We have a Wire Haired Fox Terrier, so im used to "you dont see many of them, my gran had one, I had one in wheels", but today we saw a Sealyham- iv seen them in books and in Crufts but never in the flesh. We also regularly see a pair of Pharoah Hounds(gorgeous but mental) who blush when they get excited. Again never seen one in real life before they arrived.
Whats the most unusual/most uncommon dog you've seen out and about?

My own dog. He's a Kerry Blue Terrier 💙. On the list of vulnerable native breed of UK and Ireland with about a hundred puppies each year. I adore him but they are not a dog for the faint hearted. He is the cleverest and definitely the most vocal dog I've ever met. He back chats and grumbles about everything and you can see him weigh up if something is worth doing
Most people think he is either a black schnauzer or a poodle mix. Very rare someone knows what he is and I've only ever met one other one in real life when I did an assessment for a dog rehoming charity.

We have a curly coated retriever and are always stopped. Once on holiday someone stopped so abruptly in their car they caused the person behind to emergency stop. 😬

I see a Welsh Springer Spaniel regularly. I also saw 2 elderly Afghan Hounds a few weeks ago. Such graceful dogs.

I’m amazed at how you all recognise these breeds.

Last year I saw a man with a Doberman I think red and rust and it looked just like one which had won a section (?) in Crufts that year. My grandad as a child in Germany owned a Doberman called Lord.

A Basset Fauve de Bretagne
Beautiful dog. I have such a soft spot for hounds

We used to have an Afghan as a family (as a child), tiger brindle called Kafka.

I saw a Chesapeake Bay Retriever once in the Cotswolds, soon after I learned about them. (I asked so that’s how I know). I rarely see American cockers in the UK - probably just once.

Ruthietuthie · 20/05/2026 21:56

A friend of mine has two Ibizan hounds. Another has two Borzois. All very elegant dogs.
I sometimes see someone walking three Clumber Spaniels, who are just gorgeous.

Ruthietuthie · 20/05/2026 22:00

Just remembered one more.
A family down the street have an Irish Wolfhound. He is about a year old, already 160 lbs, and apparently his father was 190.
The family are all very short and, while the dog is very gentle, it drags them down the street if it decides it wants to.
It is honestly the size of a small horse.

Boxingshibes · 20/05/2026 22:03

We have Shiba inus, there is also a basenji, and an Afghan in our village.

Captivatingcapybara · 20/05/2026 22:05

I have a Japanese Spitz, not sure if unusual enough though.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 20/05/2026 22:07

I saw a “lassie” type dog in the pub recently and I couldn’t remember seeing one ever except on tv.

Scissor · 20/05/2026 22:09

Met a very lovely Westie last week. Was so unusual to see one.

My mother's first dog, bit my father as prospective romance intro. She should have listened to the dog.

quiteinterested · 20/05/2026 22:13

I've met three Welsh Terriers in the last two weeks. Lovely dogs.

Icannotremembermyusername · 20/05/2026 22:13

i see two Bedlingtons (both have French names interestingly but belong to different owners), an otter hound, duck toller, a stunning grey Great Dane with eyes like a Weimaraner- show stopping. Spinone, a Finnish Lapphund ( very grumpy) and a Swedish white elkhound (another grumpy girl 🤣🤣) me - I have a good old lab 😝

Objectrelations · 20/05/2026 22:14

I have seen a Chinese crested dog which are hairless last year at home in Jersey

SybilEsmeGytha · 20/05/2026 22:18

I have a soft spot for breeds that might appear intimidating to some. Obviously I always ask the owner's permission before approaching! The rarest three I've met are a Preso Canero mastiff, a Boerbel and a Thai Ridgeback. The Thai Ridgeback had beautiful blue coat and very people orientated staffylike temperament despite her scary appearance.

This thread has been delightful and has me dreaming of owning a pack of rare hounds in my retirement 🤣

Sgtmajormummy · 20/05/2026 22:19

My dog groomer has two Chinese Crested dogs and they’re styled to the max like manga characters.
At the dog park there’s an Afghan hound, a completely brown Dobermann and an Irish Wheaten terrier.
My p/s mini Schnauzer has yet to meet a female of his colour and size.

BooneyBeautiful · 20/05/2026 22:23

Two I have come across recently are a North American Mastiff and an Afghan Hound.

analoguedreams · 20/05/2026 22:24

I have two Finnish lapphunds - they’re big floofy and lovable. Like foxes crossed with bears and huskies.

I’d love a Swiss shepherd - they’re beautiful

Lotsofsnacks · 20/05/2026 22:26

There’s a Manchester terrier round here,
its quite a shy little dog. Although the breeds aren’t related, as they are Black and Tan they look like a smaller, slimmer Doberman

MissTFied · 20/05/2026 22:34

Two coton de tulears, brothers. Such sweet little things, very scared of people but love my dogs. I'd never heard of them before.

IPoopRainblows · 20/05/2026 22:34

We live right by a very popular dog walking area, every few weeks a group of large dog owners meet to walk their dogs, on lead, across the fields. There’s two Irish Wolfhounds, a Great Dane, Irish Red Setters and the maddest most bonkers Dalmatian who once broke free, ran in our front door and started humping the laundry basket.

IPoopRainblows · 20/05/2026 22:39

Forgot to add most unusual dog I’ve come across and had never previously heard of, is a Tamaskan, beautiful dog that has the most mesmerising howl like a singing wolf.

MsJinks · 20/05/2026 22:40

I grew up with Norwegian Buhunds as my parents bred, showed, judged them. I’ve never seen one in the wild though there must be some somewhere!
