New 3 episode drama. Yes it will all be on itvx

no I don’t want bingers on this thread 😂

tv pace only

Maryland is a new three-part drama series which brings together Suranne Jones (Vigil (https://www.bt.com/tv/drama/vigil-season-2-bbc-cast-release-date-plot-trailer), Doctor Foster) and Eve Best (House of the Dragon (https://www.bt.com/tv/drama/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-release-date-timeline-news)) as sisters reunited in tragic circumstances.
Created by Anne-Marie O’Connor (Trollied, Hullraisers), the drama has been described as a story that "beautifully reveals the complexities of a sisterly relationship" after they uncover their mother’s secrets and l
ies.

O’Connor said the series was "a love story about two sisters", which explores the story of woman who steps away from the traditional roles we assign in families.

Maryland is the story of Becca and Rosaline, two sisters who have grown apart because of complex family dynamics and their careers.

However, when the body of an older woman found on Laxey Beach in the Isle of Man is revealed to be their mum, the sisters are reunited.

On top of mother Mary's death, the sisters discover she has been living a double life, leaving their father at home in Manchester to create another world… Maryland.

Confined to the island, the sisters can't escape the ripple effect of their mother's secrets and lies.

Suranne Jones said: "Maryland delves into family dynamics and the way in which we ‘label’ each other, sometimes never letting ourselves or our siblings break free from those roles.

"We look at how we grow apart from one another and how sometimes we don’t really know anything about the people we call our own.

"I love how complex sibling relationships can be and I'm thrilled we get to do it over three wonderful hours and not as a 'side story'.

"Maryland is an uncomfortable, funny and sometimes difficult story with two sisters at its heart and we can’t wait to take our audience along for the ride."

God, that was really dull.

Brightredtulips · 24/05/2023 22:16

I felt there were too many storylines. Thought the big sister looked older than the mum. Plot was all over the place. Was hugely distracted by mum's friend's face botox/surgery whatever.

Brightredtulips · 24/05/2023 22:24

Husband phones her coz he can't find the shower gel.

So , it was tax and road closures .

It was Isle of Wight filmed too. The seafront is IOW.

LadyWiddiothethird · 24/05/2023 23:57

The house the Mother inherited is in Howth,it is actually on the market for 2.2million Euros.Love Howth.

MillieMollieMandy1 · 25/05/2023 07:47

I enjoyed it. I liked that it was over just 3 days rather than dragged out over 5 days with a really unsatisfactory ending.

butterpuffed · 25/05/2023 08:45

There were so many unnecessary side stories along with the main storyline of Mary leading a double life which was huge . Both sisters had issues , one had a wayward daughter, Cathy had drugs available .

Mary's husband was distraught, Pete was quietly distraught. I thought the whole final episode was depressing .

butterpuffed · 25/05/2023 08:47

Pressed too soon . Meant to say I like my dramas to be entertaining .

Clawdy · 25/05/2023 09:05

Becca's husband had such a tiny mouth, I don't know how she managed to kiss it so passionately........

benfoldsfivefan · 25/05/2023 09:17

I thought this was the dreariest TV show I’d seen for a long time but then ITV drama’s are usually a bit shit.

ThePoshUns · 25/05/2023 09:40

I liked the character study more than the story line. I don't have a sister so found that dynamic interesting.

florentina1 · 25/05/2023 09:43

I really can’t make up my mind about it. I was interested in the first episode, but as it progressed and secrets were revealed I was a bit ‘meh’

it seemed like I was the first three episodes of an eight part series.

ThePoshUns · 25/05/2023 10:44

I guess there was no big reveal or twist at the end. Everything slowly unravelled and came to a neat end.
It was really about parts of their lives that were secret coming out, not just their Mothers?

diddl · 25/05/2023 13:48

I would have been much more interested in Mary's search for her Mum & their meeting.

How did the Mum get the house & how was Mary upkeeping it?

Plus her writing!

So did her husband know everything & she didn't trust him not to force her back to England?

Why hadn't she confided in her daughters & given them POA?

I thought this part had a lot of potential but it was just bloody bonkers really. So the mum told people she went to stay in a caravan in Wales with Maureen, yet really she was in the Isle of Man with a whole new set of deep friendships and a lover and a home of her own. I'm not sure how most people could get away with that. Just the airfare to the Isle of Man would have been expensive if she was a pensioner. There was nothing to show they had a lot of money.

