Cat has eaten bolognese sauce

I’ve made bolognese for tonight’s dinner, which I have had simmering away, stirring occasionally. I caught the cat up on the side having a good lick of the spoon. He can’t have had much, literally a few licks. It has an onion, a couple of garlic cloves, celery, carrots, a couple of peppers, passata, some leftover cherry tomatoes, and obviously mince.

I know garlic and onion are toxic - should I be worried?

He was swiftly removed and is now having a snooze in his bed by the radiator. (Normal afternoon routine.)

I had a soft boiled egg yesterday and my cat licked the leftover bits off the plate with absolute lustful joy, so much so that I immediately went and made him his own boiled egg to enjoy from his bowl. Not interested one little bit. Nutters, the lot of them.

@SabrinaThwaite he's a hefty beast

‘Carrying a little condition’ as my DH likes to claim.

I think he'll be just fine. Keep a close eye on him - honestly the paranoia with social media these days is too much.
How many cats and dogs over the years have nicked a whole cake or a cooked chicken with bones. Mine have both managed to find - of all things on 19rh Feb, a couple of slices of Christmas cake thrown away in a beach car park, yes they'll have had a couple of raisens each. Both fine 5 hours later. 2 days ago, 10 month old teenage rip stole a half a box of cocktail cherries - she's still bouncing around for England. I was tearing her being uncrated while I showered, back to being incarcerated I'm afraid!

TroysMammy · 19/02/2025 22:02

My cat, not orange but a chubster, has eaten or tried to eat but been thwarted - buttered malt loaf, butter chicken, custard and last night a honey and mustard chicken drumstick. A previous cat, also not orange, bolognese from the saucepan and sponge pudding. They would turn up their noses if it was presented to them but ill gotten gains are fair game.

CatAteMyHam · 19/02/2025 22:15

Just afew licks he will be fine. My previous much loved black cat would eat anything. I caught her with her face in the tuna pasta on the stove, the was licking so quickly when she was rumbled! She also brought home a cooked beef joint? Goodness knows where from, i couldnt get near to take it off her. So i denied all knowledge as she ran off with it!

Such a lovely thread, really enjoying hearing about all the naughty kitties' misdemenours ( can't spell it)!

I am very reassured by the other naughty kitties! Our previous girl would dash from wherever she was if she heard food being prepared/packets opening, but was very polite and wouldn’t actually steal anything.

Get your bum off the table kitty.
As my vet pointed out after dog necked half a fruit cake, most animals must have a reasonable tolerance to these toxic foods or there wouldn't be any pets left.

Yes. I sent a photo of him sitting gleefully on my work laptop to a colleague the other day, and he replied along the lines of “look at that orange monster sitting on the typewriter. No regard for limited resources”. Accurate. Zero fucks.

DP is going to wfh tomorrow in case of any incidents - I am in work. He’s had some “drugs” (catnip) and a bit of a rampage but is back in his beddy now. I’ll be carting him and his bed through to the kitchen prison shortly, or he will be dancing on my head looking for breakfast at 5am.

Our white boy self-identifies as an orange. He has the WEIRDEST taste in food. Things he goes bananas for, in no particular order:
avocado
green beans
chickpeas (and hummus)
cannellini beans
sweetcorn
lettuce
anything sweet (he’ll dive in a vat of syrup and I found him trying to eat my vegan fizzy cola bottles yesterday)
all bread products

He once went round to a neighbour's and stole their steak from the kitchen side. I’ve never been so embarrassed. He also, very proudly, brought back a slice of mouldy brioche once (we don’t know where that came from - his step-sister is the hunter so presumably he’s the gatherer of the pair).

On a less fun note, he did work out how to open the microwave a few years back, dragged out the pack of pain aux raisins we had in there and proceeded to scoff more than half. Ended up on a drip for three days as his liver shut down - really touch and go. He still tries to eat raisins now because he’s an idiot.

He’s definitely chucked himself into a vat of bolognese before and been fine though, and I’m as heavy handed with my garlic in cooking as I am with my vanilla essence in baking 😂

My Cat is not orange but he eats everything. Everything. Every day. He cleans up all the plates, dishes and pans. If the dishwasher is left open he gets inside and licks anything in there. He loves Bolognese, soup, curry, yoghurt, broccoli, peas, green beans, cucumber, melon.....

Little Tennyson is like that and hasn't grasped the distinction between my food and his food. The only foods he's disgusted by are cauliflower and banana. He's particularly partial to Eton Mess, cottage cheese and coleslaw.

He’s eaten his dinner, done a wee in the litter tray, been out for a wander, had his nightly brush, and he’s now back in his beddy, looking like butter wouldn’t melt. (Live scenes.) He’d eat the butter before it melted.

He did have to be removed from the dinner table when we ate the bolognese though.

Ha I knew it! Back for seconds!

He’s so gorgeous, what a smasher.

They will more than likely be fine. If it disagrees with them they will probably throw up fairly soon but other than that I wouldn't worry. My cats eats anything and everything they can get their paws on. Their favourite is a nice hot curry. The only time they have been sick from it is when one of them ate the leaves off the onions that were drying in the greenhouse. They are banned from the greenhouse now much to their disgust.

If my dog had done this I would be worried, on the phone to the vet. As it is I also have an orange cat who is in love with pretty much everything he shouldn’t eat: a fondness for curries and in fact all spicy food. Waffles, cakes, naan bread: crackers (ritz) and all the usual stuff like meat and cheese. I don’t know how he’s not dead. He also eats from neighbours bins.

We’re very careful but he can get in the bin and if something is covered with a cast iron pan weighing more than the cat he easily upends it.

coldscottishmum · 20/02/2025 00:46

My cat stole a purple starburst from an unknown location (he has full access to outside and inside). Only reason I knew is he threw up the wrapper on the kitchen floor with some purple saliva mixed in. I remember urgently phoning the vet, sobbing. I thought he would die. The vet laughed on the phone and said he’s just a greedy boy. No need to be seen.
The vet was absolutely correct.

im sure your cat fairly enjoyed the sauce though!

Bolognese was one my old cats' favourite things. She lived toa ripe old age, in the days before we knew garlic/onion were bad for them. Great wSher upper she was. And the other one, and the twobefore them.....in fact all the cats I've known since my dadbrought the firstone home when I was 3 (1961).

Mine will still wash the bolognese dishes.

fridaynight1 · 20/02/2025 01:32

My cat will eat anything she’s within a cat’s whisker of. Chicken madras was her most recent . Spag Bol would be on her preferred list but the madras was a good enough substitute. TBH I don’t think she cares what she eats and doesn’t appear to have any tastebuds whatsoever.

I have to add that I don’t go out of my way to feed her these these foods - she only needs me to turn my back for a few seconds ..

Caspianberg · 20/02/2025 06:02

My childhood cat once stole a bag of kippers our elderly lady had on the kitchen side defrosting. Climbed 5 6ft high fences in between us with it in his mouth. He didn’t get to eat them as we had no idea where they came from.
Until I took elderly lady her Saturday newspaper a few days later and she complained to me that she kept loosing things and thought it was to do with her memory!
