I have a nameless puppy... any ideas?

He’s 5 months, been in a shelter the entire time, he’s very sweet but seems to have saved up all the chewing Hmm lol

He’s only been here since yesterday, we’ve cracked going upstairs (they were the work of beelzebub and he’s too chewy to leave alone so I had to sleep on the couch last night) made a start on crate training, he seems to have housetrained himself while in kennels which is a bonus, but I kind of need to call him something now to get started on everything else.

I don’t like people names, I don’t want anything like Marley or Bailey where you meet 2 on every walk...

Oh and it can’t have R in it (my DS has a speech disorder)

Also, my DP pointed out that my last two dogs have begun with a b, I don’t want that to be a thing, lol, so, preferably not starting with a b.

Not a clue what he is, they only ever had the puppies, not a mum and he actually looks like a completely different mix of dogs in every photo, lol... but I’ll put one in anyway so you can see him.

My front runner at the moment is Dax, but it’s only me that likes it, lol.

I considered bilbo, but it’s a b... and tbh, I’m not a massive hobbit or LORT fan, I just like it, so I’ve gone off that.

And I did seriously consider chomp, lol, but it sounds too similar to my cat’s name

So, um, I suspect quirky is probably what I’m after, but not so weird that my DP and DS object

TIA Grin

Sushi, Yuzu, or Bone-Bone.

Dax is certainly in the Marley category imo.

Floralnomad · 06/03/2021 01:51

He looks like a Buddy to me but that is a B name and person name at a push . Alternatively Dash , Spud or Woody . He looks lovely btw .

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 01:54

“Dax is certainly in the Marley category imo.”

Is it? I haven’t met one... he’s got little brown spots on his nose that made me think of the deep space nine character.

By quirky, I don’t mean, try hard btw, just I tend to like pets to have names I definitely wouldn’t call a child, or in the case of my last few fosters - your dad Hmm lol

Can’t do buddy, it’s my DD’s flatmates dog’s name

I’m liking dash right enough

He’s too little to be spud, spud is a big dog’s name, I don’t know why, but in my head it is, lol

Oh, well, in that case call him default and rip the band aid off.
tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:00

Oh and the b thing isn’t a hard rule, just my DP said, well you have to name him something beginning with b, to go with the last two and I insisted it wasn’t a thing, one arrived with a name that I just didn’t object to enough to change.

And I don’t want him to be right... so...

YesItsMeIDontCare · 06/03/2021 02:01

What was his name at the shelter? Could be a starting point?

Personally I'd call him Chewbarker 😁

Crunched · 06/03/2021 02:02

He has the look of a Roman dog so Felix or Augustus (Gus or Gussie).

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:03

“Personally I'd call him Chewbarker”

Lol, it’d suit him just now tbh... but no easy to call...

He was sage, but I’m just not feeling like he’s a sage and he doesn’t know it anyway.

Parker?

Eteri · 06/03/2021 02:03

Oh, Augustus is brilliant. I'm totally stealing that one to name my next pet Augustus Gloop.
Eteri · 06/03/2021 02:05

Call him River. He sort of looks like River Phoenix.

No, wait Keanu.

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:10

“Oh, well, in that case call him default and rip the band aid off.”

Yeah, that’d never get past the rest of the family, lol.

The last couple of fosters have had older middle aged men names - not actually this , but like Steve... which is really amusing till you tell people you’re just popping out with Steve and it just sounds real odd.

I tried really hard for shep and the like, but they’re having none of it.

Gus I’m quite liking and I like the idea of him having a full name tbh, lol

The one is mine btw, not fostering him, hence being able to change his name.

OP posts:
tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:13

R names are definitely out - DS can’t say Rs, and it bothers him... he’s an adult btw, so way past it changing now.

And my accent does not do Keanu attractively Blush

OP posts:
Eteri · 06/03/2021 02:13

I once had a cat named 'no name' because we couldn't think of a name for him. You can steal that one if you must.

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:15

Lol... I did consider Nemo for that very reason, but then it bothered me that people might think it was after the fish.

Butcanyoujusttellme · 06/03/2021 02:15

I’d say dax is in the Marley group too

Chewy
Taco
Gnasher
Sailor
Duke
Basil
Lupo
Mouse
Lord
Gryffindog

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:21

Huh... I’ve genuinely not met a Dax, not that I thought it was unique, lol, but I don’t know any. I was going through character names of things I like at the time.

I also tried Diggle as in Diggle the dwarf from narnia, but I got a very firm no on that one.

OP posts:
imamearcat · 06/03/2021 02:22

Paddy
Caffrey
Murphy
Cheers

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2021 02:32

Oh paddy, he could be paddywhack for long Grin

Well at least my list is longer, I’ll check back for more tomorrow Smile

Me and “good boy” or “god, no, it’s a stone fireplace you can’t chew that” are going to try sleeping upstairs tonight, lol (I figure they’re what he’s likely to think he’s called if I leave it too long)

OP posts:
Forestcantrun · 06/03/2021 02:36

I'm all for solid human names for dogs but you've mentioned you're not keen so I'll not mention Brian, Seamus or Kevin.
How about Dug/Doug? It or Fido were the only non human names I was willing to go for 🤣
Or Bubbles? Not dissimilar to the Beelzabub you mentioned? And it is easy to say.
Beautiful dog though OP.

tararabumdeay · 06/03/2021 02:40

Fido.
