What words does your cat know?

I have had cats since age 7, but with my current two I've only just picked up on the number of words they know and respond to!
Are they super intelligent (as I suspect 😊) or do your cats know some words too?

Here's the list of what they know:

  • their own name
  • the other cat's name
  • Cat (they know we're talking about them)
  • food
  • 'feed the cats' - they go crazy when they hear that
  • out/outside- they walk straight to the door when they hear that
  • Toy - my cat puts her paw on her toy when she hears that
  • Bed - just found that one out yesterday

I suppose it's similar to dogs knowing words - but cats are a lot less responsive. Still I'm really impressed by them!

Food and Vet.

The first makes them come running, the last makes them go AWOL and you can’t retrieve the situation by then saying food, they are not that stupid.

AnnaMagnani · 02/05/2024 13:05

I trained one of mine and she knows sit, high five, lie down, up and roll.

Unfortunately she was so good she started pestering every evening to do them for the treats.

The other cat just looked at us and said he couldn't be bothered.

Breadcat24 · 02/05/2024 13:19

breakfast

RichardsGear · 02/05/2024 13:21

'Get down!' Boy cat jumps off the worktop when I say that. Girl cat is too lazy to get up there in the first place.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 02/05/2024 13:22

Love these! Especially them not being tricked by saying food to try to retrieve the vet word😂😂😂😂

Portman · 02/05/2024 13:25

I have a feeling that the cat understands every.single.word, but based on the look of disdain on his face chooses to ignore virtually eveything...

Boska23 · 02/05/2024 13:35

Their names, food, snack, bed, come, toy, dog, goochie-boo (I know, ridiculous- but they all know that if I’m in the goochie-boo mode - cuddles are about to happen).

therealcookiemonster · 02/05/2024 13:36

I can't find the link, but there was an article that demonstrated that cats knew an average of 140 words but unlike dogs did not respond consistently because they don't like pandering to humans.

I've seen people use those speech buttons with cats with variable success

pelotonaddiction · 02/05/2024 13:37

Not many
He thinks his name is shadyno and shadystopit

Oh yes! Cuddle was the one I forgot to put on my list! They know that too

brooksghost · 02/05/2024 14:11

Girl Cat
Her name
Ignores most other words unless she wants something...but only on her terms.

Blackcats7 · 02/05/2024 14:12

I forgot Meep meep. This is me saying mind out please I need to come by because I use a crutch so am not very nimble.

Randommother · 02/05/2024 14:13

Dreamies!! Tail goes straight up at that one 😆

Hugosmaid · 02/05/2024 14:14

There names
Get down
and ‘hello’ my boy cat actually meows ‘elloooo’ back 😂😂😂

Movinghouseatlast · 02/05/2024 14:15

Where's your brush?
Treaties
Milk
Let's go
Come with me

SpringLobelia · 02/05/2024 14:21

I am convinced ours understand pretty much everything. Although they really only respond to 'Dreamies'.

One of ours though has managed to make us understand her completely and when she wants us to play with her versus when she wants us to come and feed her. She also makes it clear when she's not impressed with the food we put down and she would like something else on the menu.

Crispynoodle · 02/05/2024 14:22

'Rolley over' that's it! She does perform this spectacularly well

Crispynoodle · 02/05/2024 14:24

Yes! Our old boy cat can also say 'ellllllooooo'

Sallysoup · 02/05/2024 14:27

I am sure one of mine actually answers me, he's very chatty and if I ask a question he will chirp back, including follow up questions 😅. I just wish I could speak cat!

justsaying2023 · 02/05/2024 14:29

Mine demonstrates recognition but will almost always "take a message" and get back to me later!
Her name and several versions
Chicken (treat)
Pouch (as in food)
Mouse (whatever cat toy is in favour to play fetch with, currently a pipecleaner)
"I can't find it" leads to a frantic search for the "mouse (see above) that she has already fetched to me in another room from where we were playing or has buried in duvet.
Dreamies of course
Big stretch reacts by throwing front paws in the air
Flop cat (sung to the theme of top cat) which literally means fall over like a fainting goat, wait for concerned human and attach yourself to their arm
Cat this means you have been caught and must immediately run up the stairs and inform alternative/spare human that you are being bullied

There are more but they are also not always "heard"
