Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

I'm here. Nothing very major to report. I've got tonsillitis so am feeling v sorry for myself and am having to take lots of ABs. Just been curled up on the sofa with Boola watching the dressage.

BehindLaneNumberNine · 09/08/2012 21:37

Hello, am back of holiday, having had a fab time Grin

Sorry to hear about lurcher-girl's tail Margrat, what a shock! And yes, sod's law it happened the day before you went on holiday!!

My poor friend who looked after Sam last week has had a bit of a time of it with him... His poo cleared up quite quickly with the steroids so that was fab. But half way through the week Sam's histiocytoma ulcerated and the whole of his underbelly / legs / thighs etc erupted in what can only be described as chicken pox type lesions, little red lumps that blistered and then crusted over. She got straight on the phone to my vet who told her to buy antisceptic skin cream but gaver her permission to use aloe vera straight from the plant (her preferred method). It worked and he is now much less red and far less itchy but looks a state, covered in scabs all over his belly, legs, sides, paws...) On the plus side the histocytoma is half as thick as it used to be.
Vet and friend at a loss as to what could have been going on. But his pointy lordship is as bright as can be so no one is too worried... but gasp!, that dog will be the death of me!

BlueGuinefort · 09/08/2012 21:53

Goodness, lock, Sam certainly keeps you on your toes. Poor scabby soul. Hope it clears up soon.

DDog is becoming a little more animated as she settles in. She even barked twice today Shock - once when we had a miniscule lie-in ('til 7:10) and once at the dog next door when she heard him sniffling at the other side of the wall. And she has attempted the sofa twice!

I have been looking into flea and worm treatments. What does everyone use? Or should we just take her to the vets and see what they recommend and then buy it cheaper online?

Scuttlebutter · 09/08/2012 22:34

Blimey, poor Sam! Shock Glad he's recovering, but what a time he's having! Pleased your friend was able to use aloe vera with good effect. It sounds almost like an allergic reaction.

Blue - so pleased Ddog is settling in. Think it's worth seeing what your vet recommends. We use Milbemax and are quite happy with that, mainly because that's the one the vet recommended.

TheCunnyFunt · 10/08/2012 09:40

Poor sam, he doesn't have much luck does he bless him! Glad his poo is alright now though, that's good.

Scuttle I hope your tonsilitis clears up soon, I've never had it but BIL has, and he said it was awful. He said ice cream helped Wink

Thanks Blue you've just reminded me, Sprocket needs doing this month! DD ripped august off the calendar Hmm so I'm trying to remember everything that needs doing this month :o

TheCunnyFunt · 11/08/2012 10:09

The guy that runs LGT has posted a picture of a gorgeous black greyhound girl. She went in the vets for her spay and the vet found she had no uterus but had 2 testicles instead! A hermaphrodite greyhound! Kev at LGT said they've had one other dog like it. And someone else commented saying they had worked with a pseudohermaphrodite greyhound, had a uterus and testicles!

Scuttlebutter · 11/08/2012 11:42

Blimey, Cunny, that's a new one - never heard of that before. Shock

Thank goodness for anti biotics - they have been working and I'm nearly back to normal. Yes, I had lots of ice cream as it was the only thing I could swallow apart from yoghurt, so now feel like I never want to see it again!!

NiceCupOfTea · 11/08/2012 14:05

Hi all, my gorgeous girl has a few red patches on her tum, probably from long scratchy grass on a field we walk her in occasionally - is Sudocreme ok for dogs? Or is there a more dog-friendly antiseptic cream I should get her? NCOT

TheCunnyFunt · 11/08/2012 21:07

I wouldn't put sudocreme on it, dogs have different skin to ours and it could react badly to it. Not sure what you could put on it instead though, hopefully Scuttle will be along soon with some advice.

TheCunnyFunt · 11/08/2012 21:11

DP had to rush his 2 brothers and mum off to hospital as his oldest younger brother has cut his finger off with an angle grinder. No idea why their dad couldn't take them though Confused

hazeldog · 11/08/2012 21:19

I've used sudocreme on mine without a problem. Ive also had good results from iodine spray and purple spray (for horses) to prevent infection and comfrey ointment for healing wounds.

Scuttlebutter · 11/08/2012 23:13

Hi Nice, our vet advises generally NOT to use human meds on dog skin. So, for instance on cuts, we only use salt water. I don't feel able to advise as I don't know what is in Sudocreme, what the active ingredients are and how safe they are for dogs.

The only cream we've used on ours has been arnica cream for bruises and a nice hoof cream for corns on the feet.

Purple spray would be absolutely fine, as that's designed for animal use (have used it myself many times on horses), but that's really for cuts and punctures, rather than the sore, tickly areas you seem to be describing.

Cunny - Shock at your BIL. Sending very best wishes for a speedy recovery. Hope they will be able to re-attach the finger.

