Advice on neighbours dog…neglected.

DoodleSquad · 31/07/2026 22:58

Neighbour has lived next door for 2 years. Had this dog for last 14 months.

I’m home all day and never seen him be walked or played with.

Living in outside wooden kennel which is covered in his poo and has hardly any water.

Desperate for attention when I walk by him but shaking on approach.

Thr dog warden is not interested - not her job as it’s not lost or causing a nuisance!

RSPCA say as long as he has shelter and water it’s ok.

He’s been outside all this time during all the heatwaves and winter.

I want to rescue him and give him a home and love and the life he deserves.

What can I do?

What a shame so many of you are saying RSPCA are sh*t 🥲
I don’t live in the UK but I think you have Dogs Trust there.
Would / Could they be of assistance?

bitmiffed26 · 04/08/2026 12:05

OP, if you end up with this dog can you please do an Amazon wish list? I’d love to buy her/him some well deserved treats

spiderlight · 04/08/2026 12:28

Please, please, please let them respond positively to the letter and let you take the dog. He looks so much like my rescue girl and my heart is breaking for him.

Branleuse · 04/08/2026 12:38

I'd offer to buy the dog off him or ask if I could take it for walks sometimes.
You'll get nowhere with the RSPCA. They don't care. Dogs are property and can be legally neglected in practically every way as long as they have basic shelter and food and water.

I'd just try and be nice to the dog and see it I could get the owner to let me help with the dog. Damage limitation etc.

whippersnapper55 · 04/08/2026 12:41

I hope you get a reasonable reply from your neighbours. It's cruel and neglectful to leave a dog outside like that, especially in this heat. I know it's illegal but I'd be tempted to cut the fence and take the poor dog to a rescue, even if it means risking prosecution!

FlorenceLawrence · 04/08/2026 12:46

Yes offer to buy him.
Or steal him.
Poor little thing - he deserves love and cuddles and walks and a comfy sofa x
Heartbreaking that people treat animals like this

DoodleSquad · 04/08/2026 13:30

I won’t be stealing the dog or going in with bolt cutters.
I have written a note to the owners saying we would be willing to take the dog in at no cost to them - everything would be covered by us.

I can do nothing more until I get a response or abuse!

Depending on the response from the letter...

I would make an anonymous post on a local facebook group/dog walking group and let others know including the address. Ideally private groups.

If the owners get pressure from multiple people turning up at the door it might be more likely to help. Similarly you could suggest everyone complains to the same place.

Appreciate that it will likely be obvious it was you after the letter so depends if you can deal with that.

DefiantRabbit9 · 04/08/2026 13:54

Poor sweetheart! Have you spoken to local charities or other animal charities like dogs trust? Do they concur with RSPCA?

Me personally I'd offer to buy the dog.

Cuppachuchu · 04/08/2026 14:46

Here to see the outcome for this poor little dog. I wouldn't be able to ignore either, OP.
Fingers crossed for you. 🤞

Gardenisablooming · 04/08/2026 14:50

Actually i hope he does get abusive..then you can call the police.

He can explain to them his actions..I feel quite sick after seeing the photo.
I'd be sharing that pic on local neighbourhood sm.

Maybe a few eggs at his window may see change.

Oh god his little face. I don’t understand how anyone can neglect animals. I hope your neighbour lets you take him.

Snoken · 04/08/2026 15:44

This was absolutely heart breaking. I really hope you will have a positive response OP. It's completely pointless for them to have a dog, unless they get some sick, twisted pleasure from abusing animals.

Hellohah · 04/08/2026 17:44

Oh, I really hope there is a positive outcome to this OP. You really are doing everything you can 👍🏻

Absolutely appalling that it's deemed acceptable for dogs to live like this.

Coreiscore · 04/08/2026 17:47

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 04/08/2026 11:41

Whilst I agree it's an absolutely appalling situation, but other than the risking OP being prosecuted (as others have noted if she does just 'liberate' [steal] the dog) there's also the very high chance that this dog has a string of behavioural issues - some of which could manifest in reactivity/aggression to humans. Just simply going along and releasing it from the cage is a terrible idea. There's nothing to say the dog won't run away or lunge at OP if she tries to touch it or even worse. If it's never walked then chances are it's in a significant amount of pain from it's joints - which likely will manifest in aggression (based on experience).

It's utterly disgraceful a dog can be allowed to live in such conditions, and indeed there's a doodle farm near me that has dogs in very similar conditions, but for the reasons listed above all anyone should ever do is raise through the appropriate channels. These charities/relevant contacts are better equipped, better financed and better resourced than most people the street to handle cases of animal neglect.

And from the perspective of the owners, having received OP's letter...do we really think if the dog goes missing they won't put two and two together? Plus they already don't have a particularly good relationship.

OP has two choices: offer to buy the dog (people like this never turn down money, although chances are they'll just get another dog - this sort always do, so it's not actually solving the bigger issue), or continue reporting through appropriate channels.

Are you a breeder perchance?
My experience of rescues, even from the most appalling situations, is the exact opposite to yours.

20+ years rescuing, and breeding. One does not exclude the other. What a narrow world view.

I have seen dogs in incredibly similar conditions and how they react, dozens if not hundreds of times. A stranger going in and releasing a dog that has only ever known captivity and a cage is reckless and foolish. Let the professionals handle it.

So yes, a breeder. Thought as much. Generally, people involved in the world of rescue are not breeders, one very much does exclude the other, in my experience. I have been heavily involved in rescue for decades and the vast majority of dogs are not as you describe.
In fact, the most damaged dogs I’ve come across in rescue have come from….you guessed it, KC registered breeders.

Florally · 04/08/2026 18:21

OP this is heartbreaking- I really hope they respond to you

Ahh. Someone who judges everyone by a select few and cannot see reason due to their own preconceptions.

My advice was sound - just because I breed does not take away from that, as much as you might like it to 😉

emmadoher · 04/08/2026 18:40

I would lie to RSPCA and say that you’ve often seen him with no water and you’ve had to give him it yourself. Fuck it! If it helps save the dog 🤷🏼‍♀️

DoodleSquad · 04/08/2026 18:55

Just a short update- I’ve had no response as yet 🙁

Even if they don’t respond hopefully will give them the kick up the arse they need

Ihateboris · 04/08/2026 19:32

Oh my God...only just seen this thread. My heart is literally breaking for this poor little innocent soul. How can people be so cruel. My blood is boiling. I'd be banging on the door and doing everything I could to save that poor dog.

Yes, I'm afraid I'd do the same.

Nincompoo · 04/08/2026 19:35

Just take him. You can guarantee he’s not chipped. How would they prove it?
