What on earth is going on with Princess Charlene of Monaco?

The latest update doesn't seem to make a huge amount of sense - a sinus infection has kept her away from Monaco since January? I understand that would mean you couldn't fly, but surely someone with her status would be offered another mode of transport to return to her children?
She doesn't look well in the video, I hope it's just poorly shot and that she's not seriously poorly.

I’m the latest photos on her Instagram she is stood with him, she’s wearing a head scarf under her hat and looks quite unwell. Hopefully not!

My understanding is that the Monaco reign continuance is subject to a male heir (note Grace and Raiñier having 3 children, the youngest being male and inheriting.)

Does that mean that Charlene's daughter does not actually count as a "spare".

She is the spare, despite being the eldest. They prefer male heirs, but do allow female ones.

They're a funny country with their strict rules on who can and can't succeed - which they just chop and change if they don't like them.

Prince Rainier changed the law to ensure that Albert adopting one of his illegitimate children (after marrying their mother) didn't allow them to become his legitimate heir. Even though that is how his own mother - born illegitimately and adopted at 20 by her father not completely in compliance with the law - became heir. Though she never became the reigning Princess of Monaco as she stepped aside for her son to be Hereditary Prince when he turned 21 so Rainier succeeded his grandfather.

Charlene looks very unwell. Hopefully there's nothing serious going on there and it's a decision she has made.

The daily Mail are saying that the palace have announced albert and the children will stay with her while she recovers and I had the horrible thought that maybe her illness is terminal and that’s why they’ve gone and will stay. I really really really hope I’m wrong but I did think god if she looks this poorly in the ones they deemed best to release what were the other ones like?

I thought the photos looked so sad. She looked frail, the children looked puzzled, Albert I'm just not sure.
I just hope she reaches some happiness and that she is OK.

She doesn’t look at all well. Poor thing. Hope she recovers soon.

Sadly I thought the same.

The "headscarf" looks the same as the bandanna he's wearing around his neck. Maybe it's just something to catch sweat with since it must be pretty hot under a leather hat in direct sunlight. She clearly has hair in the professional photos so it wouldn't make sense for her to be wearing a headscarf in other ones.

But still feel ver sorry for her children as they must be quite confused about the separation and why they have spent almost a year away from their mum.

I hope she recovers and the children are happy. I’ve never understood the vitriol towards Albert. He’s a philanderer, of course, but he’s not a monster. From what I’ve read he’s a lovely man who is close to his sisters and their children.

August is winter in South Africa certainly not hot enough to sweat, a maximum of 25 degrees.

She looks so very ill !

Seems she collapsed at home and was rushed to hospital and is now stable. Something more than sinus issue definitely going.

The whole thing is just so very very odd.

Apparently he took the kids on holiday to Corsica prior to their quick trip to SA, arrived on Sat and left on Wednesday, and then took them on another trip to the Dordogne in France when they returned from SA.

I just don't get it, if she is is as ill as she looks, why have they not all relocated to SA so they can support her and be together as a family.

Surely the children are desperately missing their mother as well?

Alarming and sad turn of events. I read an article today that she was actually planning to return to Monaco earlier than expected. It wasn't an english language newspaper so no point linking it but it was mostly a fluff piece saying how Albert expects Charlene to return in Sept instead of Oct which was originally planned. The reason was that her recovery was going better than expected. That's why the latest news hit quite hard and seems to imply that not all is well.

It seems more likely that she is very ill and wants to spend the final stretch with her children. I know three people in real life who kept their cancer diagnosis and treatments secret (two from their children and another from their closest friends & relatives) so it's surprisingly common. Having the world's media pry into your life makes it even more complicated unfortunately. I think Charlene released those pictures as a way of telling but not telling the world what is going on. She must know how ill she appears there so it's more of signal to those who recognise it.

Maybe she's the one who didn't want it that way. Her twins are only 6 so maybe there was hope that she could complete her treatment/recovery and return home without them having to see her suffer. I know someone whose parent underwent cancer treatment when they were 8-9 (older than the twins) and they never realised what was going on at the time.

She doesn't look very happy to be embracing Albert in that picture with the hats. Based on what others have posted, it may be that she didn't see the children very often even when she was in Monaco. If she's not going to see them much either way, then she might prefer to spend her treatment or final days near her family of origin, whom she's presumably seeing frequently.
