I am not a royalist, but I thought today was really special. One thing that struck me though was the high heels. They could barely walk in them, especially on the cobbles. Isn't it a shame that women have to torture themselves like this.

I think the point is that the Queen probably doesn't give a rats ass what they wear. She had enough shit over Andys and Harry's outfits.

So wouldn't it have been nice if B and E had just gone along with the norm, no matter, just because that's what granny would be happy with. No point to be made. Just go with it. Same as they wore black. Same as no one pitched up in their best joggers.

HandsIntoTheFire · 17/04/2021 21:23

Neither exclusively breastfeeding it seems

The horror.

HandsIntoTheFire · 17/04/2021 21:24

Were all the men in suitable attire or is it just the women getting it so terribly wrong?

Urgh this. Gross thread.

gingerandproud4always · 17/04/2021 21:24

Neither exclusively breastfeeding it seems

How can you come to this conclusion?

LookItsMeAgain · 17/04/2021 21:25
@DareIask how do you know they didn't ask her?
Based on the flack that Megan got when she wore tights at one of her first royal engagements, I think there is a royal protocol on whether tights or stockings (think it's more likely to be tights though) are worn and what colour at particular events.

I didn't think black tights were worn by any member of the royal family. I thought it had to be flesh colour and this was where the 'issue' with Megan and her tights stemmed from. The 'flesh' colour wasn't dark enough for her skin tone, or something like that.

HandsIntoTheFire · 17/04/2021 21:25

Same as no one pitched up in their best joggers

Yeah that’s the same.

TokyoSushi · 17/04/2021 21:25

I thought that they all looked amazing.

Maggiesfarm · 17/04/2021 21:26

I am always amazed at how well young women walk in such high heels. I used to wear heels, still do sometimes, but never that high! They walk so beautifully in them too. I'd sprain my ankle in five minutes.

tickingthebox73 · 17/04/2021 21:27

@felulageller

I feel sorry for Eugenie and Zara that they had to go so soon after giving birth. Neither exclusively breastfeeding it seems.
If that had been me baby would have been with a nanny in a separate car and I would have fed them as soon as I was back in private (away from cameras). Entirely do-able. I would have been very surprised if both babies weren't near at hand to be honest - although you wouldn't have seen them.
MmeLaraque · 17/04/2021 21:27

@NerrSnerr

Can't bloody win can they, wrong shoes, wrong tights, not feeding their baby's correctly.

Were all the men in suitable attire or is it just the women getting it so terribly wrong?

This.
tickingthebox73 · 17/04/2021 21:28

The babies would be a good distraction for the Queen too.... I bet they were in the castle.

DelphiniumBlue · 17/04/2021 21:29

I noticed that their heels were not just heels, but super high stilettos. It was noticeable that they couldn't walk properly in them.
I did wonder what they had 6 inch rather than, say, 3 inch heels.
I suspect it's just fashion - really high heels or flats, nothing in between.

Heyduggi · 17/04/2021 21:30

I thought they looked lovely

Peregrina · 17/04/2021 21:31

They didn't have to wear high heels - they chose to. Notice how Princess Anne knowing that she would be walking wore some sensible shoes.

I loved it when Diana came on the scene and you could get fashionable shoes with low heels.

IsThePopeCatholic · 17/04/2021 21:31

I think high heels are dreadful examples of women being subjected to men’s fetishisation. I’ve never worn them, not even when I got married. Why hobble when you can run?

KillingMeDeftly · 17/04/2021 21:32

I never saw a single article about tights protocol or nail polish etc until Meghan came on the scene. It's almost as if the media invented it as a stick with which to beat her!

VienneseWhirligig · 17/04/2021 21:33

I watched it because I was visiting my grandmother who wanted to watch it, she thought of it as history being made. Me and her were both widowed young and were very sad for the Queen, sitting alone with nobody to hold her hand. After all those years together, she must feel bereft - I did after just 20 years, so over 70 is unfathomable Sad

Honestly, I don't remember what anyone wore to my DH's funeral - as long as they didn't turn up in bikinis and showgirl feathers, I didn't give a shit. I thought the women looked beautiful today and I doubt the Queen noticed what anyone was wearing or not wearing.

I also felt very uncomfortable watching the funeral, in a way that I haven't for other public figures - I watched Thatcher's and Diana's, but this was so different. It felt intrusive because just the family were there, it seemed voyeuristic. My gran said the same thing afterwards, even though she had been the one who wanted it on.

SarahAndQuack · 17/04/2021 21:36

@DareIask

I thought it a shame Beatrice and Eugenie didn't follow the queens example and wear black tights. It's what she believes is appropriate and I would have respected that and worn them, irrespective of my own tastes
What a ridiculous comment. I can't imagine she cares. Did you not notice this was quite an unusual royal funeral? Like, with the landie and all?

For an event with a huge amount of inbuilt pomp and circumstance, it was very lacking in stuffy protocol.

(And don't you think the queen was wearing tights because she is in her 90s and it was a cold day in April ... aside from anything else?)

I am no royalist but it's so nasty to pick over it like this.

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2021 21:39

I thought they looked just fine. I love a pair of high heels, I am sure they could have worn whatever footwear they wanted.

thebabessavedme · 17/04/2021 21:40

I think I only noticed the heels because it seems so bloody long ago that I saw anyone dressed up - they are all fairly elegant women with minds of their own, I would guess they chose their own outfits and shoes?, I would also assume the queen had more on her mind today than to care who had tights on!

JudgeRindersMinder · 17/04/2021 21:41

@felulageller

How on earth do you get to that conclusion? I exclusively breast fed my son for a year by expressing every feed because he couldn’t latch
DareIask · 17/04/2021 21:41

@SarahAndQuack you do realise you're on a thread lightheartedly discussing what's they were wearing?

Doghead · 17/04/2021 21:42

I don't 'have to torture' myself. I like wearing heels

Harriscap · 17/04/2021 21:42

Females?!

Are you the dad in Friday Night Dinner?

SarahAndQuack · 17/04/2021 21:43
@SarahAndQuack you do realise you're on a thread lightheartedly discussing what's they were wearing?
No, to me it looks like a thread full of nasty comments about what they're wearing. Very unpleasant.