Scuttlebutter · 12/08/2012 17:18

Sorry, folks, but a very hard post to write. Our darling Boola has gone to the Bridge. We have just come back from the Emergency Vets (who were wonderful) with an empty collar and lead. We are both in bits. We think it was bone cancer, though at the end he was in so much pain that we didn't want to prolong things by taking an X ray. This is specially hard coming so soon after losing our precious Booty. I just hope they are having a very joyous reunion at the Bridge. I also take great comfort from the passing itself - cradled by me and DH, he passed so peacefully, with us telling him how much we loved him.

NiceCupOfTea · 12/08/2012 18:20

Scuttle, I'm so, so sorry at your second terrible loss in such a short space of time. You've been a real support to us on here and I for one value your advice highly - our thoughts are with you at this awful time. I don't know what else to say other than take care...

BehindLaneNumberNine · 12/08/2012 21:14

Sending you another hug Scuttle, thoughts are with you and Andrew. xx

TheCunnyFunt · 12/08/2012 21:38

Oh Scuttle I am so very sorry to hear this. It must've come as such a shock. My thoughts are with you all xxx

MissBetseyTrotwood · 13/08/2012 08:37

I'm so, so sorry Scuttle.

Big, big hugs to both of you.

x

Scuttlebutter · 13/08/2012 11:51

Firstly, thank you all so much for your good wishes, it's very much appreciated. Smile We are all devestated, and I keep expecting to see him. The office where I'm typing this still smells of him and his blonde hair is all over his duvet. Sad

Secondly, and strangely, the website is now officially OPEN, so please feel free to stop by and browse, or share with any fellow pointy lovers. Nicely, it also has lots and lots and pictures of our darling blonde bombshell - in a way, it's a beautiful tribute to him, and DH has sneaked a couple of pics of Booty in too Wink He told me she'd have liked this and I agreed completely. Smile linky

MissBetseyTrotwood · 13/08/2012 21:56

Cracking site Scuttle. I will be buying a blue housecoat for Billy for DH's birthday. We currently have a rainbow one and it is the blight of DH's life.

How was today...

TheCunnyFunt · 14/08/2012 20:27

How are you all bearing up Scuttle?

Update on BIL, wasn't actually his finger he chopped off, it was a sliver off the end, so when it heals he'll have a proper Peter Pointer pointy finger.

Had some bad news yesterday though, found out that someone I went to school with was found dead yesterday morning, he hung himself :( 21 years of age and he left behind a young daughter aged 3-4 :(

NiceCupOfTea · 14/08/2012 21:10

Can I pick your brains about greyhound behaviour (or it could be a general dog-type thing, I suppose)? I can't figure out why New Girl pants so much in the evening. We go out for our usual 8pm walk, no real exertion beyond mooching around a field and a few streets for 25 minutes, max, and doing a poo (her, not us Grin). But the way she pants for hours after we get back you'd think she was back on the track. It's usually nice and cool that time of evening and it's not unusually warm in the house when she gets back to her beloved sofa (and she has access to water all day but doesn't seem unusually thirsty). All this panting seems rather excessive. Should I be concerned? NCOT

MissBetseyTrotwood · 14/08/2012 21:34

That's awful Cunny. Poor little girl.

NCOT Billy's back from kennels today and is panting away. It's still quite warm here and the sofa is very warm to sit on. As long as it settles down eventually I don't think it can be anything serious?

MissBetseyTrotwood · 14/08/2012 21:35

Oh, just read my last post - for me not you!! Ha ha. Blush

BehindLockNumberNine · 14/08/2012 21:40

Snort! at Betsey and the amateur klaxon Grin

As for the panting, I don't know. Sorry.

Well, am pleased to say (tentatively, don't want to tempt fate) that Sam's hives are disappearing and no new ones have broken out. And the nasty, huge, histiocytoma on his belly has more than halved in size and is definately looking like it is going to go away Grin

Tummy wise, we switched him from chicken to Turkey and it appears to have firmed up the runny poo. For now anyway, he likes to keep us guessing on a daily basis (our morning game consists of deciding to take poo bags or a bottle of water and tissue on our walk. Inevitably I guess wrong Grin)

Scuttle, I hope you are ok xx

MissBetseyTrotwood · 14/08/2012 21:59

So glad things have settled down Lock. Hope you were able to enjoy your holiday.

Took a tiny little black girl Betty (love her name, Black Betty!) out for a walk with Bill today when we picked him up. She was adorable - gentle, ditzy... DH was in love too. Awful kennel coat and nasty scars on her thighs with a massive chunk out of one ear all made her so much cuter. But... too many changes coming up in the near future for us to take on another. My course, perhaps a new job, DS2's emerging SN. Wouldn't be fair to take her on.

Lit a candle tonight for sweet Boola.
