Thought I would start another thread for all those puppy owners.

@Riverlee
@Unluckycat1
@Sunflowers765
@BigBundleOfFluff
@Cocopuff

Will have to look back to tag others as cannot remember all names.

@Riverlee . It's great. I got the idea off here! I cut the T-shirt into strips and randomly tie them for extra ragdolling capability!!

WhippyLongStocking · 06/08/2023 17:34

Thanks @BigBundleOfFluff will have a look. Sounds great

@spidershavetoomanyknees you have my sympathy. A fully grown but clearly young, friendly lab off lab hurtled at full pelt towards my whippet who was on the lead. Whippy did a little single bark. I got a dirty look from lab owner and then lab circled around to run at whippet again. I stood in the way and said, “She’s a new rescue and very nervous.” He did look a bit sheepish.

we went to puppy socialisation class last week and the trainer told us that our dogs need to learn to wait for permission to greet other dogs and then be polite when they do, have good dog manners, as the dogs they bounce on could be anxious or aggressive.

With my previous reactive rescue, people would shout, “Don’t worry! My dog’s friendly.” I would shout back, “Mine isn’t.”

hennipenni · 06/08/2023 17:46

Hennipup is coming up to 5 months old, toilet training going well (unless DH is looking after her, it seems I didn’t give him her command word-she’s more dog and I do 95% of her looking after)
teething very badly but surely can’t be going on for much longer now.
On lead walking getting much better, she can actually walk with all 4 feet on the floor!
Ring craft training going well and she should have her first show at the end of September.
Other picture is my old boy, looking very pretty!

@hennipenni Whats ringcraft training?

A couple of people have mentioned Mantrailing. Looked it up and found two people who do ir with 15 miles of me, so have messaged them.

AnnieSnap · 06/08/2023 18:33

@spidershavetoomanyknees you’re doing the right thing by taking yourself away to recharge. I do that too. Though in my case, it’s for manic ‘play’ biting that pierces the skin and really hurts. I was just reminding my ‘too chilled’ husband in a walk the other day, that we need to put our dogs on their leads when approaching (they don’t run off to people) someone who has their dog/s on a lead because although ours are friendly, the other owner may have an issue.

I recommend time away with a book and/or a bath.

tizwozliz · 06/08/2023 19:34

@Riverlee - we do mantrailing with both our pups. It took me a while to warm up to it, I think partly because early on I didn't really believe our pup wasn't just finding the trail layer by chance!

Grace has already done a few sessions, all very short and simple at the moment. She was so excited to find people holding pots of food!

I say we, I don't do the trailing, I'm just the occasional missing person.

Britintheusa · 07/08/2023 18:13

@WhippyLongStocking I laughed at the "choice words" comment!! Sooo many of those since pup arrived😂

Britpup is definitely calming down at almost 5 months (and she's pretty chill to begin with) so anyone deep in the puppy trenches has my love!!

Good luck @spidershavetoomanyknees you are amazing for giving your dog a new chance at love and a home. We're here for the times you just need to rant or brag about an achievement!

WhippyLongStocking · 07/08/2023 18:25

@spidershavetoomanyknees hope you’ve had a better couple of days. It’s horrible seeing them anxious and trying to work out what to for the best.

I keep thinking of the rescue dog 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months thing. It’s definitely worth looking at if you’ve not read it.

I keep thinking we’ve got there then something triggers her. This morning DD was not here for morning cuddles (gone back to uni), I was in shower, DH popped out without putting pup in crate or even in kitchen which led to dog pacing and anxious pooing in hall 🤦‍♀️

last night (night 16) was first night since night 1 that she settled with no fuss in crate.

so definitely two steps forward and one or sometimes 2 back 🤯

(in case anyone missed it, she’s just turned 10 months and has been here 2 weeks).

spidershavetoomanyknees · 08/08/2023 09:34

@Chihowhow if she likes ripping things does she like rope toys? They don’t shred so easily. We have a “tennis ball on a rope” toy for rescue boy and he likes to play “whack it across the floor in a circular motion” or even “flick it back and forth against his sides” is another favourite. To me it looks like a similar bitey-pully motion to the shredding, so maybe that would help

spidershavetoomanyknees · 08/08/2023 09:35

Day four update: His nervous tum seems to have settled – normal sort of toileting this morning (bit smelly, but an actual shape rather than just a very unhealthy looking splat…). We took away the “hump bedding” for washing and he was happy to settle with a chew bone instead on a fleecey blanket. He’s been good at night too – the first night we left him downstairs he barked a little (like 10 minutes?) and then last night not a peep. He’s a pretty happy lad all in all. We also moved to watering down his food and putting it in a slow feeder – he’s had no more trouble with eating or keeping it down, so that’s good. We’ve done more loose lead walking near us (haven’t been back to the park yet!) and he’s now relaxed enough he’ll go chase after a ball in the garden, as well as get engaged with his snuffle mat too.

