Can we have a mongrel thread?? A proper mixed ddog?? Not a make believe new fangled 'breed' created to get a bit of this and a bit of that!!
I want to see MONGRELS!!
Like back in the day when you could never figure how what you actually owned!! Obviously no random caught in a garden mixes now but there must be some tatty unknown Smelly Bills out there!!
I actually have a ddog that is 3 breeds and the breeder was quite specific in her description.. But surely 3 breeds =mongrel right?
*Lighthearted thread...

Ooh this is a great thread - so many beautiful dogs!

Does mine count? He was sold to his original owner as a proper "designer" dog (chug) but is actually a very improper little mishmash of all sorts.

@tabulahrasa

Not a clue, no real guesses either, other than I think a fair bit of herding or livestock guardian in there somewhere. The rescue thought retriever cross, but I think they were blinded by his colour... which isn’t a lab coat in texture or actually in colour if you look close up and by his ears which were still totally down.

But he’s definitely a proper mongrel, I’m pretty sure every bit of him is from a different dog, lol

GSD in there somewhere...head tilt and eyes! Ear prick too!
userxx · 15/12/2021 22:23

@OneOfTheGrundys Very podenco looking.

waterlego · 15/12/2021 22:53

@IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere, I’m in love with Bonzo.

@SandyBayley, here is my rescue mutt (also quite foxy looking) wearing his fox shit cravat.

No idea why I’ve also posted a random photo, sorry 😂

This is our Bill. Born at Dogs Trust 10 years ago today. There’s some German Shepherd in there, some Collie, some Staffie according to Dogs Trust and who knows what else. We picked him from the litter, he was the only black and white one while the rest were various mixes of brown, beige and cream, some long haired and some short.
He’s very intelligent and such a gentle, loving boy. I adore him.

I can see the likeness!

Love the darker fur around his neck, looks like he needs a shave!

elQuintoConyo · 15/12/2021 22:59

This is Alice. She's six years old, we've had her five. She was found wandering an industrial estate, in good physical health but very psychologically traumatised.

She's part Portuguese Podenco (hunting dog) and we think golden retriever for the coat. Podencos are treated atrociously here in Spain. My son just did a presentation on podencos in his school (he's 10) and kids were crying cos he said shelters are full of them - they've almost all met Alice and now they all want one!

She's scared of travelling in the car, loud noises and large, booming men. She loves digging on the beach, running in the woods, and sleeping on ds' bed.

She's supposed to be the best type of hunter: sight, sound and smell. But she didn't notice the cat Grin so she's rather a spoon!

@userxx, that was the fox shit 😫 He didn’t need a shave but he did need a shower!

SandyBayley · 15/12/2021 23:03

I like to think DDog rolls in the fox poo to get close to his ancestors being a 'dox' fox/dog hybrid @waterlego

kingprincess · 15/12/2021 23:05

@DepartFromTheIllegitimateChild he's so much lovelier than the 'designer' version! Bet he can breathe easier too

kingprincess · 15/12/2021 23:07

@waterlego genuinely thought you'd posted a comparison pic to show how much your dog looks like Kate Middleton! Before I read your post I was carefully comparing them & came to the conclusion that actually yes he has a certain elegance and I can see the resemblance 😂

DepartFromTheIllegitimateChild · 15/12/2021 23:15

@kingprincess He says thank you! And I agree - he is bloody lovely indeed and does have a glorious lengthy snout for which I am very grateful.

waterlego · 15/12/2021 23:16

@kingprincess, that’s brilliant 😂 He will be pleased to know someone thinks he is elegant.

userxx · 15/12/2021 23:19

Oh I see!! Nice!!! Nothing smells quite like it 🤢

ErrolTheDragon · 15/12/2021 23:20

Every day - literally daily - we get asked what they both are.

I do hope that you sometimes deadpan 'they're dogs'.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 15/12/2021 23:24

@waterlego Bonzo says thank you and if you have any spare cuddles or chest scratches available please send them his way because no one has paid him any attention for at least 10 minutes and he is considering leaving home.

Your boy is handsome too. Do you carry ketchup with you to neutralise the smell? We always carried little sachets with us because we had a terrier who would stop drop and roll!

Grumpyosaurus · 16/12/2021 07:17

Loving all these pictures.

I have pedigree dogs now but in my early childhood we had a street dog, who looked a bit like a small flatcoated retriever. He was an utterly wonderful dog, tolerant, easy-going and amiable and probably entirely to blame for my love of dogs.

kingprincess · 16/12/2021 08:08

The Romanian rescues - is there a particular charity or something that they all come from?

SilverHairedCat · 16/12/2021 08:15

@kingprincess there's lots of them about. Mine came from Freedom Angels Romania - www.fardogs.co.uk/. She was already in a foster home here.

One massive caveat - Snow was and still is a very traumatise dog. She's about 6 now, and she's obviously been through a lot. She's still jumpy at random things, has a natural tendency to run away from what scares her meaning we've lost her a couple of times, she didn't know how to play - had to learn that, didn't know how to eat from a bowl (scared of it), and initially screamed when humans tried to come near her. It took months to get her to take food from our hands.

She's now an absolute cuddle bug and harasses anyone nearby for fussed by pawing them constantly 😂. She runs like a puppy with legs in all directions, pounces on sticks and rolls on everything that could be of interest. She has to trail a line everywhere she goes as she can't be trusted fully off lead - a year with us and she'll still run if something spooks her. She's very bright, super quick to learn, has amazing recall but life is just very scary to her still.

They are wonderful dogs, but some of them are very damaged indeed.

imovethestarsforno1 · 16/12/2021 09:50

What absolutely gorgeous dog 😍

I can see lab in the face and head shape but the ears say German shepherd to me. What a lovely dog

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 16/12/2021 10:25

The grumpiest mongrel I ever met was my dgm's ddog. He was found one cold night in the local field just sat there. Dgm was adamant she wasn't keeping him so referred to him as Nameless..
For the entire 15 years she had him!! No wonder he was grumpy!
A bog standard mid brown mid size ddog.
But he was well loved..
As was his mongrel friend Sheba... Owned by my friend Collette. But there was so many of them the gate was always open and she went to dgm's house every time. When dgm moved with permission she took Sheba. Cheered Nameless up a bit!!
Imagine seeing ddogs wandering about now being acceptable!! Be on Gumtree with a hefty price tag !!

Here's my purebred foxshit rolling, needy, black and white mix up. Having to share his bed with his best mate - DS (probably a JRT/Spaniel mix in there)

He's 7 now and this is a shameless plug for Heathlands.org.uk the rescue we got him from (based in Hertfordshire) who brought him over from Ireland
