Kitten not eaten, today is the third day

Hello, I have the vets booked today for as soon as it opens for my girl cat

She's 5 months old, usually sleeps and lays around a lot but would come for cuddles and rub her head on me and purr etc and was very affectionate. The last 2 days she hasn't eaten anything and will refuse all food. She wasn't drinking either and seemed dehydrated. I gave her water in a syringe and last night she did drink a little from a water bowl and the same this morning. Today is the third day not eating.

I guess I'm writing here because I'm worried and the vet isn't open yet. She doesn't seem in pain and will let me prod and poke her and pick her up without being bothered. She did a wee but I haven't seen her poo, though she could have done one but it could have also been from boy cat.

She's just sitting on her scratching post curled up with her head down and eyes closed. Not sleeping just sitting there, she was doing the same last night. She has moved around the house as the scratching post is downstairs and litter box upstairs and I've seen her hanging around both places. I offered her tuna last night and she licked a bit of the brine stuff but didn't eat any of the tuna. Offered her different types of cat food wet and dry and all rejected. I shook the dreamies bag and she came up to me but when I offered her a dreamie she just ignored it :(

I don't know how she can have been fine a few days ago and to have changed like this with the only real symptom I can see being not eating. She's indoor only and has never been outside. I'm thinking maybe she ate something she shouldn't and it's stuck inside her? But as I said she will let me prod and poke and I would've thought if she had a blockage that would hurt her but she shows no signs of pain.

I also gave her a strong wormer (drontal) last night and 15 min after she vomited bile, no sign of worms anywhere. She vomited again this morning but I think it's because she's so hungry? It's just yellow bile. My dog does the same out of hunger if I delay feeding him for any reason

I've rambled on a bit... anyone have any suggestions or insight before it's vet time? :(

Ok, she could be in trouble for any number of reasons but being an indoor cat suggests some of them won't be relevant.

It could be an actual illness

it could be a blockage as you say - or a stomach infection, or something she has eaten, or poisoning.

It could be constipation, it could be a reaction to a flea product (has she been treated with anything lately?)

She may have something stuck in her throat or an infected tooth.

You are doing the right thing takeing her in this morning and I hope it is something that's simple to treat.

Will she let you open her mouth? You will see if a tooth is wobbly or discoloured. But it is the first thing a vet will do, so you may wish to let her be till she's in professional hands - don't want her to bite you or hate you and refuse to go in the basket

So many possibilities, Hubblez so you've done the right thing in getting her to the vet. It sounds (the 'just sitting there' ) as if she's in some discomfort so fingers crossed for her.

Let us know how she gets on.

Thanks Rooners. I can open her mouth. Teeth all look healthy, sturdy and white. Gums are pale but because of dehydration I think. She hasn't had any flea treatment, only the wormer, but she hasn't been itching either.

I'm hoping it is constipation and maybe she doesn't wanna eat cos she knows it won't come out. She hasn't eaten anything irregular that I've seen though. She's on whiskas wet cat food and applaws dry food mixed in and hasn't had any treats at all recently. I've been with her all week during the day and at night she sleeps on my bed so I would have thought I would have seen if she ate something bad. It's always a possibility though.

The vet app was originally to neuter my boy kitten but I am going to swap it to the girl. But only really have the budget of the neuter to spend on her due to unexpected payments I had to make last week :( so I'm hoping it's nothing serious

It could be any number of things and of course the vet is really the only one able to diagnose.

But yes, has she recently been flea treated and if so, what with? And also do you by any chance have any cut flowers in your house (I'm wondering about lily pollen poisoning).

And if money is generally tight you should really consider insurance.

Thanks Cozie, she does sit around a lot usually which is why it took longer for me to see she was acting out and not eating, wish I had noticed earlier and I could have taken her yesterday but I was hoping she would eat overnight, no luck.

It's a bitch waiting for the vets to open! Just sitting here feeling helpless, she looks as if she's dead the way she's laying :( will update when we have seen the vet

I've only had her about a month and do have insurance but I got it the day before she stopped eating and it has a 10 day policy thing before it activates so for now it is useless :( not been flea treated. Haven't heard of lily pollen poisoning.

DP did actually get me some flowers a couple of days ago but I have no idea what they are, don't think they're lillies, they're also in a room that the cats aren't allowed into and the door is always closed

Good luck. It is worrying when you have no idea what it will cost.

We used to insure and then the refused to pay for anything she had had in the past, and so I cancelled it and decided I'd probably save enough money by not having insurance, to pay for anything that did arise iyswim.

But seeing as she is young, it is probably more worthwhile having it for you (mine was 5 when we got her)

It actually could be lily poisoning I think?? I put a pic of the flowers on my profile if you can see them. I have no idea what a lily is, are there any there? A leaf dropped off when I was putting them in a vase. The cat could have eaten it?

Boy cat is fine. I know a leaf dropped off though and she has same symptoms as it says online regarding lily poisoning. Just depends if Jose flowers are actually lilies or not

That's a shame about the insurance. And what Rooners says about insurance is fair enough if you have a bank account with a few thousand in that you could access if necessary. Then you can take a chance on no having it, and yes you might save money. However if you don't have that financial safety net then you could be faced with a bill of a few thousand pounds in even your cat's very first year. And you certainly won't have saved up that by not having insurance by then. So if money is generally tight insurance is essential. Still, you have it, which is great.

They are so dangerous to cats that you have to be incredibly careful. Even if you arranged them in a different room, and carried them through the house to the room where the cats don't have access, it's possible for some pollen to fall on the floor. If the cats walk on it, it will stick to their paws, and then can ingest it when they clean themselves. Let's hope it's not that though (but it's good to be aware of it) and best of luck to her.

Ah phew I would have felt horrible if they were lilies! I'm totally clueless about flowers haha. Still no closer to knowing what's wrong with her though :( another half hour til vet opens

I can't see a lily there but flowers are not my strong suit so another poster may know what's in that bunch. Worth mentioning to the vet howvere, in a general way, that you've just been given a bunch of flowers even if you don't know exactly what they are. That way, their mind can be focussed.

Would a cat eat a leaf on the ground? I thought most of the danger from lilies came from cats getting pollen on their fur and then licking it off?
Hopefully it's just a sore throat - my boy cat stopped eating when he was tiny and as soon as the vet gave him a jab he inhaled a plate of food (and hasn't stopped since). Hopefully your cat has something similar. Lilies should have a bloody warning label though, hardly anyone seems to know how poisonous they are.

I took exception in writing to a MN-allowed advert for flowers - on the Litter Tray page itself - which showed some very prominent lilies in the bunch. (Florists like them because they're showy and long lasting.)

I see that the advert has been back over the last few days though. I don't know what more I can do.

I am going to ban all flowers from entering the house now to be on the safe side haha, was super panicking when I thought they could be lilies!

Ok we're back. The vet couldn't find anythjng wrong with her, temperature fine, heart fine etc, poked around a lot and said the only thing she could find is that her abdomen might be a tiny bit tense. We were offered medicine or blood tests and X-rays so picked medicine

She had 2 injections and a pain relief for incase she was in pain, and has some medicine I have to give her an hour before trying her with food again, that protects her gut or something. Vet thought the vomiting could be the main issue and her not wanting food due to that. Going to leave her to sleep a bit then try the medicine and food again

She perked up in the vets and was rubbing her head on me through her cage but is sulking again now home :( I hope the injections and medicine work, she said to take her back on Monday if not but that would be for all the tests which she quoted £400 for which I can't afford. But the vet saw no reason for her to not eat which is good I suppose - hopefully just a bug
