Kitten not eaten, today is the third day

Hello, I have the vets booked today for as soon as it opens for my girl cat

She's 5 months old, usually sleeps and lays around a lot but would come for cuddles and rub her head on me and purr etc and was very affectionate. The last 2 days she hasn't eaten anything and will refuse all food. She wasn't drinking either and seemed dehydrated. I gave her water in a syringe and last night she did drink a little from a water bowl and the same this morning. Today is the third day not eating.

I guess I'm writing here because I'm worried and the vet isn't open yet. She doesn't seem in pain and will let me prod and poke her and pick her up without being bothered. She did a wee but I haven't seen her poo, though she could have done one but it could have also been from boy cat.

She's just sitting on her scratching post curled up with her head down and eyes closed. Not sleeping just sitting there, she was doing the same last night. She has moved around the house as the scratching post is downstairs and litter box upstairs and I've seen her hanging around both places. I offered her tuna last night and she licked a bit of the brine stuff but didn't eat any of the tuna. Offered her different types of cat food wet and dry and all rejected. I shook the dreamies bag and she came up to me but when I offered her a dreamie she just ignored it :(

I don't know how she can have been fine a few days ago and to have changed like this with the only real symptom I can see being not eating. She's indoor only and has never been outside. I'm thinking maybe she ate something she shouldn't and it's stuck inside her? But as I said she will let me prod and poke and I would've thought if she had a blockage that would hurt her but she shows no signs of pain.

I also gave her a strong wormer (drontal) last night and 15 min after she vomited bile, no sign of worms anywhere. She vomited again this morning but I think it's because she's so hungry? It's just yellow bile. My dog does the same out of hunger if I delay feeding him for any reason

I've rambled on a bit... anyone have any suggestions or insight before it's vet time? :(

I'm thrilled to see this update. I wasn't in the clinic today so I wasn't able to find out for myself.

I'm so pleased that CHAT were able to help you and here's hoping she'll be back home with you very soon :)

Hidethechocolates · 11/03/2014 20:36

I'm so happy to hear this. :) beautiful!

Wishyouwould · 11/03/2014 20:39

Oh fab news OP soooo pleased for you!!

mumofone25 · 11/03/2014 20:57

What a relief! So pleased she's on the mend.

HarpyFishwifeTwat · 11/03/2014 23:17

So pleased for you and your little girl. Great news.

Hubblez · 12/03/2014 16:37

DP is picking her up now and bringing her home! :) they xrayed again and there is no blockage anymore and she's still eating well. She's going back on saturday for a final checkup. It was only £135 and we paid half now and will do half next month and get some cat food for CHAT from their amazon wish list :) that's less than the consultation that the emergency vet wanted, it's crazy! Sooooo happy I can't wait to see her, going to be sitting next to the door waiting for them to come home haha

Always kind of took her for granted before this happened, she's going to be spoilt when she's home!!

Thanks again everyone and especially TCN and Celia Hammond Animal Trust Thanks

Fantastic news xxx

hellymelly · 12/03/2014 16:51

I love the CHAT. They are a fantastic charity. So pleased your little cat is on the mend.

thecatneuterer · 12/03/2014 16:58

I'm so pleased. It's awful that so many animals get put down just because vet fees are so damn expensive. I wish we had the resources to help them all.

Also Hubblez, as she's now five months old has she now been neutered? If not it's time to do it (although of course give her a couple of weeks to recover from this). CHAT only charge £25 for that.

Hellymelly you're in Wales, how come you know about CHAT?

Hubblez · 12/03/2014 17:22

Not neutered yet as my vet stupidly insists girls need to be 6 months old (but not boys...) Boy cat is a month younger than girl and was booked in for last Saturday but we ended up taking girl cat instead as she was ill and so spent his neuter money on her medication and consult. I don't think he's sexually mature yet so no chance for kittens, hopefully will be ok for another 2 weeks until we have money again and can get him done.

The only time we would be able to get to CHAT again is a weekend but apparently they're not open then. They said to bring girl cat for a check up on Saturday on the phone but when DP got there they said they aren't open then so must have mixed the day up, but we can't make it any other time for a check. They gave DP medication instead for her as her intestines had been and still are a tiny bit swollen. He only managed to pick her up today as he was near there for work, but a neuter would be a drop off in the morning and pick up in evening thing? Which we wouldn't be able to do, so will book boy cat in the local vet again for in 2 weeks, and girl cat when 6 months which is when she should have recuperated from this anyway so it times it nicely :)

Will update with a pic of alive looking girl cat when she's home!

