We have a Wire Haired Fox Terrier, so im used to "you dont see many of them, my gran had one, I had one in wheels", but today we saw a Sealyham- iv seen them in books and in Crufts but never in the flesh. We also regularly see a pair of Pharoah Hounds(gorgeous but mental) who blush when they get excited. Again never seen one in real life before they arrived.
Whats the most unusual/most uncommon dog you've seen out and about?

A bloke near us has 7 rough collies, he always walks them together. They're so well behaved

Lomonald · 20/05/2026 15:34

My neighbour fosters large breed dogs, they recently had a Leonberger, it was stunning and would just plod the dog was elderly and stayed with the neighbours till it was "time to go". I had only seen them on Crufts,

Not so much an unknown but my sister has a Saint Bernard. Whenever she is out she gets stopped a lot as they’re really not the type of dog you see everyday

We also have friends with a Northern Inuit but I think most people assume it’s a husky cross of some sort.

Red setters - a local family have two of them and they are the most glorious dogs. Shiny, bouncy, friendly, a bit dopey.. but somehow just so regal!

I've got a Red Setter cross and regal is just the perfect word to describe him 😂

Iheartmysmart · 20/05/2026 16:30

I see these breeds near me most weeks - a Bedlington, a Belgian sheepdog which always looks like it’s walking on tiptoes, an Airedale, a couple of Corgis and a Bassett Hound.

Nice to see something other than working cockers and cockerpoos!

One of my dogs best doggy pals is a giant schnauzer. Shes gorgeous and very playful and energetic but she’s very naughty. She does not listen to her poor owner at all. I believe they are known for being ‘independent’ and she
sure is.

Gizlotsmum · 20/05/2026 18:30

I have a red setter ( she is a proper princess) and an English setter who is normally called a spaniel. I am always impressed when people
recognise him as a setter ( it’s usually because they had one growing up). English setters are a KC vulnerable native breed, he is large but as soft as they come! Will slobber you to death or bowL you over with an enthusiastic cuddle.

I regularly see a Pyrranean Mountain Dog. It's absolutely huge, makes my Bernese Mountain dog look tiny in comparison. A lot of people ask me if mine is a Pyrranean - considering how rare they are, it seems to be a popular breed.

I have met a couple of Bernadoodles - look like bernese gone wrong and very high energy.

JaneIves · 20/05/2026 18:41

Someone local to me has a Lagotto Romagnolo, gorgeous dog! The breed was on my wish list but I got a border terrier instead!
She was quite surprised when I asked her if it was a lagotto, most people think the dog is an ubiquitous Poo cross.

ShrimpBoil · 20/05/2026 18:45

We had a Dutch Smoushond, adopted in France when PIL lived there. He was the best dog ever, very intelligent.

Quite a few near us or out on various local walks that we see semi regularly
Bedlington terriers (6 owned by one family who show them)
3 Leonbergers owned by one couple (!)
Chow chow
St Bernard
Mioritic shepherd
Patterdale terrier (tbf I'm not sure if these are so unusual?)
Corgi
American Akita (seen quite a few Japanese Akitas over the years including 4 owned by friends, but never an American one)
Irish setter
Nepalese mountain dog

That's funny because where I live there are lots of American Akitas. I have one too! I rarely come across Japanese ones, although I did meet a couple of absolutely stunning ones at the local country park! They were brindle and so majestic! Honestly, was a tad jealous 😆.

I have a Brittany (Breton) Spaniel - also a Brittany mix - both rescues. Amazing nature and I'd definately have another - we didn't intentionally go for the breed - just sort of happened :)

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2026 19:26

Love hearing all these breeds. We meet all sorts on our walks. A Bassett. Red setters. A Gordon Setter. Dalmatian. Whippets. Beagles. Brussels Griffons.

muddyford · 20/05/2026 21:16

Red and white setter
Two gorgeous Clumber spaniels
Gordon setter
German wire-haired pointer
Welsh springer spaniel

Boudy · 20/05/2026 21:21

Irish Terrier..they are fab..Not many around. We have 2!

Leonberger · 20/05/2026 21:22

Loving all the Leo spotting 😄 I can’t do a single walk without being stopped especially with more than one.

Theres a borzoi near me that is beautiful! I love seeing anything that’s a little bit different.

CombatBarbie · 20/05/2026 21:23

Where I worked, red setters (well we had a trio 2 x red and 1 x black) and dalmatians!!! We had 2 come regularly, but ive never seen any in real life

Boudy · 20/05/2026 21:24

Irish Wolfhound not far from us...lovely dog

HangryBrickShark · 20/05/2026 21:32

Saw a fox like dog called a Basenji on holiday in the Isle of Wight.

We tend to see rather a lot of beagles by us too. We have one so spot them with some interest. They are more of the working beagle sort than the American beagle which I am not so keen on.

I often walk my friends Portuguese Water dog with my Goldie and most people assume he’s a big Cockapoo.
But the most unusual dog I’ve met recently is a Russian Terrier. Absolutely gorgeous dog and she very much wanted to play with my Goldie, she was only young but she dwarfed him!

I met a chap out with two Tibetan Spaniels. Never seen those before: I thought they were overgrown Pekinese, and it's many many years since I encountered a Peke in real life. About 55 years; they really went out of fashion.

Oh that's just brought back a lovely childhood memory! My great aunty (died many years ago) had a Tibetan spaniel 🥰

tiramisugelato · 20/05/2026 14:12

I used to walk a Sarloos Wolfdog - she was stunning and got a LOT of attention.

It’s half fricking wolf!

Scrunchcake · 20/05/2026 21:40

We have a flat-coated retriever - only very occasionally see others around and people often ask what he is. He is handsome snd ridiculous.

Cartmella · 20/05/2026 21:41

I meet a Welsh terrier in the park near me. Love him.

jojojoeyjojo · 20/05/2026 21:43

I dog-sit a Dutch Stabyhoun and according to Google: The Stabyhoun, or Stabijhoun or Stabij, is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. She is a lovely dog ..very placid and calm and very lazy so gets on well with my equally lazy lurcher!
