My cat is currently 14 and I thought he would live to around 20 but apparently this is quite rare. My friend says cats on average live to about 16 which means I got less than 2 years with him ☹️ has anyone had cats living past 16? Feeling sad

I've had three or four 25 year olds and personally knew a 27 year old.

Rottie454 · 09/12/2018 20:53

Ooh wow that's made me feel a bit happier Grin

DH’s youngest family cat is still going strong at 22. Her brother died last year at 21.

ragged · 09/12/2018 20:55

all the cats we had growing up died age 12-13. I'm so amazed as an adult to learn about cats living to 16-20+.
My oldest cat now may be 14-15.

Rottie454 · 09/12/2018 20:56

ragged hopefully both our cats will live to be 20+ Smile

Currently lone cat is 16.

The vet told me cats were never meant to live this long. Left to their own devices, most would only live to about 11-12.

ragged · 09/12/2018 20:58

Feral cats rarely get > 5 yrs iirc.

KittiesInsane · 09/12/2018 20:58
  1. I miss her. But hers was a life 'artificially' extended by treatment for thyroid disease, which is very common in older cats, and I suspect she would have pegged it at around 16 if untreated.
Toomanybaubles · 09/12/2018 20:59

18 and 20 here but a feral I rescued only made it to ten.

Wolfiefan · 09/12/2018 21:00

Cuddled a 21 year old girl in a cattery the other week. Very sweet.

Bamchicabaawaa · 09/12/2018 21:00

My childhood cats lived to 8, 18 and 19, and both my grandmas died at 18.
The old lady next door right now has a cat who is 23!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/12/2018 21:00

Our first cat was 19 when he died, we'd had him as a rescue at about 6 weeks old.

Our second cat was only 2 (brain tumour) and sadly we lost our 3rd cat 2 weeks ago at only one year old (dog related accident). We are hoping that his sister is going to be one of the lucky ones.
:(

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2018 21:01

My childhood cats lived to 18 & 19.

I lost my last one at 15.

NameChanger22 · 09/12/2018 21:02

Our cat is 15. We worry all the time about her dying.

Ellasshitholekitchenpjpiigp · 09/12/2018 21:02

My childhood cat lived to 22, we thought it was on its last legs for about 4 years! Used to give her fresh fish ( thinking it was a last supper) she got a new lease of life from it.

obviouslymarvellous · 09/12/2018 21:05

I had one for 26 years, one for 24 and lost my beloved Molly earlier this year she was 20. She was the first cat me and dh got together and she was older than any of my children. I still miss her now x

Icequeen01 · 09/12/2018 21:06

My sister had a cat and her two kittens who all lived into their 20's. The mother cat was 23 when she died and her kittens lived until they were 21 and 24. The oldest cat I have ever had was 19. The two cats I currently have are 6 and they are never going to die!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/12/2018 21:07

Of my previous cats I've had one live to 20 and a couple lasted to about 17. The other 3 I've had got to about 13 or 14.

elfycat · 09/12/2018 21:07

19, but I got her when she was 18 (owner had died of old age and no-one wanted the manky old tortie with heart pills) so I can't claim to have contributed much to her longevity, just the last 9 months.

I was gutted when a DC went at 11 from cancer, my family always have cats to about 16-17 as a minimum (barring accidents).

DC on my lap is 13, but he's thin with thyroid issues. The medication is carefully balanced not to damage his kidneys, but he's losing weight slowly and can't have a higher dose. I think there's a year or so in him so he gets a decent amount of cuddles.

Feline1 · 09/12/2018 21:10

My lovely boy was around 22 when he died and my girgeous girl was 21. Both amazing, sleek black cats. My best friends too.

expatinspain · 09/12/2018 21:15

Mine both lived to 19.

JurassicGirl · 09/12/2018 21:19

Lost my oldest at 16.5 years old but my mums cat is 20 & still going stong!

slowco4ch · 09/12/2018 21:20

23 for my old lady, never a thing wrong with her. She's 10 years gone now and still miss her.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/12/2018 21:38

Mines not allowed to die. We have discussed it and he can go when I do.

Vinorosso74 · 09/12/2018 21:40

Our old girl was 15 (we think). I think average is about 16 but I know someone who had sisters-one lived to 20 the other 22. Our neighbour's lived to 18 and a half.