I used to live in London, and had donated to CHAT many years ago. Then I saw the thread where you rescued the little kittens from underneath a large generator thing, and donated some food through the Amazon scheme. They do so much fantastic work. Well done to you catneuterer , Celia, and all the team.

thecatneuterer · 12/03/2014 17:29

They're not officially open at the weekend but there are always vets on call and sometimes vets working catching up on neutering ferals etc. So it could be that the vet you are seeing will be there then. You'll have to phone and clarify.

That should be OK with spaying your girl then as long as she doesn't go outside before then. Cats can easily get pregnant at five months.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pic.

And since when were we able to post photos in The Litter Tray?? It's a nice surprise.

thecatneuterer · 12/03/2014 17:31

Ah hellymelly. That makes sense. We're quite well known in London and environs but I didn't think we were really known further afield.

Freshfields is a good Welsh charity by the way.

hellymelly · 12/03/2014 17:40

I hadn't heard of Freshfields, I will go and google.

Hubblez · 12/03/2014 18:57

She's home! I think I attached some pictures. She has a bit of medicine to take and is very wobbly. She tried to jump on the sofa and fell off, walked up stairs one by one, fell down all the stairs (oops) and bashed her head on the radiator when jumping on the scratch post. She had an X-ray earlier today though so do you think the anaesthetic will still be wearing off hence the wobbles? And she will have been stuck in her cat carrier all the time too

As soon as I let her out of the carrier she rubbed her head all over me and rolled on to her back for her belly rubbing :) she has a bandage on her leg and her throat shaved so looks very sorry for herself!

Boy cat is locked in the dog cage as he keeps pouncing on her and knocking her over and since she can barely walk in a straight line anyway he isn't helping! She will swap and be in dog cage tonight in the bedroom so I know she won't be falling into everything downstairs

What a wee honey.

I'd imagine she's wobbly mainly due to all she's been through and lack of food for a number of days - it's been some rollercoaster ride for her over the last week. I'd just keep her snug and peaceful for a bit.

Good luck to her.

Wordsaremything · 12/03/2014 20:22

So sorry for my random post earlier, meant for Cozie ! Anyway so so glad she's on the mend. Celia Hammond is ace!

hellymelly · 12/03/2014 22:21

I had two cats very very similar to your two. They were brothers and adored each other. I am so happy that your girl cat is alive and recovering, she looks gorgeous.

Hubblez · 13/03/2014 10:29

One more picture! She's chilling in her favourite spot. Still a bit wobbly but better, both dogs and boy cat are absolutely obsessed with her, she must smell funky. It's a nightmare trying to keep them all apart :(

I'm glad she's a bit better. She's been through an awful lot so it may take a few days yet.

Are you having to use the cage much for boycat?

Hubblez · 13/03/2014 11:43

Yes cozie but he's starting to dislike it and just meows forever, I tried letting them both be loose and supervising but he goes up to her every time trying to wrestle, I must have said no and moved him about 30 times in 10 minutes but he isn't getting the message. So he's going to have to be upset going in and out of the cage for a few days as girl cats health is more important.

I tried caging her instead but she just screams to be let out - don't blame her when she was stuck in a carry case for 3 days! And I don't want to stress her out any more than is needed so boy cat gets the short straw

OP posts:
DidoTheDodo · 13/03/2014 12:07

She's beautiful!

cozietoesie · 13/03/2014 12:43

Just stick him in then and harden your heart. If he's (wrongly) got the message that he just needs to meow a lot and then you'll let him out, he could do with being disabused of that - after all, he might need cage rest for something in the future.

I'd choose a distinctive word to use when you close the cage door - and then ignore him.

cozietoesie · 13/03/2014 13:03

Sorry - I'm slow today so it only just occurred to me. He's trying to 'wrestle' with her? There's always the possibility that it's a wee bit more than that in an incompetent sort of way. You were going to have him neutered last weekend?

Hubblez · 13/03/2014 13:18

Yes was going to be last weekend, now it's gonna have to wait til about the 22nd to get him neutered. It might be attempted humping but he sure is crap at it if it is and girl cat won't tolerate it anyway. He is just squashing her a lot too which isn't good. I haven't used a word when putting him in the cage or taken him out for meowing - except 3am this morning since the cage is in my room and I couldn't sleep :( will start adding a word to cage time
