Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

Gah, posted too soon.

Meant to ask - where did you get your memeory foam offcuts from??

MissBetsyTrotwood · 25/04/2012 18:20

Billy's new house collar

Wow Lost that is a bad day! You really earned that snifter. Might have to go another piece of memory foam for the kitchen too!

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 25/04/2012 19:00

Lock, ebay I just searched for memory foam dog bed and these popped up!

They do bigger ones too Betsy. Love that collar, it's brilliant!

Thanks for that spaghetti, will save up and get a piece for the base of Sam's crate :-)

That is one cool collar!! I want to get a new housecollar for Sam but dh has vetoed the idea for financial reasons... (will do it at some point though...)

I have also decided to invest in a rainprooof coat for Sam. He has been wearing his fleece lined nylon dog coat but it has not stood up to this rain.

Expensive business, these dogs!

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 25/04/2012 19:29

Also Lock, you will get it cheaper if you give them the exact measurements that you need, they will trim it down for you! I didn't order the exact size that I needed because the bit I cut off will do us perfectly as a comfy backrest for our bed :o

We sort of had to buy him a new one as he had a bit of a fox poo incident at the weekend and try as I might I can't get the smell out. I also thought the words were a bit apt for a rescue dog?

I totally recommend the waterproof coat thing. We ended up getting ours off the RGT website and it's super quality. Not as glam as some others but DH has absolutely vetoed walking him while he's wearing anything snazzy. He says it would be an affront to his nobility - I assume he's talking about Billy's because we are common as muck!

I love the memory foam backrest idea.

BehindLockNumberNine · 26/04/2012 07:55

Mmm, I am sure there is still a faint whiff of fox poo about Sam's collar... (will try to convince dh anyhow...)

Have just looked on the RGT website for raincoats - their smallest size is 26 and Sam needs a 24. Back to searching...

bochead · 26/04/2012 11:58

The ebay seller I mentioned makes them in all sizes. I only got one to have an affordable spare but it's become our whippet's "main" coat as it's so nice. I think she must be a work at home Mum or summat as her prices compared to the high quality of her product are so reasonable.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 26/04/2012 12:03

Couture coats bochead. I LOVE it!

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 27/04/2012 10:37

I find it really bizarre how Sprocket just accepted that he was now living here. When he first arrived, he made no obvious signs of missing his old family at all. No pining or anything. It's almost as if he knew exactly what was happening.

My dog is meant to be whippet cross - but don't really think there's much whippet - bit more grey but still not much, so I'm not going to hang around (although her best friend was a grey and I love rough lurchers) but thought that I'd say that she LOVES her new (ish) memory foam mattress - having been happy in her basket but with arthritus kicking in we thought we'd get something with a bit more give. We got it in Petsat Home and got a waterproof cover and a spare cover too. Its great for sprawling over!

LostInWales · 27/04/2012 10:53

He really must have known he was home, how lovely. Someone gave me the number of a local rescue yesterday for 'when I want another dog', I really want to give them a call, it's going to be so hard waiting until he is grown up but it also cures my current broody state to know I can have another 'baby' in the future Grin

bochead those 'couture' coats are gorgeous, I'm very tempted but I have to find out how long my boys back it, I don't even have a tape measure, not that it matters because he still seems to be growing.

Gorgeous collar Betsy, you could spend a fortune on them couldn't you.

A curious question but what do you do with all the poo that accumulates? I had been bagging it as if we were out for a walk but it's ridiculous ending up with horrible bags full of bags full of poo. Please don't laugh at me, I know there must be a better way but what is it?

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 27/04/2012 11:03

You can get dog compost bins, you bury them I think, and add some sort of chemical? here. I'm now slighlty confused. Have you been saving his poo since december because you don't know what you should do with it? Confused

OP posts:
LostInWales · 27/04/2012 11:34

Nooooo, just bagging and binning (outside bin) but I feel really bad about it going into landfill somewhere in lots of little bags. I have also tried the putting it all in a big bag and binning it but the thought of it breaking on a bin man is too much for my conscience. He just seems to poo out so much more than we put in Confused

can you really imagine how much poo we'd have had in 5 months, we'd need to buy a bigger garden to keep it all in Grin

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 27/04/2012 11:56

Or a field. . . .

Mistle my dog loves his memory foam bed. So do I actually. After he went downstairs this morning I clambered in his bed Blush and it is very comfy. And I fit in his bed :o if I curl up

OP posts:
mistlethrush · 27/04/2012 12:06

mistledog has taken to sprawling quite a bit. And sometimes sticking her nose (most greyhound-like feature) under a front leg. And sometimes just gently sprawling partly off it onto the floor. Grin

Oh, it did post Hmm stoopid phone.

Mistle have a fab picture of Sprocket lying across one corner of his bed, literally only his belly was in the bed :o his back and front ends were on the floor :o

I got a picture of him roaching this morning, first time I've seen him do it!

MagratGarlik · 27/04/2012 16:44

Lost, mine now rarely poo in the garden. With timing walks when they are most likely to want a poo, it seems to work quite well and minimises the chances of dc's stepping in poo in the garden.

MagratGarlik · 27/04/2012 16:47

Spagetti, your boy is lovely - he looks a lot like a larger version of my whippetty.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 27/04/2012 17:04

Thanks Magrat :) he is rather handsome isn't he? He's always getting comments from other pointy folk (usually the same 2 I see) they always stop and give him loads of fuss saying how gorgeous he is. It's turned him into a right tart!

OP posts:
LostInWales · 27/04/2012 17:07

I don't think I got a dog, I got a poo machine. It will probably settle a lot but he is still on 3 meals a day as he burns through calories but if he eats too much he is sick, then he eats the sick, then he tries to kiss me Envy

bochead · 27/04/2012 17:18

supermarket biodgradable nappy bags at 75p a pop.

That way at least the poop can break down in landfill and not be sitting sealed up forever. As we live in london I just bung it in the nearest park bin on our walks. Not the perfect solution - but the best I've come up with so far.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 28/04/2012 19:07

Just watching Keith Lemons Lemonaid where 3 families were competing to win a puppy :( just any kind of puppy, could've been anything aslong as it was a puppy. It was a pug.
