What is your cat called?

Just being nosy really and looking for inspiration

Does the name you've chosen suit him/her because of looks/personality or is it so inappropriate as to be ironic?

Also, does anyone give their pedigree cat a ridiculous moniker (a la Crufts), then a 'normal' nickname or is that just for dogs?

My cat is Bob.

He came with the name but we were happy to keep it. He is long haired and it does kind of suit his scruffyness!

Currently two black toms called Dwalin and Spider, and a tortoiseshell queen called Fat Cat.

We lost our little black queen last year -she was called Lola.

Thanks Charlie and Ormi. I've never heard the name Dwalin before - how do you pronounce it? Love 'Bob' and 'Fat Cat'.

It's from the Hobbit (and we named it BEFORE the film came out Grin). I used to think it was pronounced Dwaylin, but in the file it was Dwahlin so I bow to their superior judgement.

Currently we have Bert and Stella. Previously we have had Betty, Claudia and Smudge. We have only named 2/5 of them. The other 3 were rescues who already had names.

We have Frazer - came with the name from the rescue place and we liked it. In retrospect, should have called him Toothless - he both looks and behaves like the dragon in 'How to tame your dragon'!

People don't give dogs ridiculous names just because you know, lol...to register a puppy with the Kennel Club it has to have a unique name within that breed - if you just put down what you actually wanted to call it there'd be loads of other Rovers or Spots or whatever, so you combine words to make something that they will allow, and then just call it what you were going to call it.

I'm pretty sure the same is true of The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy.

So yes, the breeder gives it a name and then the owner calls it something else.

I have a Bob and a Juney.

Juney was born in June...

Bob was Juney's first born and I named the kittens as they came out and then his name just stuck.

My cat's full name is "Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next" but we just call him Max most of the time Grin

Hero. She was named as a kitten by my hubby's then gf and it suits her!

My dad's cat is Teddy. He's a huge longhaired ginger and is as cuddly as a cuddly toy so the name is very apt.

tabulah are you winding me up or does The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy really exist?

Dwalin is growing on me I have to say. I like Betty, Bert Fraser and Smudge as well though, and I can totally picture Teddy the cuddly long-haired ginger.

Elsa - mostly known as Princess
Tessa/Tessie - almost always called Evil but occasionally answers to Fattie/Fatcat
Polly - mostly called Stupid or 'Get off my fucking houseplants you little shit!'

As an adult, I have only ever had nameless strays so get to name them myself. I like names that have suitable meanings or fit the rescue siutation, so currently have a Dougal (which means 'dark stranger', and he was found straying by the CPL, and is black) and a Folly (found on Folly Hill Road, eating roadkill and in terrible shape). We used to have Diggory, which means 'wanderer' - we think he arrived in the back of a house clearance van visiting a nearby auction house as no-one had any record of him being lost.

As a child, our cats were called after historical or folklore figures, and we had Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson (Horace), Emma Lady Hamilton (Emmie), Napoleon Bonaparte (Poly), Empress Josephine (Jojo), Caligula (Boots), Mephistopheles (Toffee) and Quintus Curtius Rufus (Rufus).

I'm not being disparaging btw. Just genuinely Shock that I've reached the ripe old age of 35 having absolutely no idea that pedigree cats are 'shown' just like dogs. Mumsnet is indeed a daily education.

Our daughter names most of our cats - we have:
Travis (was Toby but dh changed his name as did not like it)
Saffy
Mummy cat (she had kittens hence the name)
Treacle (tortoiseshell cat)
Twinkle (black cat)
Sausage
Marshmallow
Jasper (although she is a girl)
Kitten (poor thing never really got a proper name)
Buster sparkle
Generic (he was our third black cat and they all look the same hence generic)
Diamond jubilee
Gizmo (the fattest cat ever)
Spike (who was the size of a dog!)
Kitkat (our old dear lived to over 20)

Some are no longer with us but all remembered fondly :0)

I have had many cats, but my best name was for a great big gorgeous cream boy who had many years on the streets prior to living with me - Mr Holland he was always know by his full name.

Rofl - it does sound like a made up name to be fair though.

I know somebody that shows cats, they seem to enjoy it - I don't think mine would though, they're not exactly open to new experiences my cats.

bubbles is our short hair domestic cat and I swear he has only bubbles between his ears.!!!! but he is very loving!!
Tiger is our long hair domestic cat.

I really like Treacle and Gizmo from your list Mel and LOVE Mummy Cat and Kitten.

Mr Holland sounds like he was a very proud, dignified sort Lonecat Smile

Well exactly tabula. IME, the cats I've known don't really like to sit/lie still or erm... perform the way dogs do. That's why I never even imagined there were such things as cat shows. Still sitting here like this Shock after browsing the GCCF website.

We have a moggie called Rocky, so called because he has two extra toes on each foot, and looks like he is wearing boxing gloves!

We also have a siamese called 'Princess Mei-Mei of Siam'... Though mostly she gets called Poppy?!
