New kitten - so SHOUTY!

We bought home our beautiful 12-week old kitten four days ago. He came from a very reputable breeder.

We love him. But, my god is he shouty. He meows (in a shouty way, not a sad way) ALL THE TIME. It makes no difference what we’re doing - he doesn’t stop if we play with him or cuddle him or leave him alone. He does it if we’re in the room with him or elsewhere. He even does it when he’s eating and sometimes in his sleep too. He’s so loud he drowns out the sound of the TV. He otherwise seems fine - eating, using the litter box, playing. Not hiding from us. Not massively affectionate yet but happy to be picked up for a bit and will occasionally come onto a lap. He’s confined to one room (the living room) though today we left the door to the next room (DH’s office) open and he’s ventured in there a bit.

Breeder says it’s normal for them to call out to their siblings/ mum for ‘a few days’ but that he should quieten down soon.

So I guess I’m just looking for reassurance! How long did your kitten cry/ shout for when they first arrived???

Well we can’t hear him without a picture can we?!

Curiousmouse · 25/01/2022 11:19

@SwissCheeseRentedChildren 😂😂😂😂

Wagsandclaws · 25/01/2022 11:21

Is he an Oriental or Siamese? They are shouty ( speaks from experience as I've got 3 if they loud angels )

MissHoney85 · 25/01/2022 11:23

Burmese? Ours has always been super shouty. Also mad as a box of frogs and incredibly naughty but we love him to bits. Most of the time.

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 11:34

Here he is, in a rare quiet moment

Not any of those breeds. And breeder commented on what an unusually quiet litter they were. Maybe he just hadn’t found his voice yet! Hmm

😂😂😂

@Flockameanie we need video of his cute loudness please!

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 11:44

I don’t think I can add videos, can I? But I have a corker of him sleep-meowing himself awake last night.

My SIL has a tag doll. Sweet nature but he's,11 and hasn't shut up yet. I go round and feed him when she's away and I spend most of my time in frustration asking him what he wants. Miaow, miaow, miaow. 🙉

PatriotCanes · 25/01/2022 11:46

Do you have an Alexa? Tell it to meow. The can meow to each other Grin

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 11:49

We don’t have Alexa in that room, but do have Siri set up to the TV speakers. He managed to get Siri to play the Encanto soundtrack twice yesterday.

He's lovely! What type is the little furry foghorn?

Cheerfulcharlie · 25/01/2022 11:53

Is it an Arabian Mau or similar? They are really shouty! I’ve had a few years ago and that’s just how they are. I hope your bedroom’s not near where she sleeps :-)

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 11:58

He’s a Bengal. I know they’re also known for being vocal, but this still feels on a different level!

OP posts:
Bussinbussin · 25/01/2022 12:00

Oh if he's a Bengal I don't think he's ever going to shut up, sorry!

I have a similar breed and she's coming up to 10yo, still yells at us all day for no reason at all.

Bussinbussin · 25/01/2022 12:01

And if we ignore the yelling she switches to yowling.

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 12:03

Oh don’t say that @Bussinbussin! He was virtually silent before he left the breeders.

I think really he’s still looking for his mum and siblings. Just wondering how long that typically goes on for!

SparklingLime · 25/01/2022 12:09

They need company, another cat ideally.

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 25/01/2022 12:10

He’s gorgeous! 😻 And now we need a video.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/01/2022 12:14

My Siamese cat is incredibly loud. He is constantly shouting at me. He was like it when he arrived. He was a rescue so not missing siblings. We shut him in a room on his own to settle in. That lasted 10 mins before he shouted complaints at us. Some cats have a lot to say.

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 12:25

@SparklingLime we’re at home all day! He meows whether we’re with him or not. So I don’t think it’s a company thing. Or at least not human company.

I wish we could have got a pair, but it wasn’t feasible and the breeder has no issue with them going alone

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 12:26

@SwissCheeseRentedChildren I don’t think I can upload videos to mumsnet can I?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/01/2022 12:27

He's very cute but I've never seen a Bengal that looks like that Shock

OwlNoises101 · 25/01/2022 12:28

Like pp , I also have an uber gobby Siamese! It's just how they are. I have learned to love her constant talking/shouting. It's part of their personality. Enjoy your gorgeous boy.

MyTwoBengals · 25/01/2022 12:31

“He’s a Bengal “ 🤣🤣🤣
Says it all.

I have two of the noisy b*ggers
