The more that comes out about the panorama interview and the way things were invented/forged. Bank statements, telephone records, stories about the family to encourage Diana to talk to Bashir. I just cannot believe what is emerging from this, things that would have influenced me if I had been Diana and no-one verified it independently.

I thought that Diana died in a car accident? It sounds like the BBC treated her badly but come on. That's a huge stretch. She'd already had 15 years of the RF and a load of secret recordings and 'friends' selling stories to the papers. As if this led to a sudden lack of trust in humanity. She died because the driver of her car was drunk and because she didn't wear a seatbelt.
It led to specific mistrust of her own staff and police protection officers, because of detailed allegations that were made about them all by Bashir.

So she had no police protection after her divorce and also lost loyal staff like Patrick Jephson. These were people who protected her, sometimes even from herself.

Police protection in particular are so good at their jobs because they are answerable to Police top brass - not the principal they protect- so just won’t allow their VIP to get into dangerous situations. Yet she ditched hers and refused to reconsider.

That makes a very direct connection between Bashir and Paris.

She was only in a car with a drunk driver because of the fallout from the interview which we now know was obtained by deception and deliberate exploitation of her vulnerability at the time.

Poor poor William and Harry. The hurt is still so raw, and unresolved.

Really made me stop and think about Harry and his recent actions - why he is upset at not getting security, and him wanting to control his narrative in the media.

I feel personally deceived too. I watched that interview thinking Diana was talking open and honestly, not because she had been wound up by a pack of lies. I feel almost complicit, and that I've been taken for a mug.

Horehound · 20/05/2021 22:52

I watched a documentary Diana months ago and it was revealed about the bank statements being faked. I don't know why this is so shocking today when it's been known for a while?

She had lines planned which were designed to embarrass Charles and make her look sassy and cool. So I don't think she was scared onto doing it. I think she was really looking forward to doing it

justasking111 · 20/05/2021 22:53

Bashir said, Charles got the nanny pregnant, Prince Edward had Aids, Dianas phone was tapped, her cars tracked, The queen had a bad heart and was a comfort eater.

I think the Dyson report will trickle down to the press and we will learn more in time.

He didn’t just fake two bank statements. He told Diana and her brother a load of lies about people around her, her family, people who worked for her, resulting in her became paranoid and not trusting anyone around her. A direct consequence of that was her refusing royal protection officers. She wouldn’t have been in a car with a drunk driver, she’d have had a royal protection officer driving her.

Horehound · 20/05/2021 22:54

@PinkTonic she was on the car because she was out with her new lover though? I don't see that as being the fallout from the interview.
She had moved on with her life. :/

Horehound · 20/05/2021 22:55

But what I don't understand is what the fake bank statements actually did? Why were they even required?!

colouringindoors · 20/05/2021 22:57

What. A. Mess.

Interestedparty132 · 20/05/2021 22:57

Really? Because I thought she was there because she was on holiday with her boyfriend. It was his driver.

Andante57 · 20/05/2021 22:57

but yet no focus on the present day, ongoing hounding of another mentally fragile member of the same family? Right now? Still happening? Meh

I agree the way the press hound Meghan and others is appalling as is the hate on the internet.
However Martin Bashir committed fraud and forgery under the umbrella of the state broadcaster and I bet there were other occasions when he and other BBC employees used similar methods.
Just because people are hounded by the media today doesn’t mean that past crimes shouldn’t be investigated.

LizzieSiddal · 20/05/2021 22:57

Horehound why don’t you go and read the report put out today? You’ll understand what’s actually going on then.

CommanderBurnham · 20/05/2021 22:58

@Horehound. Yes, I'm no doubt she did if she believed the forged evidence given to her. I'd plot my revenge.

Bashir took advantage of a woman in trouble.

Maybe if she had better security provided by the Royal Family, her driver would not be drunk and might have insisted she put her belt on, or handled the papparazzi better with better intelligence and training. Instead, because she was in the false belief that Royal protection couldn't be trusted, she trusted someone else.

The ramifications are appalling.

Andante57 · 20/05/2021 22:59

Kick the BBC (there are a number of rich and powerful people who will gain from this)

Medebourne which rich and powerful people will gain from this and how will they gain from it?

LizzieSiddal · 20/05/2021 23:00

Really? Because I thought she was there because she was on holiday with her boyfriend. It was his driver.

She wouldn’t have been allowed to be driven by her boyfriend’s drunk driver, if she had kept her royal protection officers. They would have driven her. She got rid of her protection officers because Bashir told her they were giving information about her to the royal family.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/05/2021 23:00

I suspect this will have severe consequences for the BBC too

I doubt it, Ricki; as ever the establishment will look after its own and the government won't want to lose the mouthpiece it funds so lavishly

As I said on another thread, if the BBC escaped scot free from the Savile criticism it'll escape this too, though I'm intrigued by the get out of jail free card Diana letter they've suddenly "found again"

Even though the BBC keep telling us it's all "historic", I wonder how she was persuaded her to write that?

Interestedparty132 · 20/05/2021 23:00

Is this section like those 'Are Di' Facebook groups? Sure sounds like it.

LizzieSiddal · 20/05/2021 23:02

I'm intrigued by the get out of jail free card Diana letter they've suddenly "found again"

The judge doing the review said that letter had no baring on anything, as when Diana wrote it she didn’t realise she had been lied to.

RickiTarr · 20/05/2021 23:03

@Horehound

To gain her trust, wind her up and make her distrust just about everybody around her.

He showed her fake bank statements that made it look as though her staff were accepting large payments from the media, (including her personal protection officer and her office staff). He showed her a faked receipt for an abortion that Tiggy LB allegedly had (she hadn’t). He told her a whole stream of lies about royals and senior staff members. He told her she was being bugged. He told her that the royal family were out to get her and her family. Such a long list of things.

Horehound · 20/05/2021 23:03

@murbblurb

I'm puzzled. Faking up bank statements is appalling, but how did it affect what Diana said at the interview. And how does all this relate to whoever called Henri Paul in to drive drunk, and the decision not to wear seatbelts in a speeding car?
I don't think it does tbh. People are still looking to blame for her death but the reality is she got into a car with a drunk driver that crashed. That is all.
justasking111 · 20/05/2021 23:04

The BBC had the rights to that documentary it would be interesting to know how much £££££ an $$$$$ they have made out of it over the years.

Makes me wonder how Bashir handled Michael Jackson and other interviews. I believe Sarah Palin clipped his wings.

So we're told. I doubt that's really the case though. She also wasn't a member of the RF anymore so not sure why she'd have been given royal protection. Plus she had more than enough money to pay for her own security if she thought the existing ones were betraying her. People had sold stories about her for 15 years before the Bashir interview. She had also used the press herself in various ways. Why was that the one that tipped her over the edge?

RickiTarr · 20/05/2021 23:04

How many times can they duck out of trouble, though? It’s all adding up now, and the future King is fuming.
Horehound · 20/05/2021 23:04

@RickiTarr thank you for explaining.
Jesus Christ that is beyond the pale. I hope he is sued.

longwayoff · 20/05/2021 23:05

More cleansing of the Augean stables that is the Royal Family. Everything is the fault of the media, especially the wicked BBC, and all royal family members are just hapless victims of fate who've been deceived by the reptiles of journalism. Got it, thanks. Meanwhile, in Pizza Express, Woking . . .
