What words does your cat know?

greenshoots123 · 02/05/2024 13:01

I have had cats since age 7, but with my current two I've only just picked up on the number of words they know and respond to!
Are they super intelligent (as I suspect 😊) or do your cats know some words too?

Here's the list of what they know:

  • their own name
  • the other cat's name
  • Cat (they know we're talking about them)
  • food
  • 'feed the cats' - they go crazy when they hear that
  • out/outside- they walk straight to the door when they hear that
  • Toy - my cat puts her paw on her toy when she hears that
  • Bed - just found that one out yesterday

I suppose it's similar to dogs knowing words - but cats are a lot less responsive. Still I'm really impressed by them!

Her name
Get down now! (DS2's first sentence as well)
Biscuits
Friends. We do this little nose touch when she's been bitey (she's half feral) to make friends and she knows it means no more biting.
Hello. She answers with a specific eh-oh meow. Always as a greeting.

Dreamies ! Grin

Penguinsa · 02/05/2024 19:53

Tuna
Sausage
Salmon
Chicken
Mouse
Magnificent tail
Mummy
Papa
DDs name
DSs name
Cuddle
Pidgeon
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Do you want to play tag / ball etc
When you jump down can you not knock everything over? Results in bigger jump.

viques · 02/05/2024 19:58

OUT!”

when accompanied by a finger pointing to the back door.

Response is “ I only brought it in to show you because I know you can’t catch your own.”

He does know that when I start to tidy up the sitting room in the late evening that it is getting close to evening biscuit snack time and will go and sit by his food mat.

Nightblindness · 02/05/2024 19:59

Mine know all of the above, of course (Super Intelligent, mine are 😊) but also, they know 'not yet'. Said every day to them about 2 hours before their evening meal is served to them when they start yowling for it.

Also 'bedtime' - when they immediately either run to the kitchen for Dreamies, or attempt to hide from the daily routine of being shut in the kitchen overnight.

Sunriseorange · 02/05/2024 20:23

My old girl was lounging on the garden bench in the sun this afternoon. I said "is that warm baby?" She stretched her little paws to me and said "yip". She then got up and I asked "are you following me inside?" She said "yip".

TheFireflies · 02/05/2024 20:29

All cats know their own name. Two know the names of the other two. One also answers to Fat Boy.
they all know: food, Dreamies, dinner, biscuits, Up, Down
all know the word no, all ignore it
one knows: hairy ball, fetch
one, I am almost sure, understands fluent English

Oooh, jealous ... I tried to train my late boy cat to sit for weeks, but he just didn't get it. I used same method as for a dog. I haven't bothered trying with current girl or boy. Any tips on how to do this?

The same way you do it with a dog, hold a treat up in front of them and then move it back so as they follow it their bum naturally hits the floor and they sit, say sit as it happens, then treat. We really won the cat lottery with this one though, he’s super calm and very friendly and affectionate and just wants to be with us so I think it makes him want to please us.

I have a feeling that the cat understands every.single.word, but based on the look of disdain on his face chooses to ignore virtually eveything...

This. Sometimes I says my cats name and he side eyes me like he doesn't understand 😂

It sounds like my old boy either didn't understands or didn't want to co-operate! I might try again with my current boy, as he's definitely the most intelligent cat I have had!

He knows his name.
No
Come on then
Show me ( and he will take me where he wants to go)

Ahh I love 'show me' I'm not sure my cats would understand that

I trained one of mine and she knows sit, high five, lie down, up and roll.

Unfortunately she was so good she started pestering every evening to do them for the treats.

The other cat just looked at us and said he couldn't be bothered.

This is amazing!

Horrace · 09/05/2024 21:03

They all know their names
Probably each other names.

We have to spell out the word C-H-I-C-K-E-N because they definitely know that and will all come running if we say it normally. Makes me laugh every time

AnnaMagnani · 09/05/2024 21:04

@abracadabra1980 if your cat likes food a lot it's actually very easy to do.

My DH and DM laughed at me when I started but actually the cat had got 'sit' within a couple of days and the rest followed very fast.

So fast that she started pestering me every evening to do her sit and high-five as she knew she got treats.

One winter I said to my cat, 'shall I make a fire'. He darted past me into the lounge and sat expectantly in front of the fire. Other cat's knows 'fish' for his dancing fish toy, 'food', 'can I have a cuddle' and 'give me a kiss'.

Penguinsa · 10/05/2024 00:00

Learnt today that Floof also understands your chicken kiev is in the oven, he immediately rushed to the oven with mouth open wondering how he could open the oven.

Orders76 · 10/05/2024 00:14

Are we allowed join in with other animals?I love this, our doggies know

  • their own name
  • the other's name
  • All the kids names and husband
  • Dog
  • Horse
  • Cat
  • Who's this
  • food/ feed
  • Go out to wee
  • Up to bed- good
  • Into the crate- not happy
  • Want to play, can I have your toy, I like that
  • Walkies?
  • Say please (at least gives law, one does a full sit up)
  • Good girl, belly rubs
  • Weirdest - get off sofa (when doing rude cleaning)
JoanOgden · 10/05/2024 09:44

Human language my cat understands; none

Cat language I understand;

Hello!
I'm hungry
I'm still hungry because that's the wrong type of food
I'm so hungry I'm about to die
I want you to come and play string with me
Stop rushing around and sit down so I can lie on your lap
I thought you were never coming back, I've been so lonely and abandoned
There's a bad cat in the garden
I want to kill those tweety sparrows
I've had a bad dream and need comforting

DrJonesIpresume · 10/05/2024 14:04

I've had success with:

Sit-sit
Paw
What? Show me... (I then have to follow cat into kitchen or to back door)
Out-out
Brushings
Milky?
Where's Daddy?
Geddown
Gerroff
NO!!!

They all know their names, including nicknames.

Soberfutures · 10/05/2024 14:40

All 3 like to ignore most of my requests. The only time one obeyed fully was when I shouted "STOP LICKING THAT POTATO!!!!"

MotherOfCatBoy · 10/05/2024 21:09

aw @JoanOgden we get all those too! Does yours make a funny chattering sound in the back of the throat for the “want that sparrow” noise?

TroysMammy · 10/05/2024 21:30

He knows loads but doesn't act on a lot of them. Some he admits to know and acts on:-

dinner,
yum yums (treats)
one, two, three ( game where we throw a yum yum and he has to find it).
His name, Haribo.

My niece's name
Nanny (mad but lovely cat lady across the road).
Fish
chicken
sleeps
lie down (when he's fussing around during the night.

Lie in (don't you dare wake me up at stupid o 'clock)

He also knows but chooses to ignore:-
Get down
Stop it
Stop whinging
No

Spudlover · 10/05/2024 21:40

I have two, girl cat is quite smart, boy cat not so much!

Girl cat you can have a full on conversation with, you ask her a question and she chatters in response. She also knows:
Her name
“Food”
“What's this?”
“Get down”
“Come on then”
“Where’s it gone?”
“Birdies”

Boy cat barely knows his name but does know “come on then” as that’s usually what I say when they’re going to get fed!

0psiedasiy · 10/05/2024 21:49

Arabic cat -doesn't understand anything, despite us adopting him at less than a year old he's now 13. Does not know what to do when English cat drops a mouth/bird/rat in front of him dead or alive. Only eats food from his bowl. Is a total lap cat.

English cat understands most things, name, Arabic cats name, bedtime, I'm locking the cat flat (he runs out as when it's locked he can't get out only in), don't touch, get down.

Humans in the house understand both cats.
