A new Cushion for Pointies!

Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

OH! Sprocket is amazing. DPs auntie didn't like him at all when we got him, quite a few times she made comments saying he was far too big and shouldn't be in the house so we needed to build him a pen outside and make him live out there (yeah right, as if!). Today, she KISSED him!!!!!

TheCunnyFunt · 20/08/2012 22:37

You are very welcome Sanity :) make yourself comfortable Wink I will just say a quick hello (Hello!) as I'm off to bed, lovely to meet you!

TheCunnyFunt · 20/08/2012 22:44

Oh and ya'all, what do you think to the new thread title (when I start it!)

"Greyhound, Whippet or Lurcher owner? Come and have a seat on the new pointy hounds cushion!"

I thought it would be better to include the most popular pointies in the title as people may not realise what a 'pointy' is. Then I think the OP will be the same as this one but with a list of shopping links added! What do you all think? Should I keep the poem too? I like your input :)

sanityawol · 20/08/2012 22:55

Thanks for the welcome Cunny.

I think it would be a good idea to have the most common types in the title - I've seen the Pointies thread appear in active convos a few times and only clicked on it today.

Ps. I now have a small space on the sofa

TheCunnyFunt · 21/08/2012 07:32

:o Glad you got a space in the end sanity!

Well I just went on the AA route planner to see how far the GGG is from us, it's 45.7 miles and it would take 1 hr 17 mins for us to get there. Might see you there Scuttle :o

Scuttlebutter · 21/08/2012 14:50

Ooh, Cunny, yes, I like the new thread title. Smile

Think you should definitely attend the GGG - Andy is dying to meet Sprocket. Grin

Sanity, fingers crossed for your lovely lurcher, and that you occasionally get a seat... Wink

Picked up Boola's ashes today from the vet. But came home to find a lovely order had come through via the website, so another day of ver mixed emotions.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 21/08/2012 15:28

Welcome sanity !

We're going away that night Cunny and plan on visiting kind Mr Vet for some sedatives for the closing of the Paralympics. The worry is that for the opening, DH won't be around and I don't fancy trying to grapple with a dozy unsteady 40 kilo Billy on my own!

Where's Boola going to rest Scuttle ?

Scuttlebutter · 21/08/2012 16:07

We haven't decided yet, Betsey. May end up as a combo of some of his favourite spots. He's back home now, so no rush. Sad

Hope all goes well withthe Paralympic opening.

TheCunnyFunt · 21/08/2012 19:48

That's sounds like a nice idea Scuttle, a few of his favourite places. As you mentioned above he loved to have a leisurely sniff around the garden in the evening, so maybe he'd like a little of himself put into the garden when it's a lovely warm evening.

TheCunnyFunt · 21/08/2012 21:51

Scuttle I asked DP about the GGG, and he wants to know a few things before he can be persuaded and google has failed me! Perhaps you might be able to help me out? He wants to know what exactly will be there besides 100's greyhounds, and does it cost/how much is it to get in? Would be ever so grateful if you could help! :)

Scuttlebutter · 21/08/2012 23:17

Hi Cunny, as far as I know there's no admission cost. There is a big greyhound fun dog show and apparently about 50 trade stalls (how could you miss the Tent of Destiny? Wink ). There is a link - why not give the RGT a call in the morning and check on admission prices? Here is a blog post about last year's event which gives a flavour. Here is another blog post about a previous event. These both give quite a flavour. Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 22/08/2012 08:48

Ooh thanks, I looked on the RGT page but it wasn't very informative. But it's a good idea to ring them. Might tell DP I've entered Sprocket in a couple of classes so now we have to go :o sneaky? Moi?

Scuttlebutter · 22/08/2012 09:25
Grin

Must say, I love the fact there's so many grund classes, including all the ones for black greyhounds. By then Sprocket's scar will have healed nicely and his coat will be gleaming.

You could be really naughty and enter DH in the Fancy Dress...... Wink

MissBetseyTrotwood · 22/08/2012 11:25

ROFL @ 'Tent of Destiny'!

TheCunnyFunt · 22/08/2012 13:06

Oooh he'd be furious :o he hates fancy dress and making an idiot out of himself :o

I think if we do go I'll send Sprocket to the poodle parlour the day before, he needs a good pampering session, manicure, pedicure, bath, ears etc. I hope the fur doesn't take too long to grow back on his legs. His front right leg is now all shaved inbetween the 2 joints (ankle and elbow?) and his front left has a strip shaved off the front, presumably he had a drip there or something.

