What words does your cat know?

I have had cats since age 7, but with my current two I've only just picked up on the number of words they know and respond to!
Are they super intelligent (as I suspect 😊) or do your cats know some words too?

Here's the list of what they know:

  • their own name
  • the other cat's name
  • Cat (they know we're talking about them)
  • food
  • 'feed the cats' - they go crazy when they hear that
  • out/outside- they walk straight to the door when they hear that
  • Toy - my cat puts her paw on her toy when she hears that
  • Bed - just found that one out yesterday

I suppose it's similar to dogs knowing words - but cats are a lot less responsive. Still I'm really impressed by them!

My two seem to understand a few :
Breakfast (morning wet food)
Biscuits
Supper(evening wet food)
Kisses (one of them licks or nibbles our noses)
Show Me...he will walk me over to back door, or food bowl, depending what he wants)
Bed
Garden
Their names
Also they are both trained to jump down onto our shoulders from height - useful if they get stuck on the shed roof!
They are very social smart cats!

Damnthedieteatingdoritos · 02/05/2024 14:37

I'm sure they understand pretty much everything except "no!" and "get down!" but choose not to - unless it's in their interest to do so 😽

My 4 have gathered round me and are just staring at me as in their eyes it's already supper time (it's far too early!) and I'm slacking by not paying them enough attention and looking at my phone.

DrJonesIpresume · 02/05/2024 14:42

Our cats know about as much of human language as I know of theirs:

Feed me. NOW.

I'm not budging from this chair.

Gerroff.

Open the door, I want to go out, but don't go far because I want to come in again in a minute.

I am displeased.

Tickle me under the chin please. No not there... there.

You call that food? I don't like that food - give me different food.

fieldsofbutterflies · 02/05/2024 15:12

I just say " post" and he sits at the letter box.. waiting for the post then brings it to me.
He knows " down" meaning off the bed/ sofa.. when I'm cleaning or changing bed.

fieldsofbutterflies · 02/05/2024 15:26

So basically every possible word for food 🙄

KittyCollar · 02/05/2024 15:30

GoBonobo · 02/05/2024 15:33

Her name

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 02/05/2024 15:33

Mine sometimes respond to their names, apart from that opening a dreamies packet is the only thing they pay any attention too

One of them can hear that from all the way upstairs even when he's alseep!

dodobookends · 02/05/2024 15:34

They know a lot more than they let on. They just choose to ignore most of it.

Beamur · 02/05/2024 15:37

I think they understand a lot.
But only respond selectively.
Lick-e-lix? and 'do you want some fish' usually gets a yowl.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2024 15:37

I twice told the late Mavic to go and find Cheddar, in the garden. And she did. Cheddar knew lots of words. I don't think Penelope does though.

Enough4me · 02/05/2024 15:38

Biscuits
Pouchy (wet food)
Chicken
OK then (my partner will say when he's not moving so she can sit on his lap)
Out (if naughty, but she'll walk to her cat flap and turn last minute to not go out).

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2024 15:38

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/05/2024 13:33

I have a feeling that the cat understands every.single.word, but based on the look of disdain on his face chooses to ignore virtually eveything...

Well yes, I think you might be right!

massistar · 02/05/2024 15:40

Our cat is bilingual. 🤣

DH has taught him sit, come here and paw all in Italian.

He's more like a dog really!

What words does your cat know?
AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/05/2024 15:52

His name. Maybe. My cat is very dim. My dog, on the other hand, understands an astonishing number of words and people's names! Dh only had cats as a kid, and thought cats were cleverer than dogs until we got a dog!

TheGoddessFreyja · 02/05/2024 15:58

Dreamies 🤣🤣

She also meows 'now' when she wants her dinner😂

When you say she understands ‘get down’ - how do you know? My cat may well understand it (along with ‘please stop pointing your bum at everyone on my Teams call’) but chooses to ignore
