We have a Wire Haired Fox Terrier, so im used to "you dont see many of them, my gran had one, I had one in wheels", but today we saw a Sealyham- iv seen them in books and in Crufts but never in the flesh. We also regularly see a pair of Pharoah Hounds(gorgeous but mental) who blush when they get excited. Again never seen one in real life before they arrived.
Whats the most unusual/most uncommon dog you've seen out and about?

I saw an Afghan a few weeks ago. Saw a Hungarian Pulli too, same spot!

Was it grey? I don’t know the shades but my mum’s was grey and colour was Tiger brindle.

It was simply beautiful - lots of shades of greys, browns. I spoke to the owner who agreed you don't see many these days.

I saw a Spinone today, the owner was surprised I knew what it was.

I met a Spanish Water Dog a couple of days ago. He had webbed feet but his owners said he flatly refuses to swim.

I used to have 2 SWDs - I agree with this! They loved muddy puddles, or mud in general, but weren’t keen on anything more serious and hated rain. Lovely dogs though.

At my local park, a man brings three corgis for a walk. They are the only corgis I ever see. My mum loved a corgi and we had two growing up. My DSister is called Susan and she swears she was named after the Queen’s corgi. 😂

I’ve got Cardigan corgis a rare native breed, the Queen has Pembroke's which in the grand scheme of things are more common.
Nearly everyone stops me and asked me what they are speculating on some weird cross, it drives a couple of my friends insane. We sat outside a coffee shop once and every 2-3 minutes we were interrupted by passers by asking about them my friend got really cross in the end!

There are several corgis near me. And years ago there was a Swedish Valhund on our rec - the owner was always most offended when people thought she was a corgi!

The corgis you see are most likely to be Pembrokes, I’ve owned Cardigans for over 20 years travelled extensively and have only ever seen 3 away from breeders etc and 1 of those was in France. Most people have no idea that there are 2 different types of corgi.

Silverbirchleaf · 22/05/2026 05:53

I see a gorgeous petit Bassett grindon Bassett vendee, which I admit, I thought was a long hair dashund when he was a puppy. Lovely little dog.

Have a Dalmatian down our street - does that count?

Aldo occasionally see an English terrier and an Australian terrier

(Now to spend a happy few minutes looking up all the lesser known breed types)

The person I know who has a Cardigan corgi says people often think it’s a mini or dwarf sheepdog…..because it’s black and white 😁

I get the same comments. “Is that a mini sheepdog?” Is that a sheepdog crossed with a jack russel?” I’ve always had black and white ones with blond or brown edges although there are 6 colours listed by the KC as acceptable including merle.

Met a very lovely Westie last week. Was so unusual to see one.

My mother's first dog, bit my father as prospective romance intro. She should have listened to the dog.

I have a cairn terrier, several times I’ve been asked if he is a coloured Westie( he is a red brindle!)

They’re not the easiest breeds to own apparently but they are lovely. Very loyal and good with children. Mine also slept with our family cat and was friends with him, cat was got as a kitten after the dog. Used to come on walks, the cat.

I’ve got friends with deerhounds, and another friend with an otterhound - both are the sweetest dogs. Incredibly soulful eyes, and tremendous sort of calm presence, as if they’re hundreds of years old and have seen it all before.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 22/05/2026 12:57

I have two Irish terriers and a jack Russell. I’m so used to people stopping me to ask about the ITs I have all the answers on the tip of my tongue. Then someone stopped me to ask what breed my Jack Russell is and I was so confused I probably came across a bit rude.

There’s a Manchester terrier round here,
its quite a shy little dog. Although the breeds aren’t related, as they are Black and Tan they look like a smaller, slimmer Doberman

I've got an English Toy Terrier (Toy Manchester Terrier in the US) and I hear "is it a mini dobermann" at least once a day.

In my area, there are 3 Griffons Bruxellois and 3 long haired frenchies. Quite...weird.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 23/05/2026 15:53

Locally people seem to have lots of breeds that you wouldn't usually see that often
Selyham terriers
Skye terriers
Gordon setters
Otterhounds
Loads of Bedlingtons
About 10 bearded collies in my town
Several pharaoh hounds
The list goes on

I've got a cardigan corgi who is regularly believed to be a husky corgi mix
And a cardigan corgi cross border collie who most people think is a Pembroke

I never seem to see cavalier king Charles spaniels any more

I saw three Afghan hounds the other beautiful but too much upkeep for me

Cardi Corgis are the best Corgis.

YvieYfronts · 25/05/2026 13:49

We're urban (London burbs) and we have a couple of beautiful Irish setters living very nearby, a little further afield there are 2 Corgi pups and a pair of grown up old English sheepdogs.

Our boy is a Smooth Collie (Lassie without the Pat Sharp hair) and only one person has ever said, "OMG that's a Smooth Collie!", everyone else assumes he is cross breed. There were only 54 registered in the UK last year so very few and far between.

My mum loved her Afghan and lived with him for a year in the countryside. She then lived all over London with him including Wimbledon. I don’t actually recall him being brushed a lot but my auntie (longer half sister of my mum) recalls brushing him. They need a lot of exercise though and as I previously said they can clear very high fences and walls and do do that. They’re also hunting dogs. It’s a misconception they’re stupid too, he wasn’t. Stubborn yes, but he could sit, lie down, be recalled in parks. I mean the show ones, you have to train them to get them to walk in dog shows. My mum’s Afghan had a famous grandfather (Shirkan of Grandeur) who won American dog shows up to a good age.

Just spotted a Russian black terrier, beautiful dog.

There is a woman who walks past our house with 1, i didn't know what the breed was till I googled a pp talking about them, they are huge but seem to just plod along.

Kadiofakit · 28/05/2026 12:01

We have an Irish Terrier so I also get the 'don't see many around' comments. In our local park we also have two griffon dogs, they are so cute and also a miniature pincher, which you don't see that often.

My one regularly meets an Irish Wolfhound at another walking spot. My one usually does not like much larger dogs but seems to feel a bit of a kinship with a fellow irish as he really doesn't mind her at all 😀

weegierama · 28/05/2026 16:21

I have got a black and tan Coonhound

Get stopped constantly and asked if he's a basset cross or some sort of mutant Rottweiler 😂

StormGazing · 28/05/2026 16:34

We have a Samoyed, they’re such gorgeous dogs, so friendly, selective in their choice of which commands to follow but adorable, we get stopped all the time! When she was a puppy about 4 years ago my friend and I were walking her and we saw the most enormous black dog, beautiful (except the clipped ears 😭😭), it was being walked by a tiny woman who could in no way control this hound that looked like it guarded the gates of hell! Turned out it was a cane corso, I’d never heard of these dogs at that point. He was beautiful, but I’d never have one … I’ll stick to my fairy chasing loopy Samoyed lol
