Apparently it's starting soon! Sad that our Cassie isn't in it anymore (RIP) but we've still got Sunny.
It's one of my favourite TV shows. I now feel the need to binge the first four series again.

Has anyone seen Martina Laird in anything before? The way she talked in this with, so, so, many, pauses was bloody annoying.

Aixellency · 01/03/2023 08:24

I didn’t think I’d seen her in anything else - but her Wiki entry is huge.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Laird#Early_life_and_education

I found her absolutely wonderful - lovely to look at and listen to and absolutely someone I’d like to watch again.

Just finished all of it over 2 days. 😳 Filled a happy valley void for me! 😆 Really enjoyed it and hoping there’s another season. I can see the working relationship building between Sunny and JJ.

mickeysmug · 01/03/2023 16:53

I've watched 3 episodes. Will watch the rest tonight. I've enjoyed watching how the characters are coming together so far.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 01/03/2023 21:42

Hello all! I'm trying to stay on one episode a week as it gives me something to look forward to. It's the same day as 'The Last of Us' so Monday's are my new favourite day.

Loved the first episode and got chills from the theme music. I was confused about Sunny's home life as I couldn't remember much from before. I love all the stories of the different characters and looking forward to how they will all come together. A few funny bits here and there to lighten the mood. Such great writing.

The 'body' was amazing and very easy to believe it was real. Amazing talent to create that.

I was loving it until the last episode which I found pretty cringe tbh. Fairly predictable. Everything the fault of the privileged white man. My least favourite of the series.

The wig as well. Terrible. Why couldn't she use her own hair?

And yes, I found the acting irritating of Martina Laird. Just not believable.

Southeastdweller · 04/03/2023 08:25

Hayley Mills was wasted in this, wasn't she? Such a shame.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 04/03/2023 08:39

I was also distracted by Jessie's awful wig.. looked dry and stuck on. But then I saw her on the one show and it was exactly the same!

Aixellency · 04/03/2023 08:41

Oh dear!

CuriousMama · 04/03/2023 08:53

I didn't enjoy this as much as other series. Not because of no Cassie just al ok felt a bit off.
I thought the acting from most was good.
It was sad when we found out how Precious got Fetal alcohol syndrome.
Plus the sons upbringing.

What did confuse me was how Jay knew his gran when she came to the house yet she didn't know he existed? He said Sir H got there before his Gran?

CuriousMama · 04/03/2023 08:54

Missed an l and a random ok there for some reason? 🙈

Rosecoffeecup · 04/03/2023 09:33

Really disappointed in this series. The story just didn't grip me at all like 1-4 did.

I will try rewatching it in a few weeks with fresh eyes

CampervanKween · 04/03/2023 11:18

Lots of things didn't add up for me to be honest. Lots of blaming "the system" for failing people and no mention of anyone actually taking any accountability for their own actions.

The grandma being violently abusive towards her partner, and a violent alcoholic and all round terrible mum, just brushed aside.

Jay stealing and attacking a pregnant woman really nastily. Stealing, heroin addiction, then he brings her a bunch of flowers and he's redeemed.

The upskirting guy says he's tried to live well since. By stealing £80,000 of watches from his workplace? Really?

The team got it wrong so they're fallible. There's no justice in punishing someone for something he hasn't done. We are supposed to feel glad an elderly man dying of cancer who had at least paid money to the child, and her child, is framed for a crime he didn't commit?

Tony Hulme had tried to turn his life around by volunteering with the charity since the murders it said he had changed his politics. Yes no redemption for him even though he didn't actually do the murders? He's rich and white so he takes the blame for everything. Really lazy writing.

Southeastdweller · 04/03/2023 12:39

The writer would like to position the grandma as the victim of this story, but she took Tony’s money for years and helped cover up the killing of Joseph. It’s very lazy writing.

StellaOlivetti · 05/03/2023 21:17

Agree with lazy writing. I groaned aloud when it was revealed that the company had originally made its profits from the sugar trade … I saw it coming. But I liked Jess.

jay55 · 05/03/2023 21:44

It lost me at the second son reveal.
The rest was all trying to be too clever and not making much sense.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/03/2023 21:49

She was a child born of rape whose mother committed suicide and whose grandparents treated her as if she was evil. I'd say she was a victim. Hume's family made their money our of slavery, his policies in parliament affected people badly and he was her father why shouldn't she take his money. Plus he shot Joseph. She helped cover things up out of fear. The pain that he inflicted on her mother went down through generations - of course he was guilty.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/03/2023 21:50

Oops. I typed that before seeing the last few minutes! Still, he started the chain of events so I'd shed no tears for him.

CampervanKween · 05/03/2023 22:06

He didn't shoot anyone though did he. It was school level writing. There was no subtlety, no nuance. Also if everyone is a victim of their upbringing and can't grow or have agency for their own actions, then he is as much a victim of the way he was brought up.

Habreathmint · 05/03/2023 22:14

I thought it was rubbish. Predictable and boring. Suni's partner was bloody annoying and unpleasant to look at. Not impressed at all.

Mistymornin · 05/03/2023 22:31

I got lost at the half brother part. Also, didn’t Jay tell his grandmother that he lied to the police, that his mother shot the half brother and then she turned the gun on to herself (or am I making this up?).
