I lost my Bertie towards the end of last year and he was poisoned by anti-freeze. We'll never know if it was intentional, but it was the first really cold weekend of the winter so I choose to believe it was accidental. It broke my heart.

cricketmum84 · 02/07/2021 21:09

I'm so sorry @coastergirl 😢

We were so lucky to get ivy into the vets early enough for treatment. I don't know how I would have coped if we had lost her. She is my therapy cat, she comes for love and snuggles as soon as she senses I am feeling down or depressed. She's a clever little munchkin.

coastergirl · 02/07/2021 21:16

@cricketmum84 do you know what she was poisoned with? Bertie came in on a Sunday teatime and seemed fine. About an hour later he was violently sick and became extremely weak. I got him to the emergency vets and they did everything they could for him, but the damage was irreversible. They consulted with experts and even said that if money was no option he could have gone to London (I live in Southport) to go on the country's only feline dialysis machine. But even if I had the money, I couldn't have put him through it. He was feral as a kitten and only trusted me, and that took a long time. He was put to sleep in my arms, in the front seat of my car 😭

coastergirl · 02/07/2021 21:18

I meant to say that the vet told me that unless you see the cat ingest anti-freeze and immediately administer and antidote (vodka!!) then the cat stands no chance. It rarely happens.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 02/07/2021 21:28

I've just got back from Sherwood - I've missed a lot!

Is everybody who had to go to the vets safely back?

FLUFFY!!! New kitty-cat! Fab news! Puddy is just like my first family cat who was called Paddy. She was a tux, small, round, and feisty as hell. Nobody messed with Paddy. She even survived an attack from two dogs. Her full name was Paddy-Paws Pushkin 😁

Leroy is very "meh" to see me. He's had a fab time with his sitter. Might be slightly miffed about that 😂

cricketmum84 · 02/07/2021 21:35

Oh @coastergirl that is utterly heartbreaking 😢 no they didn't find out what she had been poisoned with. Initially with the blood tests they were treating it as congenital kidney disease and told us we could take her home with a guarded prognosis of 6 months or have scans and further treatment. We went for the scans and they found scarring and fluid around her kidneys that suggested kidney injury caused by poisoning rather than kidney disease. She was only 18 months old at the time. They just kept pushing with the fluids and tested every two days and the bloods kept getting lower and lower.

Eventually they sent her home with special food and told us she was in stage 4 kidney failure and we may have her for a year. A month later they did another test and all her levels were normal. The vet couldn't believe it. Since then every check has been normal too.

She is a little miracle

Papergirl1968 · 02/07/2021 21:38

Happy to report that Matt is much more himself today and is back to eating for England.
I couldn’t get Socks into her carrier so had to use Matt’s and when we got to the vets she had had an accident in it. She also yowled all the way there and back. But a clean bill of health and we just came away with flea treatment for her.
Less happy news about the pigeon - I couldn’t see it this morning so let Socks out and later spotted it dead in the garden. It had clearly been had by something, just not sure it was Socks. It seems rather a stretch for a cat who hasn’t caught so much as a fly before. But then again it was injured and weak so maybe. I apologised to it as I shovelled its body into a plastic bag. Sad

coastergirl · 02/07/2021 21:45

@Papergirl1968 I'm so glad Matt is fighting fit.

@cricketmum84 your girl really is a fighter. It was awful with Bertie. He was only 2. He also went missing for 2 months last year when I moved, and it took so much to get him back. He was so happy to be back with me, and then that happened.

coastergirl · 02/07/2021 21:45

Fluffy how is Puddy getting on?

cricketmum84 · 02/07/2021 21:51

RIP pigeon :(

Supersimkin2 · 02/07/2021 22:23

Congrats on giving Mr Pigeon a decent end, Paper, it's a bit upsetting isn't it. Well done Darling Matt the Magnificent on return to gastronomical form.

Capn smells. He won't be brushed, too hot. Graciously accepts facial stroking with a cool hand.

In national news, the Croydon cat killer, who went around the suburbs down from here with a machete, has been caught and is in court. Dirty little freak that he is, there's a lot of public outrage and he'll be no stranger to prison food for some time. Yay.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/07/2021 22:35

She seems happier tonight, she’s run up to the bed & jumped up to dh for fuss.

nettie434 · 02/07/2021 23:30

What an eventful few days! I am so pleased about Princess Puddy, Fuffycloudland77. I think she has found herself an excellent new home.

