New 3 episode drama. Yes it will all be on itvx

no I don’t want bingers on this thread 😂

tv pace only

Maryland is a new three-part drama series which brings together Suranne Jones (Vigil (https://www.bt.com/tv/drama/vigil-season-2-bbc-cast-release-date-plot-trailer), Doctor Foster) and Eve Best (House of the Dragon (https://www.bt.com/tv/drama/house-of-the-dragon-season-2-release-date-timeline-news)) as sisters reunited in tragic circumstances.
Created by Anne-Marie O’Connor (Trollied, Hullraisers), the drama has been described as a story that "beautifully reveals the complexities of a sisterly relationship" after they uncover their mother’s secrets and l
ies.

O’Connor said the series was "a love story about two sisters", which explores the story of woman who steps away from the traditional roles we assign in families.

Maryland is the story of Becca and Rosaline, two sisters who have grown apart because of complex family dynamics and their careers.

However, when the body of an older woman found on Laxey Beach in the Isle of Man is revealed to be their mum, the sisters are reunited.

On top of mother Mary's death, the sisters discover she has been living a double life, leaving their father at home in Manchester to create another world… Maryland.

Confined to the island, the sisters can't escape the ripple effect of their mother's secrets and lies.

Suranne Jones said: "Maryland delves into family dynamics and the way in which we ‘label’ each other, sometimes never letting ourselves or our siblings break free from those roles.

"We look at how we grow apart from one another and how sometimes we don’t really know anything about the people we call our own.

"I love how complex sibling relationships can be and I'm thrilled we get to do it over three wonderful hours and not as a 'side story'.

"Maryland is an uncomfortable, funny and sometimes difficult story with two sisters at its heart and we can’t wait to take our audience along for the ride."

I'm finding it infuriating that they didn't film in the Isle of Man (which I know really well) and find this really jarring. Why make such a big thing about the Isle of Man in the storyline and not go there?

lazymum99 · 22/05/2023 22:01

This is good. The father definitely knows something

NCTDN · 22/05/2023 22:06

It's not really filmed in the Isle of Man? That's a shame.

tommyshelbysbunnit · 22/05/2023 22:06

I'm finding it a bit slow

Mercedesbenz2022 · 22/05/2023 22:09

It’s so slow , not impressed either
and I normally love Suranne Jones
left DP to and and I’ve gone to bed

TheManxOneOnTheThread · 22/05/2023 22:13

Christ what a load a shite. Apart from a minute of 'stock footage' of Peel from postcard-world, it was generic Irish coast with some implanted Scouse accents.

Can't see the point really. That's not the Isle of Man. Really horrible appropriation.

rockingbird · 22/05/2023 22:17

I enjoyed it, dad definitely knows more than he's letting on.

boilingstormyseas · 22/05/2023 22:21

Calling one person Quayle, adding some local stock photos and putting the three legs of Mann on a random wall does not the Isle of Man make. Where are the Manx accents, the familiar views. It's quite insulting to the Manx to film it in some random place and pretend that they're in the island.

Piggywaspushed · 22/05/2023 22:27

They did a similar thing recently with that one about the fisherman. Ireland is cheaper for filming.

Exactly. We Manx do bloody exist. Our Island exists. Our accent, dialect, names, culture and life exist.

5foot5 · 22/05/2023 22:39

So I can understand that those of you from Isle of Man, or who know it well, might be hacked off. But speaking as someone who doesn't know the island well, I enjoyed this first episode and am intrigued enough to want to watch more.

Clawdy · 22/05/2023 22:54

Rather slow, but will carry on watching. Liking the tense edgy relationship between the sisters, very realistic.

AnyFucker · 22/05/2023 23:08

Rather slow and daft me didn’t twig it wasn’t the IOM but I will watch again tomorrow

benfoldsfivefan · 23/05/2023 08:52

I thought it was OK but not especially gripping. Episodes 2 and 3 are on ITVX but despite having not much to do today I'm not tempted to watch them before going out this evening.

