Advice on neighbours dog…neglected.

Neighbour has lived next door for 2 years. Had this dog for last 14 months.

I’m home all day and never seen him be walked or played with.

Living in outside wooden kennel which is covered in his poo and has hardly any water.

Desperate for attention when I walk by him but shaking on approach.

Thr dog warden is not interested - not her job as it’s not lost or causing a nuisance!

RSPCA say as long as he has shelter and water it’s ok.

He’s been outside all this time during all the heatwaves and winter.

I want to rescue him and give him a home and love and the life he deserves.

What can I do?

They haven’t walked him in over 12 months!

Has he not left that enclosure for 12 months?

He may have left the enclosure to go in the garden but certainly not for a while as the ivy on the ground in front of the gate hasn’t been disturbed at all.

I still haven’t heard anything from them.

Their postbox is outside the property (no letterbox on the house door ) so I can’t say if they have even seen my letter!

Do you know anyone that could knock at their door?

No, we’re quite rural and the dog can’t be seen from outside of their garden. I only managed to get the photo as he was at work and she had taken kids to nursery so I knew the house wasn’t occupied.

What about the police, the local council, environmental health if all else fails tip off the local hells angels - anything to get some action!

ilovesushi · 08/08/2026 00:04

Oh god that is heartbreaking. Can you report to the police? In our area, the police (with the RSPCA) raided a property where there were dogs and horses being mistreated. Try the RSPCA again? Are there other animal charities that could do something? The scary thing is they may get another animal and do the same thing. Please do your best for that poor dog xxx

andweallsingalong · 08/08/2026 00:12

All those people saying to liberate him, surely first vets trip they would scan for a chip and it would all go horribly wrong for OP.

MarchionessVonSausage · 08/08/2026 02:05

Placemarking for updates.

How awful OP. Well done for trying to help the poor thing. I'm in Australia so no advice but thanks to all the posters for the resources offered.

I tend to agree that 'liberating' isn't a great idea. Too risky. Illegal for one thing and of course they'll know it was you.

The RSPCA in the UK sounds the same as here. They rarely attend to abuse cases unless it's on a mass scale, like puppy farms or for example, a greyhound training facility using awful practices. And that was only after it was in the media.

Best of luck.

If the ivy hasn’t been disturbed how are they getting food and fresh water to him?

(and could that be a route to getting RSPCA involved?)

LegalEagle23 · 09/08/2026 14:41

It must be so frustrating for you@DoodleSquad. I hope they respond soon.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/08/2026 15:08

You wonder how the kids are faring if the dog is getting neglected like that. OP, sadly I thnik the wording of your note has probably got their backs up. Saying "at no cost to you" seems like you're trying to make out that you're doing them a favour when they'll see it as they've lost something that they paid money for. I would have offered them money. I mean, you ARE doing them a favour by taking it off their hands but those kinds of people who view dogs as possessions just won't see it that way at all.

SpaceAngel1999 · 09/08/2026 16:02

Might be worth contacting spaniel aid or spaniel assist. I used to volunteer for spaniel aid and they will reach out to the owner to try and get him the relinquish the dog. I have springers and they are very much people dogs, this is so sad

HoraceCope · 10/08/2026 08:17

but you say he has no water
i cant believe t he rspca wont attend.
i reported a neighbour and they attended

LegalEagle23 · 10/08/2026 19:01

The dog is in East Anglia which is the hottest part of the country poor thing!

KrazyKatty · 10/08/2026 19:45

They obviously don’t care about the poor animal. I’d ask a friend who likes dogs to help me liberate him and take him and leave them a note to say the RSPCA collected him.
I doubt they’d bother chasing it up.

LegalEagle23 · 12/08/2026 12:29

@DoodleSquad Have you had a response?

DoodleSquad · 12/08/2026 13:10

Hello all.

Sorry but there’s no update as yet. I’m sneaking round late in the evening and feeding him and filling up his water bowl.
I have to be careful not to be seen

Thanks for the update. They're not feeding him?!?

KamikazePigeon · 12/08/2026 13:14

OMG. The poor dog. The RSPCA really aren't bothered that he's not being fed and watered? What's the point of them?

deeahgwitch · 12/08/2026 17:15

Oh no @DoodleSquad
That is desperate. In this heat !!!
if only Paul O’ Grady were still alive, he’d have the RSPCA ars*s on a plate !!
Did you contact Dogs Trust and / or your local Spaniel rescue ?

LegalEagle23 · 12/08/2026 19:22

@DoodleSquad If he is being repeatedly left without water/food, that's important information to give the RSPCA and they must act upon that.

Coreiscore · 12/08/2026 20:09

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 04/08/2026 18:22

Ahh. Someone who judges everyone by a select few and cannot see reason due to their own preconceptions.

My advice was sound - just because I breed does not take away from that, as much as you might like it to 😉

No not “sound” at all and I see you ignored that fact that so many deeply damaged dogs come directly from KC registered breeders? When they’ve finished being useful, of course.
Anyway, op, RSPCA are notoriously crap in situations like this. Can you try some other local rescues? They might be able to advise/assist/give the RSPCA a shove…..

Ilovemyshed · 12/08/2026 20:15

Have you phones 101?

jeaux90 · 15/08/2026 08:37

Call RSPCA back and lie.
