Herbie went on pigeon patrol yesterday but luckily, did not manage to catch any!

Are you saying there’s a Wind in the Willows without The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, @Pudmyboy?

After some research on Wikipedia, I think it's the stage and film adaptations that exclude the Piper and focus instead on Toad and his adventures. So the book is safe, phew! Sorry for any distress caused!

Phew!

That would be like all the stage, film etc adaptations of Winnie the Pooh being so different from the original.

Yes, luckily for the pigeons.

Gizmo looks longingly at the blue tits in our garden, but he cannot catch them.

Well, we were taken to the stage version every year when we were children. It was our Christmas treat.

Linney is a bugger for catching birds and mice. Also voles.

He brings them (generally in a dismembered condition) to the front step as a doubtful treat for us.

I imagined Gizmo might be a good hunter rather than Linney!
Appearances are deceptive I suppose.

Breadcat24 · 24/08/2025 12:41

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne bright white you would think they would see him coming, or is the wheelchair shed oil camo?

Oh I am envious! Sadly I never got taken to the theatre as a child. Kid's Saturday cinema was a reasonably regular treat though!

Breadcat24 · 24/08/2025 16:10

@Pudmyboy I remember saturday cinema. Seem to recall woody woodpecker cartoons and Casey Jones.
Does anyone remember the trailers in cinemas? I remember going to see grease and there being a thing about skateboarding.
We need more cats in films!

My Dad used to read me Bible Stories by David Kossoff. I have no idea why, as we weren't religious and nor was his family. I loved them though as they were written in such a fun way. Dad and I had a very difficult relationship for years, but that has always been a favourite and comforting memory.

I had the David Kossof Bible stories as a child too - we weren’t a religious family but my parents thought I ought to know the Bible stories. They just cover the stories from the Old Testament.

I read them to DD1 when she was probably about 7. She also loved the engaging and fun style. When I finished the book DD said to me “those were so good - is there a sequel?”

At this point I realised that we hadn’t done a very good job on her basic religious education.

"Aye hen. That'll be the New Testament, which Jewish people don't believe in"

Gizmo can't jump.
Linney is very capable in that respect.

Aha! I never thought of that.
Maybe it is.

The vet trimmed loads of oily fur off his coat last week.

Ah @Breadcat24 you are much younger than me! My Saturday matinée cinema trips were in the '60s, I seem to remember Cliff Richard films and also Carry on Screaming (still my favourite Carry On) though that may not have been at the matinée.
To bring the conversation back to cats, a cat was mentioned in Carry on Screaming (though not shown).

Breadcat24 · 24/08/2025 19:17

@Pudmyboy I hope the cat did not get the "frying tonight" treatment. Odbod was my fav

Ah no! It was when Inspector Bung shot the snake, the shot was heard in the basement, Fenella Fielding said 'They must have shot the snake' , to which Kenneth Williams said 'As long as it wasn't the cat.'
(Yes I did look up the lines to make sure I got it right!).

EmpressaurusKitty · 24/08/2025 20:37

I think the first film I saw at the cinema was Smurfs & the Magic Flute in the late 70s. No cats in it though as far as I remember.

Someone was telling me she’d ridden a camel on her holiday & I said ‘Oh, my cat likes camels.’

She was very confused, & her bus came at that point so there wasn’t time to explain. I suppose she might have been even more confused if I’d added that Kitty’s other mate was a dragon.

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/08/2025 18:27

How was everyone’s bank holiday weekend? I went to a family party yesterday & caught up with relatives I haven’t seen for ages, which was lovely.

Pianoaholic · 25/08/2025 18:51

That sounds very nice.
DH and DS have started work on a shed in the back garden. Part of a plan to start clearing out the junk filled garage in order to have it converted. They haven't got too far yet as they decided to go off and play tennis at one point.
A friend came over today and we played piano duets which I haven't done for ages.
Herbie has had a very lazy day!

I expect Herbie enjoyed the duets. Has he been out inspecting the work on the shed?

Pianoaholic · 25/08/2025 19:18

Yes, I think he's been sizing up the freshly dug and sieved soil for a new toilet!!
I suggested that they get on and finish the job before Herbie tries it out!
My friend who I played the duets with fosters cats! She has an elderly male tabby at the moment.

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/08/2025 19:23