This may not help much Just, but when you are not feeling confident, just think that there is some random on the internet who thinks you are a cross between a cat whisperer and a lion tamer (of the nice kind obviously). I am always in awe of what you do.

Papergirl1968, glad that Matt is feeling better.

Allergic, hope the shingles are improving.

NotMyCat, I am sitting down swinging my legs and sighing loudly waiting impatiently for a photo of Paws in a bow tie.

Cricketmum84 glad that Ivy made a good recovery. It was so sad about Bertie, Coastergirl. NMC looks a bit like Bertie from what I remember.

Hoping Capn responds to emergency grooming measures and that impressed that Magic has enjoyed her post vet visit and that a transport solution is found for the Idiot Sisters. Did you have a nice time in Sherwood, Yesitsme?

coastergirl · 03/07/2021 00:13

@nettie434 that is a seriously impressive summing-uo of the thread!

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/07/2021 06:33

Dh said flat cats sound shit so I’ll just order 4. I’ve got used to open windows & cant go back now. He’s also genuinely horrified I ordered cat claw nippers for her. I’m a flipping podiatrist. She milk paddles a lot & her claws are like needles.

Is that the security guard @Supersimkin2

Supersimkin2 · 03/07/2021 07:09

Yes, that awful creature that looks like a boiled pig.

So glad Leroy reunited and order restored.

Capn responded to the pet freshener sprAy by fleeing under the sofa, with me rattling dreamies and pleading until 1am till he came out. We are both shattered and I worry the neighbours heard the begging entreaties cos I sounded like a sap.

On me now, triumphant raspy purring. What’s a bit of ‘personal fragrance’ between friends, eh.

Milk paddling! She’s no fool, our new Princess. Hope she enjoyed night 2.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/07/2021 07:41

Have you tried a damp microfibre cloth on him?

cricketmum84 · 03/07/2021 08:01

@Fluffycloudland77

Have you tried a damp microfibre cloth on him?
We do that with Betsy when it gets too warm. She's so goddam fluffy!
Fluffycloudland77 · 03/07/2021 08:26

I’ve just ordered a grooming glove for Puddy. Should be here tomorrow.

When it was really hot in 2018 Asbo kept trying to sleep on my heated throw which was furry. Odd choice when it’s 26c inside.

cricketmum84 · 03/07/2021 08:28

Well that's ivy off to the vets for her booster jab with my husband! Only one of us is allowed in and seeing as I need a wheelchair it's down to him. She will be having her annual kidney check too so please keep your paws crossed for good results.

Betsy was very very confused as to why her big sister was trapped in a box. She sat on top of it trying to get her paws through the bars. I think she was trying to spring her 😂 she's wandering around the living room now doing her little chirrups searching for ivycat.

cricketmum84 · 03/07/2021 08:30

@Fluffycloudland77 please will you let me know how you get on with the grooming glove? I was thinking about one for Betsy as she detests the brush and causes me injuries every time I try...

YesItsMeIDontCare · 03/07/2021 08:39

@Fluffycloudland77 - we have Flat Cats. I wouldn't trust Leroy with a full sized window, but we have them on all the top opening windows. They are also very good insect screens!

@Supersimkin2 - order was properly restored this morning when he came for his cuddle and treadle. He spent a good few hours moping about the departure of his sitter 🙄
I can't find anything recent on t'interweb about the Croydon Cat Killer. Do you have a link?

Supersimkin2 · 03/07/2021 09:19

Brighton not Croydon I got it wrong. Leroy playing Hard To Get.

Capn loves a damp cloth, as it happens. Got enough fur for two new kittens off his tail after breakfast.

darumafan · 03/07/2021 09:36

We got this stinky dirty boy back from his latest 2 year holiday at the scrap yard yesterday.
His brothers are very confused about it all.

Very kind comment, coastergirl. I had to do it all in one go because you can't start to post and scroll back!

I think I know why you suggested Croydon, Supersimkin2. There was a report a few years ago of a Croydon cat serial killer. It wasn't just in Croydon - deaths in a huge radius were being attributed to this alleged person. However, experts said the cats died as a result of foxes and/or cars and it was an example of a 'moral panic'.

Anyway, it's good the Brighton man has been caught and tried. It's such a sadistic thing to do.

Hope Ivy's trip to the vets goes ok, Cricketmum84.
