We have a current front runner on toys- an old fashioned Powerball! Excuse the blurry actio shot

Powerballs: are they the small but extremely powerful bouncy balls from the '60s?
If so I will share this from the '60s:
Bragging about how high we could get powerballs to bounce, a friend said she bounced it so high that when it came back down, a bit of cloud was attached.
Childhood...where nonsense like that sounded plausible.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 21/05/2026 22:49

Someone in the post office today asked me if I knew who owned the podgy tabby cat......... she lives across the road from me.

She then added that he was remarkably friendly, and that he visited her garden frequently.

I think she missed the memo about Mr. G's arrival.

She's got two house cats, apparently.
Trust Gizmo to sniff out a possible extra food supply.
🤣

Has anyone tried the woolly tumble drier balls? Miss B doesn’t play much these days but was very happy rolling over in the sun today, but I’ve seen lots of cats obsessed with those balls

Pixiedust1234 · 22/05/2026 09:57

Defiantly41 Yes we had those. One is now lost and the other is not allowed to be touched. She doesn't play with it as such but every so often (at least 3 times a week) there will be a godawful yowling at 3 am for several minutes until it is delivered to a bedroom as a "gift".

Don't ask me how something only slightly smaller, and only slightly less hard, than a tennis ball can be carried from a living room, through a long hallway, climb the many stairs and go halfway into a bedroom by a cat with a small mouth. I sometimes wonder if she can dislocate her jaw like a snake which is very disconcerting tbh.

HumanToCatBeasties · 22/05/2026 16:54

Boris and Matilda seem to have a timeshare in the same box. You'd think there were no other cat (or human) beds they could sleep on.

I met a very friendly NMC this morning, who tried to get into my bag. She / he definitely knew I’d had catnip toys in it.

I think this is the one I’ve seen climbing trees locally, which is the only way another cat could meet Kitty.

Does he like some more than others?

The weather is officially hot, as Matilda has left her box and assumed her favorite hot weather pose. No she doesn't care how undignified she looks.

Spotted a new NMC saunter out from the side of our house today, walked across the drive as if he owned it and then walked down the road. Looks very upmarket 🤣

I don't know why my picture of Matilda went all pixellated, it looked fine on my phone. Maybe a certain amount of pixellation is for the best to preserve her modesty.

Yes, very elegant fur!

RumNotRun · Yesterday 11:15

That is a very posh looking cat @GrumpyoldpersonwithcatsMaybe he (?) will be more acceptable to Sybil 😁

Kitty sniffed the bag rather suspiciously when I got in just now. She knew someone else had been at it.

Wow gorgeous. Almost worth the attentions of the beauteous Sybil!

I think Frank is hot. Every time I go upstairs he is sprawled on my bed, instead of his usual very nest loaf position.

Kitty’s happily dozing under a table on the balcony, which is east facing so I don’t need to worry about her getting too much sun.

I have the first Saturday in God knows how long when I have no commitments until the evening. I love my busy social life but I needed this. I got my hair cut & went shopping first thing & I’ve spent the past few hours lying on the sofa.

I bought a cooling mat a few years ago but none of my cats were interested.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · Yesterday 13:18

Before we all get too excited pairing Sybil off, I've referred to the NMC as a 'he' simply because I unconsciously assume that all cats are male. 'He' may well be a she for all I know.

Mind you apparently anything goes nowadays 🤣

I can highly recommend you putting it at the bottom of your bed and resting your feet on it at night in this hot weather. I sleep like a baby instead of tossing and turning and have done for several summers.

I’ve used it as a seat a few times when WFH on especially hot days.

RumNotRun · Yesterday 19:32

That reminds me that I have two cooling mats somewhere. I put them away at the end of last summer and of course have no idea where they are now!

Cooling mats?
Are you all mad?
I'm still sleeping with my electric blanket on, all night long.

I did wonder, Broon, when I saw what appears to be a lit fire in the background of that picture of Linney, allegedly taken last night....
Is it cold up North?

Aye, it is.
It gets mildly warmish some afternoons. A friend took me for a drive and we were elated because it got as high as 12° for a change.

By bedtime it can get down to 4° outside, although the house is about 18°.

I am definitely still using my heated throw in the evenings.
