Betsy was similar when we first adopted her. She was found in someone's garden at a week old with no mum or siblings around. She was handreared alone so wasn't socialised. She would bite anyone who went near her when we adopted her at 10 weeks old. A year on and she accepts loves and ear washes from our older cat. You can't pick her up though and the only strokes she tolerates are ear tickles and they must be on her terms.
About once a month she comes and lays next to me on an evening. These are the most precious times because she has actually chosen to come and snuggle. She will take a finger off if you try to stroke her body or tail though.
It's really such a special feeling when a grumpy cat actually looks for some affection from you.
