Cat has eaten bolognese sauce

I’ve made bolognese for tonight’s dinner, which I have had simmering away, stirring occasionally. I caught the cat up on the side having a good lick of the spoon. He can’t have had much, literally a few licks. It has an onion, a couple of garlic cloves, celery, carrots, a couple of peppers, passata, some leftover cherry tomatoes, and obviously mince.

I know garlic and onion are toxic - should I be worried?

He was swiftly removed and is now having a snooze in his bed by the radiator. (Normal afternoon routine.)

My orange cat bit into a glow stick when I wasn't looking. I had to take him into a dark wardrobe and open his mouth to see if I could work out how much of the toxic substance he'd actually consumed - thankfully it was mainly on the fur around his mouth which I cleaned off with a wipe.

Orange cats have their own rules...

Genius way of checking! This made me giggle

My great aunt had a huge persian cat called Tosh. He once lifted a full frozen salmon that she'd got out to defrost, out of a little top window in the conservatory kitchen and proudly ate the whole lot, frozen in the middle of the drive! We had egg salad that night!
My little Suki is a cat/dog! She brings all sorts home! She fetches sticks in for me to throw for her! We can play for up to an hour!
She's brought home a frozen chip, an ancient bone, a wrapped, unused tampon (definitely not mine!) a big chunk of tree bark, a pen top and a small old decorative circle of wood!
Honestly, she's always on the hunt for something new and interesting! 🤣
Sabre meanwhile is a lazy chunk, he just chances his arm in the kitchen, constantly!

Sabre right, Suki left!

When did ginger cats become orange? Another example of the Americanisation of our language. (Not point of thread, I know).

Here's my plastic obsessed boy watching the snow if the photo works

Oh love him!! He is so much like my boy 💜
Although all 3 of my cats are absolutely terrified of snow and sleet! 😂

sweetsardineface · 20/02/2025 09:38

I ❤️ all your cats. Mine is not bothered by food at all, not even Dreamies or smoked salmon. She’ll only eat kibble 😵‍💫

I know - but how can you say this cat is anything but orange? He’s glowing!

Hands down, my favourite thread of the year so far. Very glad to have found the litter tray forum finally!

One of our cats love a Dorito

I knew he’d be orange! What is it with orange cats?! Mine probably has bolognaise weekly. He hovers under the chair of my youngest and has been known to even jump in the sink during clean up to lick the plates. He’s absolutely fine other than unsurprisingly, slightly overweight.

My late orange cat was permanently turning to scrounge human food!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/02/2025 19:01

Just updating to say that all is well, and no consequences of the Italian (food) job have been experienced. Thanks for keeping me company and for all the bad cat stories!

My orange cat used to eat coco pops if they were left unattended.

He also once tag-teamed with my tabby to kidnap a live hen and bring it home through the cat flap. Feathery kerfuffle ensued!

Ours did this. The worst that has happened is one got a bit of diarrhoea. Always delightful to have to deal with 😅

Caspianberg · 23/02/2025 04:42

We used to have two cats. Tortishell boight home a live dormouse and released in room downstairs. Orange cat was terrified of it and ran away to hide. Dh managed to catch it from behind radiator after about an hour and had to wander off the the woods with it in some Tupperware to release away from them.
Orange cat has always been a softi with wildlife, never hunts

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2025 09:05

The late Cheddar wanted to sample any human food.

@maudelovesharold
I lived in a house share once where one of the other people had a cat with thumbs. It was basically a prototype of the new super race of cats who will no doubt soon be running the planet.
Thumb cat used to amuse herself by picking up ornaments and throwing them at the floors or walls. For fun. She was super smart and could you know do whatever she liked, so a cat but with thumbs.

😁 That’s amazing! Someone we had in to do some work for us once, told us that he had a cat with thumbs, who was able to open cupboards particularly easily. It’s a good job there’s no way for these cats with thumbs to form alliances!

MoonWoman69 · 23/02/2025 12:26

Polydactyl cats are so smart! I think they sit there and suddenly think, ooh, look! I have thumbs, let's put them to good use! And then do! 🤣

Tonight we had a Higgedy quiche with jacket potatoes and salad for dinner. A little bit of quiche was left over which DP was going to have for lunch tomorrow. It was on the side to cool, and you know the rest. Bacon, eggs, what’s not to like for a cat? He wasn’t keen on the pastry and it was swiftly removed before he could have much, but he’s some boy.

Worn out by his adventures now.

He'll be fine, we used to have an (also orange) cat that ate absolutely anything that wasn't in a sealed container. Leftover Chinese takeaways, packets of crisps...leaving a crisp packet out was absolutely verboten because he would get his head stuck in them. He also used to steal cherry tomatoes and enjoy piercing the skin with his prickles before devouring them in a very offputting way. Nothing ever seemed to do him any harm, constitution of an ox 🐂
