Hope it goes well at the vet, Allergic.

@Allergictoironing good luck today

He was an absolute superstar. OK he was hiding under the linen rack when we went in the room to crate him, but as Annie started to aim him at the opening in the top of the crate he slithered in on his own. He actually snuggled up to the vet for a cuddle at one stage when he was distressed - I got very jealous!

Some good news, some bad. He's only lost another 100g in the last 3 months or so. But his poo is now near enough completely liquid & he's going at least 10-12 times a day tiny amounts.

With discussion with the vet, we've agreed he's now at the stage with his bowel that we need to deal with that even if the treatment is risky with his FIV. The balance is that steroids MAY make his FIV worsen quicker, but if they can help reduce the bowel inflammation so he can absorb nutrients and have fewer, more solid poos then it's worth that risk.

He's a nightmare to medicate, he'd rather go hungry than eat anything with meds in and anyone who suggests pilling him every day is having a laugh. And no, things like pill pockets & pill putty don't work with him, neither does even a whole lik e lix with a very few grains of powdered pill work, or mixed in with food, or on his favourite chicken - we've tried the lot in the past. So he will have to go back every 6-8 weeks or so for steroid injections, assuming he reacts well to the dose he had today.

We are looking at maybe shortening his life a little doe to the FIV, but making it much better for him. Poor lad, can't be nice having the runs 24/7 especially as he gets wind with it and it's so very smelly. Silver lining for me will hopefully be slightly less time spent having to fully change a stinking litter tray every 2-3 days!

@Allergictoironing Sorry to hear that but hopefully he will be more comfortable with his bowels sorted

Oh I hope the steroids help Tobias, Allergic. Poor little chap.

I really hope the steroids help Tobias too @Allergictoironing

Allergictoironing · 13/08/2026 07:10

Well so far not really any change in the consistency, but (could be my imagination) the stench is a little more like a "normal" very stinky cat poo!

Next step is to see if he accepts probiotics in his food, waiting until the weekend for that so I can replace the "poisoned" meal if he won't eat it.

CatsonPollock · 13/08/2026 08:50

Poor Tobias. Hopefully the steroids will sort it and will get 'things' back to a (relatively) stress free litter tray!

Pixiedust1234 · 13/08/2026 13:47

Wishing Tobias a less liquidy poo, and soon. I really wish the hairball diet had worked for him too as The Stray now has solid poops, but even better can also tolerate different food brands as well. Sending him hugs (via welding gloves) ❤

Well, I was in the greengrocer's and encountered Tia, a cat on a lead.

Also in the greengrocer's - the owner and I were chatting about cats, and she mentioned visiting my neighbour.

Apparently she encountered a tabby cat there (guess who) and the cat enjoyed being stroked, but swiped her legs with his paw when she got up to leave.

I sighed and showed her a picture of Gizmo, and she said "Aye, that's him."

Arriving home from the afternoon tea club, I found Linney enjoying the sun.

Oh she was. She was very vocal, too.
She's ten.
