New kitten - so SHOUTY!

We bought home our beautiful 12-week old kitten four days ago. He came from a very reputable breeder.

We love him. But, my god is he shouty. He meows (in a shouty way, not a sad way) ALL THE TIME. It makes no difference what we’re doing - he doesn’t stop if we play with him or cuddle him or leave him alone. He does it if we’re in the room with him or elsewhere. He even does it when he’s eating and sometimes in his sleep too. He’s so loud he drowns out the sound of the TV. He otherwise seems fine - eating, using the litter box, playing. Not hiding from us. Not massively affectionate yet but happy to be picked up for a bit and will occasionally come onto a lap. He’s confined to one room (the living room) though today we left the door to the next room (DH’s office) open and he’s ventured in there a bit.

Breeder says it’s normal for them to call out to their siblings/ mum for ‘a few days’ but that he should quieten down soon.

So I guess I’m just looking for reassurance! How long did your kitten cry/ shout for when they first arrived???

Just love Ollie's adoring gaze. Little sweetheart.

He is gorgeous! 😻 Give him a cuddle for me.

My tuxedo is a shouty cat, he gets louder if he doesn't get his own way immediately (such as when I have the audacity to actually have to open food cans/pouches to put them in his dish, apparently I should just be able to click my fingers and the food should appear instantly...) In fairness, he does love me better when I say " you're shouting at me again" ....

But he is forgiven his loudness and his impatience because he was the one loud enough to alert my son when he and his siblings had been dumped in son's garage at days old. Several years on and I wouldn't be without a single one of them hence my username

Enjoy your shouty cat, you'll have some great conversations.

Ah we've got a shouter too! Just a bog standard moggy but has the loudest miaow I've ever heard. He just shouts at you when you arrive home or when he arrives home or when he walks in a room or whenever he feels like it really. He's very brash. Our other cat is a teeny tiny quiet little one in comparison, she's barely got a croaky squeak of a miaow. Love that they are all so different.

Flockameanie · 26/01/2022 10:54

I’m happy to report he’s been much quieter since yesterday afternoon. Clearly settling in and getting comfy. He’s a dreamboat and we’re all besotted.

I have a run of the mill mog and he is the most vocal cat I have ever had in my life. I adore him and he drives me mentalllll in equal measures.

You just have a VERY SHOUTY CAT.... I recommend ear defenders 😂😂😂

He has actually meowed himself hoarse! He’s very squeaky today. Tiny muppet.

That’s adorable 🥰!

At least conversations with cats can always go your way "you think I'm the best feeder?" Miaow "you missed me?", Miaow, miaow...so much easier than talking with DC who have headphones in.

@slavetothekittens - that’s a lovely story that it was his loud voice that alerted you.

This link has been posted before on the Litter Tray but here it is again showing proper shouty cats:

(If the link doesn’t work look at ‘Our Siamese cats at shower time’ on YouTube and you’ll see the clip). I find myself getting stressed out just listening to it!

We have a part siamese who is the most vocal cat we have ever had. (Sh's 17 now). She has the most extraordinary range of sounds. We have learned what almost all of them are (she surprises us with new ones). This morning DH all of a sudden lept out of bed at a rate of knots. When he came back I asked him what was up and he said that ShoutyCat had done her 'Poo Yowl' and he realised he'd forgotten to refill the litter tray last night.

Clearly though she had been waiting for DH to get to grips for way too long because she did not give her 'thanks' meow, just the 'fuck you, I was waiting' meow. (It was 3 am to be fair).
