Cat has eaten bolognese sauce

I’ve made bolognese for tonight’s dinner, which I have had simmering away, stirring occasionally. I caught the cat up on the side having a good lick of the spoon. He can’t have had much, literally a few licks. It has an onion, a couple of garlic cloves, celery, carrots, a couple of peppers, passata, some leftover cherry tomatoes, and obviously mince.

I know garlic and onion are toxic - should I be worried?

He was swiftly removed and is now having a snooze in his bed by the radiator. (Normal afternoon routine.)

We have a Bengal and there's nothing he doesn't eat, you can't leave a plate unattended even for a minute, nothing has harmed him yet, he has a taste for anything spicy in particular, watermelon, broccoli and if course meat, fish, cheese, milk

Mine loves rice cakes, McDonald's hash browns and seaweed from the Chinese

Right now, 2 of my cats are having a little bit of chicken tikka, as they have done twice a month, for 16 and 18 years!

Luckingfovely · 19/02/2025 18:38

My feline overlord will eat any human food she can get her murder mittens into and has never shown any sign of being affected.

This is of course on top of an expensive cat food diet, multiple Dreamie-shaped offerings during the day, and the nightly average of 2-3 sacrificial rodents.

With the livers left where your feet go, naturally.

Luckingfovely · 19/02/2025 18:40

@RIPVPROG my tiny ruler would kill a small human for a bite of Pepperami.

Favouritefruits · 19/02/2025 19:18

for garlic to poison a cat they need a whole clove, your cat will be fine

timeforachange999 · 19/02/2025 19:26

Our cat once ate half a lasagna down to the first layer of pasta. That had quite a bit of onion in. He was fine

We once picked out all the chillis out of a Singapore vermicelli from the Chinese. Went in the kitchen to find that cat had eaten them all 🤷‍♀️

I'm more concerned for your mental health after getting an orange cat than said cat after licking a tiny amount of Bolognese

He’s an absolute joy, such a funny, cuddly boy. He has brought us so much pleasure after such a sad time losing our girl - but he’s certainly “a character”. 😬

My cat jumped up on the worktop a few years ago and ate some gravy from the pot of liver and onions that my DD had put there to cool. I panicked a bit as I knew that onions are toxic to cats. She was sick shortly afterwards, but was fine! Obviously got it all out of her system.

Gumbo · 19/02/2025 19:37

My orange cat bit into a glow stick when I wasn't looking. I had to take him into a dark wardrobe and open his mouth to see if I could work out how much of the toxic substance he'd actually consumed - thankfully it was mainly on the fur around his mouth which I cleaned off with a wipe.

Orange cats have their own rules...

Pigeonqueen · 19/02/2025 19:38

I am enjoying the photos ❤️

Our cat is a food menace too. When dh opens a bag of crisps he will literally hear it from 2 gardens away and will run in as if his life depends on it 🙄 you’d honestly think he’d never eaten in his life.

ThatUniqueKoala · 19/02/2025 19:38

Oh gosh he's adorable!

MoonWoman69 · 19/02/2025 19:40

My old ginger boy Bob loved curry and chilli, the hotter the better! He also loved the middle of spring rolls, cheese, ice cream, milk, cream, butter... Everything they're not supposed to have! My two black brother and sister kittens, basically eat anything unattended! I've had to come up with some inventive ways to hide things! Sabre the boy, has just dragged a bag of cat treats in and dumped it at my feet! And of course, his sister Suki suddenly appeared, to take part in the cheek of it!!! 🤣

MoonWoman69 · 19/02/2025 19:42

@Pigeonqueen Oh yes, the crisps!!! Sabre will happily eat a full packet given half a chance! He loves Walkers cheese and onion! Gone are the days of having things to myself!!! 🤣

shellyleppard · 19/02/2025 19:42

@Judystilldreamsofhorses he's absolutely gorgeous.....we had a ginger nutter once. Best cat ever but a total nutter!! Still miss him now

My Cat is not orange but he eats everything. Everything. Every day. He cleans up all the plates, dishes and pans. If the dishwasher is left open he gets inside and licks anything in there. He loves Bolognese, soup, curry, yoghurt, broccoli, peas, green beans, cucumber, melon.....

Randomease · 19/02/2025 19:45

I was sat on the bed with my cat upstairs when my daughter opened the packet of cheese for lunch and I got to witness the speed at which my elderly and fast asleep cat woke up and got down the stairs. It was impressive

SabrinaThwaite · 19/02/2025 19:47

I think your ginger menace is missing a partner in crime. A cute little tortoiseshell would make your lives absolutely manic complete Wink

Caspianberg · 19/02/2025 19:47

Our Orange cat swiped a warm lemon and almond cookie early. Freshly baked. Ds took one, on plate, then made the fateful error of putting it down to pop to the loo.
He loves lemon.
If we ever make lemon drizzle he can smell it under the glass cake dome

Hes Such a character. Joins us on walks through the woods and if Ds is out on his bike he follows. When Ds was baby, cat would sit in pram basket to accompany us. Our neighbours call our cat ‘the dog’

Hes really fussy for cat food though.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/02/2025 20:03

He’s eaten his dinner, done a wee in the litter tray, been out for a wander, had his nightly brush, and he’s now back in his beddy, looking like butter wouldn’t melt. (Live scenes.) He’d eat the butter before it melted.

He did have to be removed from the dinner table when we ate the bolognese though.

He'll be grand, don't worry. From a fellow orange cat mum.

Oh and Sabre likes cake, lemon drizzle, chocolate, plain sponge, cake is cake to him! I opened a peanut brittle bar a couple of months ago, broke some off, went to put the kettle on, came back in and he was wading into the peanuts that had fallen loose! Another thing I couldn't have to myself!
