Apparently it's starting soon! Sad that our Cassie isn't in it anymore (RIP) but we've still got Sunny.
It's one of my favourite TV shows. I now feel the need to binge the first four series again.

I enjoyed it! Yes, not the most subtle storyline and I agree that Jessie clapping at the end and calling Tony "fella" Line of Duty style was totally cringey. But I loved all the bits with the team (love you Kaz, Fran, Murray) and the Sunny/Sal storyline. As somebody said upthread, the story raised a lot of questions about generational trauma and nobody being a pure victim or perpetrator.

What I did NOT understand was why Tony went along with the lie that he had shot the son. And surely the forensics wouldn't have borne that out either i.e. the bullet hole wouldn't have been in the right place/angle for being shot in the back of the head.

He took the blame because he was about to die anyway, and he wanted to repent for his sins.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/03/2023 12:16

He was guilty of perverting the course of justice in not reporting the shooting and then burying her other son's body in the garden. He was dying anyway so the length of sentence didn't make much difference to him.

And don't forget the rape of Ebele.

olivehater · 15/03/2023 19:44

You mean ebeles mother.

You mean ebeles mother.

Yes. He was definitely a rapist.

commentnotaquestion · 15/03/2023 20:00

Yes he was a nasty piece of work, no question about it. I thought they could have made his remorse a bit clearer - the night that Precious died was obviously a turning point for him but it wasn't really explained why. I guess it was because he saw all the damage his actions had caused and how messed up everybody was.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/03/2023 20:22

Some people on this thread have suggested he was scapegoated because he was 'the evil Tory' but he did loads of bad, illegal stuff just not the actual murder.

CampervanKween · 15/03/2023 22:37

I think the issue was that lots of people in this season did really shitty stuff but the only person punished was the straight white wealthy man. He was the only person who had to take accountability for his actions. His wife also got flack and she did fuck all wrong.

For some reason, the other characters got to blame their pretty horrific deeds on him as well.

Oh good, I was worried I would be on my own with feeling really frustrated with the last episode. It felt really like we were being lectured all the way through on rich white men = evil and then they leave it with Jay was lying? And the guy is dying anyway so highly unlikely to make it to trial.

And Karol - I could barely watch his scenes, he was so creepy and they had proof of the upskirting. But nothing happened?

I've been mulling it over all weekend and I'm still annoyed. Too many unsatisfying story arcs.

I agree, also with the pp who said that if the characters were all products of their upbringing and therefore couldn’t help their actions, why didn’t that also apply to Lord Hume ?
It was buzzard that upskirting sex pest was portrayed as someone worthy of redemption but Hume was worthy of being tried for a murder he hadn’t committed . Also laughable to think he would be done for a rape in 1962 when the woman was no longer alive, given how few contemporary rapes even get to trial.
Then there was the telephone call where Hume said to someone “What did you do? “ without us ever knowing who he spoke to.
All very preachy and simplistic too. I found it pretty annoying by episode six, and I love the characters and the previous series.

Such a huge waste of time. Jay with his staring pouty face, Bele with robot voice delivery. Sunny travels all the way to Paris just to interview a social worker, who committed sexual crimes but was never prosecuted because the stress of his job drove him to it?

Another cop drove from London to a commune in rural Wales only to find the cult leader had been dead for years. You couldn’t phone ahead and check first?

The MP gets charged with a rape that happened 50 years before with no evidence, no witnesses and the alleged victim has been dead for years? And we’re supposed to cheer at Jay’s admission that he was the killer because it’s ok to fit up the Rich White Tory MP?

So, did the Boring Husband sleep with the sister or not? Does the sister know the difference between snogging and sex?

Rubbish!

Rhondaa · 20/03/2023 16:16

'And when she was viewing her body at the start, she was saying something like "what did they do to you" over and over to her daughter'

Wtf was all that about. Why would they let anyone view decomposed/skeletal remains. They advise against it if someone is newly dead if there's any distressing damage to the body, someone shoved up a chimney for years was never going to be a useful or comforting viewing.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 20/03/2023 16:27

I gave up watching after 3 episodes as I just couldn’t get into it. I miss Nicole Walker. 🥺

Tirrrrred · 21/03/2023 20:32

Worst series yet. Didn't like any of the suspects so didn't care who had done it.

When Jay said "hi nan" 😥😥😥

pinkySilver · 25/03/2023 18:37

Agree with what's been said. I've just binge-watched and I still enjoyed it as I love Sunny and the weaving together of the strands of lives and the piecing together of clues. But it wasn't as good as previous series. Oddly I didn't miss Nicola Walker and quite liked the new woman.

I was frustrated by the plot holes and the predictable anti-Tory stuff that just never stopped. Hume wasn't alone - half the country voted for the cuts. That was how it was and there were reasons for that as people wanted a change. It was lazy writing to assume that everyone he encountered would've been anti-Tory,

And the "cuts" weren't responsible for everything. It was all just a bit laboured. How the double murder actually happened was also unbelievable - as was the false story about Hume actually shooting the guy in the back of the head, (when the bullet hole/s were in the side of the head). And if Ebele sat all night singing and rocking her and then stuffed her up a chimney????.

But I still enjoyed it! Hope that next series is better though.
