We have a Wire Haired Fox Terrier, so im used to "you dont see many of them, my gran had one, I had one in wheels", but today we saw a Sealyham- iv seen them in books and in Crufts but never in the flesh. We also regularly see a pair of Pharoah Hounds(gorgeous but mental) who blush when they get excited. Again never seen one in real life before they arrived.
Whats the most unusual/most uncommon dog you've seen out and about?

I saw a Dandie Dinmont Terrier the other day!

Beanosaurus · 20/05/2026 22:41

I have a soft coated wheaten terrier, she's the sweetest, most loving dog I've ever had

I wonder if you live near me.

Sixtonskip · 20/05/2026 22:50

I met a bloodhound a few weeks ago, he was gorgeous, never seen one before in real life. Often see a group of 3 Manchester terriers walking near me but have never met any others.

Ladybird69 · 20/05/2026 22:56

This thread has brought up a childhood memory. My neighbours had a gorgeous red setter who would take himself out for a walk. He knew and kept to the same circuit and crossed roads and then came straight home. We knew what time it was if we saw him walking past the house same time every day.

DogAnxiety · 20/05/2026 23:02

There are some less common (not that rare tho) dogs on my normal walks -

my absolute favourite and definitely my next dog after my (very common but lovely) current dog: wheaten terrier. Gorgeous.

the long-haired vizslas which are very badly behaved (!) and which we always avoid as their owners are very “our babybeeeez would never hurt a fly” sorts.

a couple of Swedish vallhunds, barky and I just don’t see what their endearing qualities are.

an old English sheepdog with a sensible haircut but a little bit of an attitude - very vocal and barky at other dogs/strangers. His siblings/ offspring are ok though.

unfortunately there are also a fair few poorly socialised malinois who we also do a loop around. Are they like the new status dogs or something??

Notmenc · 20/05/2026 23:06

We had Old English Sheepdogs when I was a child. One of our dogs was a retired Dulux dog 💙I very rarely see this breed now.

Wooflysniff · 20/05/2026 23:07

Sheltie, Old English sheepdog, English Setter and a New England Duck Tolling Retriever. They're the ones I can remember at the moment. I'm enjoying Googling all of the breeds I've never heard of before.

Met a very lovely Westie last week. Was so unusual to see one.

My mother's first dog, bit my father as prospective romance intro. She should have listened to the dog.

I had a Westie in the 80s ,huge problem with eczema! He also didn’t take to my husband and they had the same name 😅

KojaksLollipop · 20/05/2026 23:10

I’ve always had Scottie’s, I wouldn’t say they’re massively unusual but I rarely see any others. They’re a lovely breed and with those big brown eyes, so beautiful.

springhasspringed · 21/05/2026 00:56

I saw a saluki today, so pretty.

There are so many cockerpoos etc around, lots of dachshunds and chihuahuas too. I regularly see a pair of corgis, an Irish wolfhound, several cavalier king Charles spaniels. I had a cavalier and she was absolutely gorgeous.

We live right by a very popular dog walking area, every few weeks a group of large dog owners meet to walk their dogs, on lead, across the fields. There’s two Irish Wolfhounds, a Great Dane, Irish Red Setters and the maddest most bonkers Dalmatian who once broke free, ran in our front door and started humping the laundry basket.

My mum used to have a rescue dalmation that humped everything in sight!

HorribleHisTories15 · 21/05/2026 02:06

@NorwichMomour dog is part Norwich terrier! But people never seem to know what one is. He is part Norwich and part Parson russell terrier. True, full breed Norwich’s are on an endangered dog breed list. Ours was a rescue dog; and we can’t think why he was given up, apart from the fact that he barks at big cars.

edit: spelling

We have a foster saluki at the moment , people seem to stop her a lot because she has long flowing blonde ears !
where I live it’s semi rural so we get a real mix of the cocka types , border collies , patterdale/ patty crosses and so many labs !
saw a huge Irish wolfhound last week , what a majestic boy he was too

I have a Japanese Spitz, not sure if unusual enough though.

i too have a japanese spitz

canuckup · 21/05/2026 03:37

Loads of Australian shepherds near us

Always different coloured eyes and wild variety of colours

They seem like great dogs.

We have a short haired saluki cross who looks a bit like a fawn. We call her goth dog sometimes, as she looks like she is wearing eyeliner. People stop us all the time to say how pretty she is...

Netaporter · 21/05/2026 04:08

I’ve got a Leonberger (so quite unusual), but we used to see a Komondor on our morning walk. It was unusually large (almost the same size as my male Leo who is 75kgs) and at the time, adolescent and uncontrollable. I often think about the owner who unsurprisingly always looked exhausted walking it…

On the same walk we’d see a spinone, a basset hound, a Great Dane and an old english sheepdog.

Confusedmermaid1 · 21/05/2026 04:33

There’s someone local who walks a samoyed and a Japanese spitz and they look like exact copies except one shrank in the wash 😅 the samoyed is particularly impressive.
We also saw a spinone at a food festival recently, he was lovely.
I absolutely love a leonburger, there’s one local-ish that I see when I’m walking my dog but not very often.
I drive past a huuuge St Bernard on my way to work. I’ve always wanted to know if he is crossed with anything because he seems massive compared to others I’ve seen…
I always get asked about mine, people often say shiba even though the curly tail and pointy ears are the only similarities. He’s a pomsky (Pomeranian x husky that we adopted before the judgement comes 😅) so is much fluffier than a shiba. There are 2 shibas locally though.
My dream dog is a Bernese but we don’t have the space and I can’t deal with the shedding from my small dog, never mind one that size!

muddyford · 21/05/2026 06:17

Red and white setter
Two gorgeous Clumber spaniels
Gordon setter
German wire-haired pointer
Welsh springer spaniel

I have a Brittany (Breton) Spaniel - also a Brittany mix - both rescues. Amazing nature and I'd definately have another - we didn't intentionally go for the breed - just sort of happened :)

The Brittany's are so pretty they have an "air" about them.

I have seen a Chinese crested dog which are hairless last year at home in Jersey

I used to have one- the hairy version! Lovely dogs, highly underrated.

I’ve seen a few Sealyhams over the years, but very uncommon. (I’ve had WFTs). I’ve only seen one gigantic and very bouncy Russian Black Terrier, its owner looking totally overwhelmed.
Can’t think when I last saw an Afghan Hound, and rarely see a Borzoi.

I saw an Afghan a few weeks ago. Saw a Hungarian Pulli too, same spot!

My dog groomer has two Chinese Crested dogs and they’re styled to the max like manga characters.
At the dog park there’s an Afghan hound, a completely brown Dobermann and an Irish Wheaten terrier.
My p/s mini Schnauzer has yet to meet a female of his colour and size.

Afghan hounds are lovely but on a previous thread and according to my family (my mum had one) they’re good escape artists and can clear (jump) high fences and walls. Also apparently very hard to train. Look gorgeous though. My mum’s one would be out with my nana off the lead in the street (god knows why he was off the lead!) and would then run to the end of the road, peek back round the corner at who was following him then run off again.
