New kitten - so SHOUTY!

We bought home our beautiful 12-week old kitten four days ago. He came from a very reputable breeder.

We love him. But, my god is he shouty. He meows (in a shouty way, not a sad way) ALL THE TIME. It makes no difference what we’re doing - he doesn’t stop if we play with him or cuddle him or leave him alone. He does it if we’re in the room with him or elsewhere. He even does it when he’s eating and sometimes in his sleep too. He’s so loud he drowns out the sound of the TV. He otherwise seems fine - eating, using the litter box, playing. Not hiding from us. Not massively affectionate yet but happy to be picked up for a bit and will occasionally come onto a lap. He’s confined to one room (the living room) though today we left the door to the next room (DH’s office) open and he’s ventured in there a bit.

Breeder says it’s normal for them to call out to their siblings/ mum for ‘a few days’ but that he should quieten down soon.

So I guess I’m just looking for reassurance! How long did your kitten cry/ shout for when they first arrived???

He looks very Siamese to me . We have Siamese - noisy but adorable

MrsAliceRichards · 25/01/2022 13:20

One of our cats doesn't shut up from the moment he wakes up until the moment he falls asleep at night. He is one of life's great conversationalists. I'm currently working from home and all my colleagues know him for all the wrong reasons as they can hear him screaming when he is outside and wants to be let in 🙈. He's an absolute ratbag and was from when we got him at 9 weeks. He isn't a breed but jeepers he is LOUD!!! That said, he is the best company, I just wish he didn't feel the need to talk ALL the time. Congrats though, he's very very cute!!

chesirecat99 · 25/01/2022 13:23

A bengal... Yes, he will probably stop calling for his mum and siblings in a few days but then he'll start calling for you or food or cuddles or play or just because.

HappyPie82 · 25/01/2022 13:24

My bog standard british moggy meows all day!!
So we just meow back at him, god knows what we're saying but he seems happy with our answers Grin

CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 25/01/2022 13:25

my kitten meowed constantly for about 3 days, turns out that unknown to the people at cat protection their mother had still been feeding them even though fully weaned etc. He was ok after that although not a Bengal

Good luck

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/01/2022 13:25

Bengals get louder 😻 beautiful boy.

You get used to it & miss it when their gone but you’ve got a long time to enjoy it.

ClariceQuiff · 25/01/2022 13:28

I love a loud cat! You're so lucky OP.

Beamur · 25/01/2022 13:33

He is gorgeous!
I have quiet orientals, I'm actually disappointed they're not chattier. My previous lad was a great conversationalist. Particularly liked joining into phone calls and telecalls.

Flockameanie · 25/01/2022 13:37

Gorgeous @ItsJustTheOneSwanActually!

Yes, we’ve been doing a lot of meowing back of him @HappyPie82

@CrumpleHornedSnowcack he was suckling from mum when I went to collect him, despite her not having any milk/ them being weaned for ages. Apparently she and they just really liked it! So, yes, poor mite. One minute he’s doing that, next he’s whisked off to a strange place.

Mr Noisy. He is shouting at me here as I put a bench in the garden

New kitten - so SHOUTY!
ShowOfHands · 25/01/2022 13:46

Aww I'd love a noisy one. My Calico is silent nearly all the time. She does a little ack ack chirrup at the birds very occasionally but otherwise, no noise. She has never miaowed. Not even once. If she wants something, she simply comes over and stares at you unblinkingly until you do what she wants.

MrsAliceRichards · 25/01/2022 14:27

@MaybeHeIsMyCat is he grey? He looks like my shouty divil!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/01/2022 14:29

My dozy Persian has an awful lot to say for herself. She has an opinion on everything. I've learned to steer clear of politics!

Black Smile with one tooth!

MilduraS · 25/01/2022 14:47

If he's a Bengal, there's no hope. Ours used to shout at us for everything (especially closed doors). It was so bad we ended up sleeping with our bedroom door open at all times. Not brilliant when you have visitors but preferable to the 5am screaming that would have woken them up.

Yours let you sleep till 5am? I locked mine in the kitchen overnight or 4:30am was wake up time 😭. Dh flipped the door handle around so you had to lift rather than pull or he’d twang on it all night long.
MrsAliceRichards · 25/01/2022 16:00

@MaybeHeIsMyCat brilliant! We've a black and a grey that are brothers and he's so like them in the face! Love the one tooth

oncemoreunto · 25/01/2022 16:50

My Siamese shouted for the whole 17 years of his life.
If I ever told him off for anything he always answered back, worse than the dc.
Enjoy the conversations OP.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/01/2022 20:26

Our Bengal used to answer back too “what are you doing?”

Our cattery would put all the meezers and bengals close together. In the pens furthest from the office.

Supersimkin2 · 25/01/2022 20:46

He is just perfect.

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 26/01/2022 00:34

I can’t decide if Mr Noisy is super-cute, or the evilest cat in the universe.

@Flockameanie

He’s a Bengal. I know they’re also known for being vocal, but this still feels on a different level!
I had a cat who was half bengal. He meowed loudly from the day we got him and every day of his life (17.5). It's like he was talking to you. You get used to it Smile
cobblers123 · 26/01/2022 09:12

I have a long haired bog standard ordinary mixed breed cat, he is around 12 and he drives me mad with the constant meowing/ yowling. He's always been vocal but he is so much worse now.

In the morning it's deafening, he shouts all the time.

You might just have a shouty cat regardless of breed. Smile