We are currently sat on the sofa, he has his paw on my leg and his nose shoved behind my back :)

TheCunnyFunt · 22/08/2012 13:19

Sprocket leaned on DD the other week, it was so cute! She was sat on my knee and Sprocket came over for a fuss, so I let DD pet him and she was rubbing his neck up and down and he was loving it! He loved it that much he leaned in :)

Scuttlebutter · 22/08/2012 13:53

Awww, I love it when they lean..... Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 22/08/2012 17:18

I suddenly have the most overwhelming urge for Sprocket to win something. I so hope we do go to GGG, I'm thinking about the 'black dogs' class, and 'handsomest dogs' class. He is pretty darn gorgeous, especially when he's alert and he's got his head up with his ears pricked with a 'wassat!?!' expression on his face :o

Scuttlebutter · 22/08/2012 17:55

That's the trouble with these sorts of events. It is the most wonderful sensation when the dog you know is handsome, beautiful, etc has that vindicated by a third party AND you get a lovely rosette. Blush

I love rosettes - am organising them for a charity dog show in September and it's such fun choosing the various colours and designs. We are making sure that all the child handlers get one, and there are plenty for classes like Best Veteran and Best Rescue. In fact we've got special trophies and champion rosettes for the Best Veteran and Best Rescue - we think those are such special classes. Smile

Have you ever taken Sprocket to any smaller, local charity dog shows? They are such a nice afternoon out anyway - am sure P would enjoy herself too.

TheCunnyFunt · 22/08/2012 19:14

No we haven't, the official LGT show was on mine and little P's birthdays weekend. All the little shows this year have been at inconvenient times actually :o

If we can't go to GGG (which I hope we do!) there's an LGT greyhound walk the day after so we might go to that instead.

BehindLockNumberNine · 22/08/2012 21:22

Haha, I can relate to the rosette - fever... Sam has been entered into two dogs shows now, never won a bean Sad

Having a sudden panic - we managed to get last minute tickets to the paralympics for the evening session on Tuesday 4th Sep. We will be out of the house for max 6 hours and I can't find anyone to have Sam [wail]

Today we accidentally (got caught in traffic) left him for 5.15 hours and I was fretting like a good'un. He was fine, pleased to see us but fine.
But six hours - eek....
Tying myself in knots... [fret]

MissBetseyTrotwood · 22/08/2012 22:28

Are your tix for Stratford or elsewhere?

If Billy weren't so darn arsey about other dogs and his space I'd say you could leave Sam here. If you drove you could park your car at my place (I have spesh permits, y'know) and go to the session from there.

Look, if push came to shove could you bring him in the car, walk him here and when he was good and ready he could have a sleep and an eat and drink in the car? DH and I could go out and check on him regularly, take him out for a spin round the block etc. DH is here that day because BOTH ours start back at school the next day, Weds 5th. DS2's first ever day!

I know it's not an ideal solution but just something to think about. We're going on the 3rd!

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/08/2012 09:46

Hi Betsey,

Tix are for Stratford. Sadly, Sam cannot be left in the car (there would be no car left to return to) but thanks for the offer..
Just discovered another problem - I have inset day that day (so I knew I had to go into school) but failed to realise we have an external training session booked until 4. By the time we get to London our session will be almost over (we have 4 - 9 tickets to the park only)

Maybe I should send dh and the dc alone, (dh has the day off) and they can head into London earlier, and my ticket goes unused. Sad

Gah!! We were so excited at finally finding tickets I forgot to think it through and just booked them Grrrr.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 23/08/2012 16:52

It does sound as though it would be much less stressful to stay home - our offer still stands if they want to drive in though. Smile

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/08/2012 16:56

Ran idea of me staying home past dh and he was not keen.

Now waiting to hear from our regular dogsitter if she can squeeze Sam in - am all nervous, jump everytime the phone rings...
Also waiting to have work confirm it is definately a 4pm finish as opposed to a 3pm as per paperwork.

So, if (and it is a big if) the dogsitter can have Sam, and if (another if) work are happy to release us at 3pm, then we will all go and I might just want to take you up on your car parking offer...

Fingers crossed...