Ultimately, I felt she was absolutely selfish. She inherited a lovely home and she discovered her birth mum wasn't the woman who brought her up yet she didn't share that with anybody. She even discovered she had Alzheimer's and didn't tell her own daughter.

I thought this had so much potential, but it just became silly.

Agree with all of this

martinisforeveryone · 25/05/2023 15:25

I wanted to like it and I do think it had something. I liked the playing out of the sisters' relationship and their history. I liked the John Bishop soundalike too.

Where it really lost me is in how established the mother's life was in the Isle of Man. I could believe that her own birth mother was well to do and left both the house and enough funds to keep and run it, but not that she'd been able to get away and spend so much time there that she'd got a complete life without her daughters having an inkling. As to whether her husband had any idea before he received his final letter, I wasn't sure, surely he must've?

If her excuse was supposed to be going to Wales with a friend, why not set it in Wales, even if they used Ireland to understudy the landscape again. That would've made the travelling more feasible, although maybe then her husband would've put pressure on to go along too.

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2023 15:28

What did the Mum do about the lockdown years ?

martinisforeveryone · 25/05/2023 15:51

I think they used artistic licence and pretended the pandemic didn't happen.

Topictwenty · 25/05/2023 15:56

I just couldn’t get past how there was really no explanation of how someone could spend so much time in a diff place to their normal life, to have such deep rooted relationships, yet no one suspected anything or talked about how much time she spent away from her family. I know this does happen from time to time in real life but I didn’t think this was realistic or explained well enough

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2023 16:01

If the Mum had worked away from the home with a job , that might have offered an explanation as to how she was on and off planes and traveling around without them realizing anything was amiss
Most people would be suspicious or Margaret might have landed her in it by accident or something. Becca said she was close to her , yet they accepted she had these trips away rather a lot and left dad on his own.
Considering she only packed one case, Becca seemed to have a lot of different clothes and they were not the mums I assume!

IwantToRetire · 25/05/2023 16:22

I binged watched this as I find getting caught up in the speculation after each episode means I then lose the actually plot.

But as others have said the plot was just so implausible.

And whilst I would normally be the first in line to blame a not very sympathetic husband / father I was astonished that the rest of the family just let the mother's husband (their father) leave and not worry about him.

His wife either started out lying to him, then must have told him she was leading this double life and was involved with somebody else and he was just supposed to play along??!!

Or was it that we were meant to think he was more worried about appearances than anything else.

As a way of looking at how family life can seem to be shared but is actually experience in very different ways I thought it could have been really interesting.

And I thought Stockard Channing's character just bonkers but it seemed like they needed her to say pretentious things about how we cope with life or something.

I'm beginning to think the 9pm slot on the main channels just aren't worth bothering with any more.

MattySwiftlysings · 25/05/2023 16:59

Could have been so much better 😕

Psychologically, it was interesting regarding the difference in their childhoods but the story had so much more to offer.

Waiting to see if it comes…..

Xmasbaby11 · 25/05/2023 20:15

I was so keen to watch this, and love the two leads, but gave up in the second episode. Doesn't make any sense why the mum would keep all those secrets .. who would be bothered if she had a birth mum? What would she gain from the secrecy? Also so implausible that a 70something with Alzheimers could keep up a double life long term. And then incredibly selfish to kill herself and letting everyone discover her lies.

I thought it was just lazy writing throwing so many dramatic storylines in ..basically none of them knew her mum and the dad was fine with her living a double life and lying to everyone, plus contributing to the running of a second home.

Last time I saw Eve Best was in Nurse Jackie and she was so glamorous and good looking .. did feel she looked too old for this role, which is probably just a sad reflection of what we're used to seeing on TV. Suranne Jones looked 10 plus years younger. I wasn't impressed with any of the acting.

tennissquare · 25/05/2023 20:21

It was so weak in so many way but particularly the poor acting and Eve Best looking as old as her mother (in the video).

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2023 20:41

Suranne Jones is usually very good, but she looked ill at ease in this and not that convincing. Her husband wasn't much better either.
Eve best was better and lots of chemistry there with the tasty taxi man!
I liked the two daughters
It was ok , something to watch , but not a classic drama and I can't see them doing another one really.
