I am not a royalist, but I thought today was really special. One thing that struck me though was the high heels. They could barely walk in them, especially on the cobbles. Isn't it a shame that women have to torture themselves like this.

OP posts:
Bagelsandbrie · 17/04/2021 20:57

I think they looked beautiful. If you don’t have to walk far in them high heels do look very pretty. I’d probably wear them too.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/04/2021 21:00

Diana wore flats because she was taller than Charles if I remember correctly.

JADS · 17/04/2021 21:01

It's not far, but that is one hell of a hill and the cobbles make it more difficult. I did feel a bit sorry for them, but they did look very elegant.

WaterBottle123 · 17/04/2021 21:01

@beginningoftheend

It wasn't a state funeral. And doing something just because we've done it 'forever' doesn't make it ok. In 1920 Women hasn't had the vote 'forever' etc etc etc,

I was widowed in 2014 and comprehend the sheer invasion of a TV crew. It's repugnant and everyone who watched should be ashamed.

And I say that as an anti-royalist

ShirleyPhallus · 17/04/2021 21:03

@NewLynHill

They all looked like they were hobbling, other than Kate who probably has an advanced certificate in Walking In Very High Heels
Doesn’t she?! It’s so impressive. Bending down to talk to a small child in a tight skirt being another of her talents
Beecham · 17/04/2021 21:04

Each to their own, but why do they have to be sooo high? The sort of height where you just look uncomfortable. Hopefully it will go out of fashion and their children will look back and think how ridiculous it was that their mothers did this to themselves.

(I have nothing against a low heel, just ludicrous 6inch stilettos)

I respectfully disagree, the royal family is the royal family, they are not private citizens.

I appreciate it wasn't a state funeral, apologies for that, but it was a royal funeral.

DareIask · 17/04/2021 21:08

I agree

The tv coverage was quite respectful of the family I thought... no unnecessary close ups etc but they are public figures. While it must be hard to have such occasions televised it's the price they pay for their status.

Blessex · 17/04/2021 21:08

@Beecham but they surely would have chosen to wear them this high. Nobody would have forced them.

I do see what you mean OP, I actually think high heels look ridiculous (I occasionally still wear them though lol) but younger people (under say, 25) don't tend to wear them I think they're outdated anyway. I'd say chunky high heels are not only comfortable but more trendy too so not sure why the royals love them so much.

With all that said though I also believe that they can wear what they like - maybe they really love wearing them and don't do it to please others? In which case it's Their body their choice at the end of the day so who are we to judge

NerrSnerr · 17/04/2021 21:12

@DareIask

I thought it a shame Beatrice and Eugenie didn't follow the queens example and wear black tights. It's what she believes is appropriate and I would have respected that and worn them, irrespective of my own tastes
How on earth do you know what tights the Queen thinks her granddaughters should wear? Unless you're her lady in waiting?
NerrSnerr · 17/04/2021 21:13

@DareIask how do you know they didn't ask her?

peak2021 · 17/04/2021 21:14

No woman should ever be required to wear heels, except perhaps for a stage production if their character wears them.

sarsonswine · 17/04/2021 21:15

@Blessex

As a feminist I hate to say this but thought they looked fab. Confused Beatrice looked great today actually. The only thing that I struggle with was whether Beatrice or Eugenie were wearing tights. Looked like they had bare legs. Would have worn black sheets like Sophie and Kate.
I find it odd that a feminist would judge women at a funeral for what they are wearing to be honest. Even if they did have bare legs it's not an offence. Funerals are about so much else than clothes.
DareIask · 17/04/2021 21:15

It's just standard etiquette.

They all wore them apart from B & E. Have you never noticed this is usual?

Theunamedcat · 17/04/2021 21:16

@EdithWeston

Agree

The fashion has completely changed since Diana Princess of Wales wore flats or low heels, and I do not think it's a change for the better

She had too because he didn't like her being taller than him he asked for a step to stand on for photos so he looked taller they were actually the same height
Toilenstripes · 17/04/2021 21:16

They all looked wonderful and appropriate.

sarsonswine · 17/04/2021 21:17

how do you know they didn't ask her?

Grandma, I know you are grieving your husband of many decades but can I just ask you what colour tights I should wear to his funeral?

Oh fuck off Beatrice, I've got other things to worry about.

It'd take an insensitive person to ask her that!

NerrSnerr · 17/04/2021 21:18

What if they had asked though and the Queen said where whatever tights you want or not. That would be ok wouldn't it?

I have been a principal mourner at a funeral and a couple of people asked if they could wear certain things (like not ties or a certain colour) I couldn't have given a fuck and have no memory of what anyone was wearing that day.

onemouseplace · 17/04/2021 21:18

I noticed all the very high heels straight away! Mainly because I thought they looked great, but my first thought was how I've not worn heels that high in years, let alone heels at all over the past year.

felulageller · 17/04/2021 21:18

I feel sorry for Eugenie and Zara that they had to go so soon after giving birth. Neither exclusively breastfeeding it seems.

NerrSnerr · 17/04/2021 21:19

Can't bloody win can they, wrong shoes, wrong tights, not feeding their baby's correctly.

Were all the men in suitable attire or is it just the women getting it so terribly wrong?

LongDistanceClaret · 17/04/2021 21:21

It would be nice if a younger royal broke the mould and chose to wear flat shoes. At the moment it feels like it’s what is expected.

Theunamedcat · 17/04/2021 21:22

The funeral wasn't that long to make that kind of assumptions
