.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/01/2022 13:49

George V was euthanised to fit in with the press schedule of the day

I know, Jane, but he genuinely was actively dying (or so they said - who knows?)

I'd like to think they wouldn't pull the same stunt again, but frankly I'm past being surprised with this lot

PlanktonsComputerWife · 13/01/2022 13:52

I do see what you're saying, Nice, but two teenagers falling in love is SUCH a different scenario from the crimes that took place at Epstein's mansion, though. I don't think they're remotely comparable.

VG was not trafficked by JE at 14, though. She alleged in her 2009 suit that she was 15 when first recruited and attacked by Epstein, but later admitted she'd made a mistake and was 16. (It's thought that such inconsistencies were partly why she was not asked to be a prosecution witness in the Ghislaine Maxwell case.)

Regardless of her age, it is horrific if she was lent out like a toy to Epstein's cronies.

Roussette · 13/01/2022 14:24

And let's not forget the three 12 year olds given to JE as a birthday present, shipped over from a poor family in Paris.
If he can do that, how can anyone doubt VG was trafficked. There was a pattern of disgusting behaviour that included her and all the other young victims.

That's a fun thought! What indeed? Royal Glastonbury with Kate headlining. Glamping and yurt farms on the Royal Estates. Monarchist inclusion workshops for kids, where the boys can wear 1940s shorts and shoot grouse for their sisters to roast and stuff. Wills channels the Bear Grylls vibe and does survivalist tours for bored city execs. Andrew and Sarah offering advanced financial management courses. They could really go to town with it!

PlanktonsComputerWife · 13/01/2022 14:39

Oh don't give them ideas.Grin

Chaz did launch an exhibition of his watercolour paintings yesterday. (No, seriously, he did.) How the populace were amazed.Wink

AllThePogs · 13/01/2022 14:56

They might decide to rewild a small grouse moor with lots of fanfare publicity. Chris Packham has been lobbying them about this for a while. The other big publicity affair is the Earthshot Prize which is supposed to be in America this year. I don't know what they will do about that?
I suspect there will be lots of engineered attacks on Meghan and Harry again.
Oh no, they are disrespecting the Queen by not coming over for the Jubilee celebrations.
Oh no, they are disrespecting the Queen by coming over for the Jubilee celebrations and making it all about them.
Alongside articles about the dress fitting incident six years ago, Harry breaking the Queen's heart with the Oprah interview, and how Harry and Meghan's marriage is about to break down and it is all that scheming Meghan's fault.
I know people who believe all this shit.

AllThePogs · 13/01/2022 14:57

Royal Glastonbury is not a bad idea. But there is too little time to organise it well. So the press would talk it up, but it would compare dismally to other festivals.

Roussette · 13/01/2022 15:07

My DD is off to Glasto this year... is Kate headlining? I need to tell her if so! She'll be made up! not

She could play the piano while a big star sings?

Ina ll seriousness though, festivals for the summer have done all their planning by now and booked most acts. You would be left with the scraps or begging elderly stars to come out of retirement.

Some new information

Virginia Giuffre's attorney to judge:

"Now that Maxwell’s criminal trial has come and gone, there is little reason to retain protection over the vast swaths of information about Epstein and Maxwell’s sex-trafficking operation that were originally filed under seal in this case."

This is from a new civil filing from the CIVIL lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, which remains the subject of an open-records battle.

Roussette · 13/01/2022 15:28

That could be interesting, thanks Duncin

This is funny....
The Queen finally gets good news after Royal Family member announces engagement
Congratulations! The Queen's distant cousin, Lady Tatiana Mountbatten, is the latest member of the Royal Family to become engaged.

Who, in the name of all that is holy, is Lady Tatiana Mountbatten? This is the Express, poor things with such a feeble diversionary tactic!

OP posts:
AllThePogs · 13/01/2022 15:35

Nobody will care about her. Few will have even heard of her.

SerendipityJane · 13/01/2022 15:39

I googled Mountbatten:

let's hope no one else does, eh ? Express ?

Vanity Fair has published an article about why Camilla should be called the Queen after our current Queen dies.

www.vanityfair.com/style/2022/01/camilla-the-controversial-figure-who-may-become-queen

This will be part of Charles campaign to make sure Camilla is styled as the Queen. I agree she should be, but don't care that much. But this debate may provide a bit of distraction. If I was the Royal PR I would be leaking stories that Harry and Meghan thought the opposite of the general public mood.

Roussette · 13/01/2022 15:44

I'm sure she is perfectly pleasant but the Express calls her 'a member of the royal family'
If that's the case, Charles needs to get going with the slimming down sharpish!

AllThePogs · 13/01/2022 15:45

She is the daughter of a cousin of the Queen. Not really relevant.

Curious to think there are people alive who can recall the scandal of Eddie VIII and Mrs. Simpson. I wonder what they'd think ?

Malibuismysecrethome · 13/01/2022 15:50

“Roussette* the 12 year old triplets trafficked for JE and the model agency boss seem to be forgotten don’t they? Maybe because of their age at the time and right to privacy, but this is so shocking but seems to be being ignored.

Interesting. I suppose the drawback would be if a mistrial were declared in the GM case-- would this jeopardise the chances of a retrial? Presumably it was sealed in the first place because it would be too prejudicial?

I was just about to post an article that says the same as @DuncinToffee Twitter link and I had exactly the same thoughts as you @PlanktonsComputerWife - maybe prh47bridge will come along later and be able to shed some light?

I've just remembered Stuart Hall too. I wonder if Andrew had him on speed dial ?
