My cat is currently 14 and I thought he would live to around 20 but apparently this is quite rare. My friend says cats on average live to about 16 which means I got less than 2 years with him ☹️ has anyone had cats living past 16? Feeling sad

My parents cat is 18 and still going strong previous cat was 17 when he died

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 09/12/2018 22:49

My oldest was 19. DSis's 3 cats all died this year at 18. The oldest cat I've known was 23. My current one is about 15 but may be a bit older, he was a rescue and was a young adult then. The one before him was about 10 according to the vet's estimate, although the rescue centre had thought he was younger.

My current cat is 19...a bit doddery and deaf but still going strong. My previous cat was a complete bruiser and was 20 when he got hit by a car and killed instantly. He would have gone on forever otherwise as never looked his age or acted any differently.

The old boy on his Christmas cushion...

My last one lived to 18 and a friend of ours had one that lived to 24.

cleanhousewastedlife · 09/12/2018 23:24

Ours is 18. Starting to seem very old. It's not allowed. She has to stay!

Cheripie64 · 09/12/2018 23:59

My oldest big fluffy tabby, got to 19. I had to have Billy pts at 14 in April this year. His sister Tilly is going ok, lost a bit of weight recently, has had blood tests at the vet and no issues, trying to get some weight on her, has improved a bit as have her on kitten food, hoping for a few more years

My childhood cat, a half Siamese girl with a miaow to wake the dead, lived to 21 and died naturally.
My second, a bonkers tabby boy with four white feet, yellow eyes and a wonky tail, had to be pts at 18.5 years with kidney failure. Miss them both.

ReindeerGlitter · 10/12/2018 01:03

My sweetie had to be pts this year after an aortic thromboembolism at age 18. She was failing for the last two years though. Here she is as a kitten and shortly before she died

21 but I know of a 26 year old. She looked like a moving road kill

Rockbird · 10/12/2018 04:56

We have two 18 year olds in the extended family. They both have various problems and are so frail, I can't imagine what a 26 year old cat would be like. Fingers crossed we'll get to find out.

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/12/2018 05:09

My last two cats both lived to be 22.

Alfie190 · 10/12/2018 05:39

Oldest cat I have had died at about 14. I don't think 20 is rare but it is definitely not average.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/12/2018 06:53

Harry is another one who has been told he's got to live forever, or for at least as long as me. He's about 13 now so these posts give me hope that he's got a few more years left in him yet!

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 10/12/2018 07:00

We have had loads over 20. I always thought 20 was a normal age for a cat? Is it not?

lunar1 · 10/12/2018 08:01

I've had mine for 14 years, they think she was 1 when I ish when I rescued her.

lunar1 · 10/12/2018 08:01

Sorry, not sure what happened thereConfused

makingmyway10 · 10/12/2018 08:53

I lost my old girl earlier this year, she was 21. We rescued her when she was 6 months old and she lived to a fine old age. We had to make the sad decision to have her put to sleep as her health had failed to the point where her quality of life was not good. She was comfortable until the last two weeks of her life when she declined slowly . I still miss her every day.
21 years is a long time and we were lucky to have her love all those years.

tierraJ · 10/12/2018 09:33
