Names for ginger kittens - and more!

Yesterday this dear cat and her five kittens were bought to me for fostering. Mum is an unchipped stray who gave birth in a greenhouse six days ago. They all seem healthy, are feeding well and mum is calm and friendly.

I don't usually name my foster cats but as these will be with me for at least three months I feel like I should. We think the three gingers are male and the two tabbies (one very dark but still noticeable stripes) female - I like Clementine for mum but would love ideas for the babies. I'm also posting because I just wanted to share my happiness at this lovely job I've been given!

I'm so glad they have you OP to care for them. you sound like you are a lovely person who really cares. What a sad start- the stray mummie is beautiful too

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/05/2023 14:27

Any new piccies

DesolationRow · 16/05/2023 19:38

They're 19 days old now, all thriving and beginning to show little differences in their personalities, but I've not settled on names yet. It's not elegant but I keep calling the tiny tortoiseshell kitten (hanging over the side of the bed) Monkey because I've never seen a kitten's face so closely resemble a monkey - she's unbelievably cute! They've just realised that the edge of their bed is not the edge of the world so mum's previous strategy for getting five minutes peace (sitting just outside the bed) is no longer working!
@Heronatemygoldfish I'm in North East England

What a gorgeous picture!

Florissant · 16/05/2023 19:50

What cuties they are. And poor mum - five kittens to keep track of.

Heronatemygoldfish · 16/05/2023 19:57

Ah drat, bit far. Midlands here. My mummy cat (currently parked on my lap) had six kittens but when we met them at CP the gingers were both spoken for and we got her and one of the other kittens. Seems like yesterday but that was 10 y ago. I adore your pics.

OnNaturesCourse · 16/05/2023 20:03

Go flower/plant themed since they were born in a greenhouse

viques · 16/05/2023 22:04

She is doing so well, they look really healthy and strong.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 16/05/2023 23:24

Gorgeous

MrsCatE · 17/05/2023 00:46

They are gorgeous! How about naming them after different types of marmalade (including the maker) tiptree, silver, Seville??! I always think double syllable works best for cats! Yup - I repeat - absolutely lovely! X

CandyLeBonBon · 17/05/2023 00:47

Tango

MrsCatE · 17/05/2023 00:49

Eek! Re the black kittens, can't carry on with that theme so suggest 'real' names!

CandyLeBonBon · 17/05/2023 00:51

Marigold, Toast, Ninja, Duracell, Nutter.

As a ginger myself, these are my gifts to you 😂

Heronatemygoldfish · 16/05/2023 12:56

Where are you (roughly!) please OP? We've been after a dark ginger (marmalade) kitten since before covid but none of the rescues round us have ever admitted to having any.

Isn't that because they don't want people picking a certain colour of cat? Surely if you want to rehome a cat the colour doesn't matter?

thaegumathteth · 17/05/2023 00:55

You could do Harry Potter themed - Molly, Ginny, Ron etc (sorry if I've missed the sexes)

Otherwise Pumpkin, Marmalade / Marmaduke, Tango, Clementine, Honey,

Nsky62 · 17/05/2023 01:27

Don't know. I just know I can't seen any kittens anywhere. Every year people talk about the kitten season but the only cats available when I phone the local rescues are adult and invariably can only live in a house with no other cats Neither any good for us (with two middle-aged moggies).

I would like a kitten that is a different colour to the cats we already have. And my son wants a ginger. So...

Marmite, Bovril, Branston?

DesolationRow · 01/06/2023 00:29

I'm not getting much done these days 🥰 The foster kittens are five weeks old now, all thriving, showing interest in solid food and successfully using their litter tray (thank goodness!). The gingers are called Rufus, Orlando and Oren, the tiny tortoiseshell is stuck with Monki as her face closely resembles one and she likes to cling to me whenever she's awake. I can't decide for the pretty tabby girl - she's the bravest, most independent and wins all the kitten wrestling matches. Mum Clementine is such a sweet cat and appreciates having a live-in babysitter...

How about Brienne, after Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones? She was brave, independent, and mighty. And it could be shortened to Bri(e). 😀

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 01/06/2023 09:45

Gorgeous I'm so jealous

NeverendingCircus · 01/06/2023 09:52

Oh they are all adorable. I love the mum! She looks so peaceful, as gingers so often are. Such gentle cats.

That's a bit daft. Why should people not have preferences? I've always had ginger cats since DH and I rescued a ginger who was so sweet natured and we learned that they often are. My ginger tom is very old now and he has been better than a dog in guarding DC when they were growing up - walked them to school and collected them from school, escorted me to friends' houses and sat outside until I was done so he could escort me home, strokes your face and purrs into your hair if you are sad. He was SEN DS's best friend when he had no friends at school. So I would always seek out a ginger cat. I know friends with other cats who are beautiful but aloof. I like a cat that plonks himself right in the middle of the family.
