Kitten not eaten, today is the third day

Hello, I have the vets booked today for as soon as it opens for my girl cat

She's 5 months old, usually sleeps and lays around a lot but would come for cuddles and rub her head on me and purr etc and was very affectionate. The last 2 days she hasn't eaten anything and will refuse all food. She wasn't drinking either and seemed dehydrated. I gave her water in a syringe and last night she did drink a little from a water bowl and the same this morning. Today is the third day not eating.

I guess I'm writing here because I'm worried and the vet isn't open yet. She doesn't seem in pain and will let me prod and poke her and pick her up without being bothered. She did a wee but I haven't seen her poo, though she could have done one but it could have also been from boy cat.

She's just sitting on her scratching post curled up with her head down and eyes closed. Not sleeping just sitting there, she was doing the same last night. She has moved around the house as the scratching post is downstairs and litter box upstairs and I've seen her hanging around both places. I offered her tuna last night and she licked a bit of the brine stuff but didn't eat any of the tuna. Offered her different types of cat food wet and dry and all rejected. I shook the dreamies bag and she came up to me but when I offered her a dreamie she just ignored it :(

I don't know how she can have been fine a few days ago and to have changed like this with the only real symptom I can see being not eating. She's indoor only and has never been outside. I'm thinking maybe she ate something she shouldn't and it's stuck inside her? But as I said she will let me prod and poke and I would've thought if she had a blockage that would hurt her but she shows no signs of pain.

I also gave her a strong wormer (drontal) last night and 15 min after she vomited bile, no sign of worms anywhere. She vomited again this morning but I think it's because she's so hungry? It's just yellow bile. My dog does the same out of hunger if I delay feeding him for any reason

I've rambled on a bit... anyone have any suggestions or insight before it's vet time? :(

Haha ok, no more leaves! Going to take some blankets and stuff to donate too when we go to pick her up again :)

Brilliant news. So pleased for you and Hubcat! Flowers

cozietoesie · 10/03/2014 15:48

Goodish news then.

And who knows what cats or kittens might find. In my time, I've had to remove all sorts of things from houses - they seem to have a particular fondness for chewing rubber bands, especially the thick type like those which posties use for putting round mail - so if you have any of those, either dump them or keep them locked away.

Basically, if you have cats it's best to go round the place with the sort of eagle eye that you would use for a toddler and remove things which are small, light and 'flickable/chewable'. They're not as bad as puppies - your Manolos are probably pretty safe - but they can get into anything small before you notice.

cozietoesie · 10/03/2014 15:57

Oh - and if anyone is minded to donate a small present \link{http://www.celiahammond.org/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=71&MMN_position=84:84\here's} the CHAT online contribution page - and also \link{http://www.celiahammond.org/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=78&MMN_position=81:81\their donation page} so next time you're online you could add on a carton or two of nosh through the Amazon wish list - or a small bung if you want. Wink

Following this thread with many positive thoughts for your kitty, but as a gardener I can't see any poppies in your flowers. There are carnations and several types of chrysanthemum, but no poppies or lilies.

Hope she's ok.

HadABadDay2014 · 10/03/2014 18:00

Hope she gets well soon

stinkyfluffycat · 10/03/2014 18:31

Oh that's better news - let's hope the vet finds out what's wrong and fixes her! Any small objects missing?

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/03/2014 19:36

Well that's a relief!

Mine ate the elastic off the chicken once, no side effects but we never saw him do it. It just vanished off the work top.

I'm more careful now Smile

Hubblez · 10/03/2014 23:25

I'm not working at the moment so have been with her during the days all the time and never saw her even look interested in any random bits on the floor. The dogs have a rope toy though and when I got home and looked more carefully there were strands of that hidden in the rug that they'd pulled out. I suppose if it is string then that's what it would be - dogs are banned from ropes from now on! The vet said she might not have intentionally eaten it but caught it while grooming and the barbs on her tongue could have forced her to swallow it.

DP phoned earlier to check how she was and they said she had been really badly dehydrated and they confirmed she was now on fluids and they'll do a scan tomorrow to check for any string. She did seem to be drinking quite a bit of water when I had her though, I knew she was dehydrated but didn't know how bad :(

I slept when I got home til just now since I'd been up all night checking on her. Only problem is now I can't sleep again so once more I am up all night, I'm turning into an owl Grin

Boy cat keeps looking for her :(

And thanks for everyone's support and advice through all this, really appreciate it Thanks

cozietoesie · 10/03/2014 23:32

You've been really strong there - and poor DP must have really been worried not only at her situation but also at the thought that he'd bought the flowers which were the earliest potential culprit.

She's in the best place now though. (What a difference 24 hours can make, eh?)

Let us know how she gets on tomorrow. I think we'll all be keeping our fingers crossed.

timtam23 · 10/03/2014 23:37

Oh Hubblez that does sound quite a bit more hopeful. Fingers crossed that she pulls through. Thank goodness TCN knew a helpful vet.

FannyFifer · 10/03/2014 23:49

Hope your little cat improves overnight.

trufflehunterthebadger · 11/03/2014 00:03

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, OP. that your kitten makes a full recovery without too many vet fees :)

DidoTheDodo · 11/03/2014 10:47

How is kitty this morning?

Hubblez · 11/03/2014 11:38

I just phoned CHAT and they're super busy but said she seems brighter today with the fluids but still not eating herself. I'll phone back at 5ish to check on her again and ask if she was scanned/xrayed to find the string. Good to hear she feels a little better though :)

Hubblez · 11/03/2014 11:44

Girl cat normally sits on a box in the corner of the kitchen and hides in the space behind it between cupboards, boy cat is sitting on the box poking his head behind and meowing. He normally never goes near the box :(

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 11/03/2014 11:53

Poor lad. Shall he be getting extra TLC/taste treats?

Let us know of any progress?

Hubblez · 11/03/2014 11:59

I've been playing with a cat dangly toy with him for about 2 hours while watching tv and reading mumsnet (yay multitasking!) I dunno how he isn't bored of it already, he's rolling round like crazy with it and my arm is nearly falling off. Think he has been watching the dogs too much as he keeps trying to pull it and play tug Grin

Will update with girl cats progress as I know more :)

OP posts:
DidoTheDodo · 11/03/2014 12:22

Positive thoughts for all of you. She sounds like a little toughie and hope she continues to make good progress.

Hubblez · 11/03/2014 19:33

Phoned CHAT again a bit ago and she's eating by herself!!! Grin Grin Grin they said she ate loads and drank herself and is very active. They xrayed and found a blockage in her colon, it was after this she started eating so they think she might have pooed it out with the help of the fluids. They're gonna X-ray again tomorrow and see if it's still there, if not I think we can take her home, if it is they will operate to remove it

She's gonna be better yaaay!!! I seriously thought 2 days ago that she would be put to sleep, and there doesn't seem to be anything major wrong with her so what a bad decision that would have been

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 11/03/2014 19:39

Oh I'm so pleased for you. Such a turnaround in her fortunes.

cozietoesie · 11/03/2014 19:48

It would have been the decision you had to make at the time, that's all. All power to TCN and CHAT for their help though.

Great news.

Wordsaremything · 11/03/2014 20:27

Just to say Norma is now pooing in her tray! Cleared outside of all tempting receptacles and hosed the yard and made tray as inviting as poss! All well except she seems to have a bad tummy :( just reading your other replies and think you're so very kind and reassuring!

DidoTheDodo · 11/03/2014 20:28

Brilliant news. Well done kitty. And super vets too.
