What words does your cat know?

greenshoots123 · 02/05/2024 13:01

I have had cats since age 7, but with my current two I've only just picked up on the number of words they know and respond to!
Are they super intelligent (as I suspect 😊) or do your cats know some words too?

Here's the list of what they know:

  • their own name
  • the other cat's name
  • Cat (they know we're talking about them)
  • food
  • 'feed the cats' - they go crazy when they hear that
  • out/outside- they walk straight to the door when they hear that
  • Toy - my cat puts her paw on her toy when she hears that
  • Bed - just found that one out yesterday

I suppose it's similar to dogs knowing words - but cats are a lot less responsive. Still I'm really impressed by them!

Name, "feed you?", "puss, puss, puss" and "handsome cat".

Also possible he understands "argh" when I've tripped over him and "please stop that I don't want to die" when attempting to wind around my legs on narrow stairs

Ffs <<cats name>>

RockingAmadeus · 02/05/2024 18:01

His name, breakfast, treats, hairstyle/brush, spring, mouse, cuddle, food, get down

Sussurations · 02/05/2024 18:26

His name
’time for your cat breakfast’
’not for you’ (I’m sure he understands it, although he does ignore it sometimes)
’little kiss’ - he sort of braces himself for me to kiss him on the head
’chin’ - he puts his chin forward for a scratch

He also understands ‘wait’, ‘listen’, and some variations of ‘just a minute’ when he wants something and I need to quickly do something else first - he seems to know I will come straight back. He is a very intelligent boy!

Startingagainandagain · 02/05/2024 18:38

-Her name & various versions of it
-'stick' (as in these chicken and liver stick treats you can buy)
-Dreamies
-I think she knows the meaning of 'no', 'stop', 'bad kitty' and 'stop jumping on mummy's back/head/belly', but as a Tortie she simply takes no notice of that...

Bansheed · 02/05/2024 18:47

Name, food, hungry and bed.

Goes to bed, when we tell her to. Always impresses visitors.

Gettingbysomehow · 02/05/2024 18:48

I'm not sure as both of them completely ignore me unless they want something. When they want something they can read Shakespeare.
The old one definitely understands come on then because she wants to be sitting on my lap 24/7 and those words indicate that she can do that.

ihavebecomecomfortablynumb · 02/05/2024 18:49

Ours knows his name, sit (he sits on command and we can sometimes get him to synchronise a sit with the dog,) gimme five and high five (shoots his paw up and paws your palm,) din dins & dinner, breakfast, dreamies and treats. I think he understands when I tell him to leave the dogs tail along but he tends to ignore that one. 🤣

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 02/05/2024 18:51

No (she's a scratchy cat)
Biscuit
Come come
(Daughter's name) (her favourite hooman)
Sit. Yes, really.

FknOmniShambles · 02/05/2024 18:53

All three of mine know "dinner" "treat" "hungry" "breakfast" and "cuddle."
We also watched this YouTube video of a woman whose cat rolled over when she said "spaghetti" so we have trained our lovely white baby to do the same 😂

ohthejoys21 · 02/05/2024 18:53

I've always wondered about this! I know they know their names as when I say " where's Sami?" The other cat will walk round looking.
They also know-

Out
Treatie
No
Where's Mousie?
Where's Fishie?
All finished (accompanied by hand signal)

And when I scream loud enough they look for the spider!!

They only respond to names, or 'puss' or 'cats' if called from the kitchen. They talk back if you talk to them like babies do, taking turns with you, often a silent meow. They call up the stairs to see if I am up there, or the other cat. They wait patiently when I am cutting cheese, then do a little meow to remind me to give them a bit before I put it away. So communicative but not so much words.

Kalevala · 02/05/2024 19:14

I tend to mirror communication styles, so I speak and understand more cat than my cats do human.

Mabelface · 02/05/2024 19:15

He also says hello when he comes in to announce his presence. If he's out for a while and call him, he comes legging it meowing at me.

He high fives any visitor in the hope of Dreamies.

What words does your cat know?
Pinkbonbon · 02/05/2024 19:21

My rabbit used to know the word "Banana" (rabbits usually looooove banana).

The Minions were on TV and they said it - and he went mental running around the living room, desperately looking for the source 😆

Could literally say 'ban... an...' and he'd put two and two together.

Once my mother threw out the peel in the flip bin and he jumped in after it before the lid shut 😄

Oooh, jealous ... I tried to train my late boy cat to sit for weeks, but he just didn't get it. I used same method as for a dog. I haven't bothered trying with current girl or boy. Any tips on how to do this?

ABwithAnItch · 02/05/2024 19:27

My cat knows her name and all her nicknames. She is very vocal and if I say hello kittygirl, she meows back. She knows come here and NO. And that kitty kitty means food time.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 02/05/2024 19:28

His name
breakfast
dinner
snack
DDs name (will go and look for her)
down
dreamies
chin rub (will come over and stretch out his chin when offered one)

My boy is definitely gifted and talented 😄

CurlewKate · 02/05/2024 19:28

All of them. She just doesn't let on-just takes notes to use in the future.