I usually love Eve Best but her crap accent in this is a bit distracting.

Is it because Isle of Man isn't part of the UK , a passport is needed to visit . Maybe they have laws about filming there , I don't know ?

I thought this was quite good , until we found out the women's mother had found her mum , I thought there would be a more exciting twist ! I imagine her husband knows due to her having made her mum's home her own and the travelling back and forth .

Batmansmummy · 23/05/2023 11:22

Also a manxy here and Im irrationally irritated by it . Especially the fairy bridge scene that was defo not our fairy bridge I don't get why they would set it here and not film it here the 2 Manx people they've spoke to are scouse and no Manx person I've heard would say that peel is along the coast 😂 other than that the story line seems ok so far and i may continue watching if I can see past the fact it's not my beloved island

It's not part of the UK (or EU) but it is part of the Common Travel Area (CTA) and so there is free movement within that area which comprises the UK, Ireland the and crown dependencies of the Isle of Man and 'the Channel Islands'.

However, you normally do need a photo ID like a passport to get onto flights e.g. EasyJet on or off the Island - a source of endless discussions and arguments for many! I've never been asked for ID on a ferry though.

The Isle of Man actually has a thriving and welcoming filming industry.

Piggywaspushed · 23/05/2023 14:03

Tax breaks and cheaper labour are the reasons for filming in Ireland. Not for not filming in Man, as it were. I don't get the Fairy Bridge bit either. If you aren't making a film in the place you allege it is set why be so specific with details (the writer herself has commented on the 'specificity' of the location : will link in a bit)

As a side note, loads of stuff has been filmed in Hungary lately, pretending to be various UK locations, most unconvincingly. I guess at least Budapest wasn't masquerading as Douglas!!

Piggywaspushed · 23/05/2023 14:06

Here's what she said:

Filming mainly took place in Ireland, speaking about filming there, writer Annie O'Connor said: "I lived in Ireland for a time. I went to university in Galway for a year, all my family are from Tipperary. My writing career started there; I wrote two novels in Ireland when I was younger. Not only did I go to university there, when I was in my mid-20s, I moved back and lived in Dublin, and worked, in a previous life, as a PA in Dublin city centre. So, I’ve got such a kinship with Ireland, and I go there all the time. All the family are there.
"So yes, I love Ireland although I was really disappointed not be able to use the Isle of Man. I would have loved to film there. There’s a real specificity to the island. But I think we’ve done a really good job of selling the Isle of Man with Ireland and the locations that we found."

Not sure why she didn't set the story in Ireland!!Problem solved. No details as to why they 'couldn't ' film in Man. Possibly permissions around road closures. Tax and budget also a possibility.

ITV Maryland filming locations: Where was the drama filmed?

The new six-part series from Suranne Jones is set in Manchester and Isle of Man but that's not where the ITV drama was filmed

That's so weird. I agree, just set the thing in Ireland.

And yes the fairy bridge stuff was nuts - why would a Liverpudlian taxi driver be so insistent on saying hello to the little people with Mancunian visitors? It's all a bit cos-play.

I hope it's not all about drugs. And if it is, I hope it shows a Deemster throwing the book at people, if they really want to reflect the 'specificity' of the place. (Does anyone remember Deemster Moyle??! Talk about hard line.)

florentina1 · 23/05/2023 15:06

is anyone else binge watching

Jellykat · 23/05/2023 18:30

Well i dont know Blondes, missed off your list, yet again !
<runs off weeping and wailing>

Anywho... i enjoyed it last night, a slow pace but that was ok, i'm sure it'll pick up as more unfolds...
Rather disappointed that my 'Grease' hero (Stockard Channing) has messed with her face, i wanted a sneery mouth like hers when younger, now she sadly cant move it Sad

It happens all the time. It's not an insult. Largely it's to do with financial incentives and ease of filming.