Emotionally I’m all over the place, but there are more good moments now which is good. Doesn’t help that I seem to be having an allergic reaction to him which hasn’t gone down with antihistamines (if anything I felt worse??) so I’m trying a different type today and hoping it all settles down soon. Loving reading everyone's updates, makes me feel a bit more sane

Joining the chat. I'm on day 4 with StarPuppy. He's a real sweetie but biting and chewing everything!
Nights are going ok. He sleeps in his crate with me on an airbed next to him. He's managing 10.30pm until 5.20am ish and then going back to bed for a little longer until breakfast at 7.30am.
Toilet training is exhausting me. Taking him out every half an hour or so is sooo often! I'm hoping that he's starting to get the hang of it and I'm starting to recognise the signs. Obligatory photo.Smile

@startwig1982 How old is he ? He's absolutely gorgeous.

startwig1982 · 09/08/2023 22:20

He's 12 weeks 🥰

Cocopuff · 10/08/2023 07:52

Welcome new joiners and your beautiful pups - hope all is settling down in your houses and pups are finding their places.
@Chihowhow if your pup likes chewing and tearing up things, I’ve had old cardboard packaging recommended to me for enrichment (and saving the toys) chuck some treats in an egg carton and let them chew their way to it or empty cardboard rolls and pinch ends shut. Cocopup is not a voracious chewer but she is partial to a few treats wrapped up in tissue paper in a cardboard tube - sometimes I make up a cardboard box of them to keep her busy for a bit.

Cocopup stayed with MIL for a couple of weeks while we were on holiday and was good as gold - MIL took her on 3 walks a day (as opposed to her usual one or two) and she ate well. 4 days back home and she’s refusing to walk (attacking the lead), exhausted if taken on more than one walk and refusing to eat her one meal of the day 😬. Ho hum… and she is most definitely in her teenage phase, her recall is appalling!!

Have also discovered that bearded men bring out her guard dog instincts - BIL popped by to pick up my niece who was here yesterday and she wouldn’t stop barking and guard howling at him (despite having met him several times before)…

AnnieSnap · 10/08/2023 17:48

@Cocopuff I’ve had issues with Florapup barking at strangers recently (I think she’s in the post 12-week fear phase). Over the past couple of days, I have been asking random strangers (who look receptive) on walks to give her a treat. It’s improved things already and she only had a cursory bark at someone this afternoon. Maybe get your BIL to do this - and perhaps bearded men on walks 😯

Cocopuff · 10/08/2023 18:18

Good idea @AnnieSnap

Riverlee · 11/08/2023 09:59

Hello @Starpup. Very cute and furry.

I’m guessing a terrier of some sort.

tizwozliz · 11/08/2023 10:10

I think this photo sums up pup's character perfectly

He's actually a labradoodle but yes, very furry!

Great photo

Popping in for an update in full on first heat/season. 1 week so far. She is handling it okay I think she just seems very sad which is sad to see. Don’t want her to go through this again so will be booking her in for spaying hopefully early November time. Just making notes of when she started bleeding and when she finishes then will speak to the vet. Not bothered with any nappies as I think she would want to clean herself and not very messy to be honest. I worried I wouldn’t know when in heat but it is so obvious. Keeping her in the house and back garden for exercise more for the dogs in the neighbourhood than anything as not fair on them. However she is so tired just not herself very out of sorts so looking forward to it being over with.

No way!!!! I thought terrier too....... you sure 😜

userxx · 11/08/2023 13:35

I'm going to see my pup tomorrow, so excited.

Gizlotsmum · 11/08/2023 19:18

So gizlotspup had an unexpected bet tip today, side of his face was swollen. £450 and a sedation later it turns out the culprit was a grass seed which had embedded itself in his mouth and became infected! I feel so bad for not knowing/spotting it earlier and he is getting a muzzle for walks!!

Puppy survival thread part 2
AnnieSnap · 11/08/2023 19:23

@Gizlotsmum poor baby. So many people have reported serious problems with grass seeds this year. I’ve had dogs for 50 years and never had a dog pick one up! Weird! Hope gizlotpup feels much better soon.
