A2A reminds me of a programe I saw once called 'the black and blue lamp' about a 1950's criminal coming to the present day - I love time travel/heaven stuff - 'A matter of life and death' is one of my favourite films of all time!

abr1de · 24/05/2010 09:45

There are some films in that vein, too, aren't there? Has anyone seen the film about the US airmen who crash in the desert and are killed ,but they don't realise this for ages?

And, of course, The Others. I think that's what it's called, with Nicole Kidman as a mother who doesn't realise that she and her children are ghosts.

BoffinMum · 24/05/2010 14:35

So it's career specific, then?

Does this mean when I die (presumably battered to death by Government Higher Education policy) I will have to spend a period of time in academic purgatory marking student essays and battling with administrators until I am finally let into the staff canteen?

I am changing career to become a chocolate tester or something.

BoffinMum · 24/05/2010 14:36

Does anyone think there's parallels to Beteljuice or whatever it was called?

All the suicide victims in that had to become harrassed social workers to atone for their 'sin'.

Trouvere · 24/05/2010 15:06

The film about the crashed plane is Sole Survivor, based very loosely on the story of the B24 Lady Be Good. Creepy. Also, William Shatner in a fairly non-hammy performance.

LillianGish · 24/05/2010 16:04

I don't understand why, if Gene died on Coronation day, he was such a man of the 70s. Same with Shaz - if she died in 1995 why wasn't she as bemused as Sam and Alex by her sexist environment?

UnquietDad · 24/05/2010 16:17

There's a similar film with Robert Powell, isn't there? Where he doesn't realise he actually died in an aeroplane crash. Jenny Agutter is in it too.

ADuckCalledBill · 24/05/2010 16:25

DH and I thought it was an excellent resolution to the series. I was gutted Alex died though leaving Molly behind.
I agree with those who said the kiss wasn't sexy though, I wanted a weak at the knees snog I have to say PG is swoonsome as Gene Hunt but I was so disappointed when I heard someone on radio 1 saying they had met him on set and he'd been a real lovie .
Daniel wotsit was excellent at the end, I hope he gets a nod for his acting too. I saw him in another series as a real hapless eejit so it took a few episodes to get used to him like this but by the end he was vile

SlartyBartFast · 24/05/2010 16:36

i didnt like the fact that they kissed at all.

drloves · 24/05/2010 16:37

Right just so i get it...
Gene is dead , but has the role of protecting the newly dead ,until they adjust to being dead?
Alex is dead , but was in coma to begin with.

Neilson is st peter /god and the pub is heaven.
the creepy bloke Jim is the devil .
the lift is the gateway to hell.
Jim hates gene ,because gene stops him getting souls to hell.
is Gene an angel then? (think st micheal , aka gods hitman - fights the devil.) Is that why he didnt get to go to the pub in the end ?

Donbon · 24/05/2010 17:49

Phew drloves. I was wondering last night when I caught the recording. I would concur with all you say - since that was my understanding too (but I would also have prefaced with "Right, just so I get it..."

ADuckCalledBill · 24/05/2010 17:58

I don't think he is an angel it is just that he chooses to stay in purgatory helping other dead police officers until they are ready to go to heaven....maybe but then why did it take Ray, Shaz and Chris so long... Can't we get the writers on for a live webchat mnet HQ?!

mrsruffallo · 24/05/2010 18:27

Because they forgot about the world they came from, just as Alex seemed to be forgetting about Molly in this series..it all fades and Gene didn't want to remind them

fartmeistergeneral · 24/05/2010 19:04

check out the excellent link further down!

dollius · 24/05/2010 20:18

The others didn't question anything because they died immediately. Sam and Alex were in comas, so still had a link to reality which is why they were challenging this reality.
Sam woke up from his coma, and then committed suicide, and then Gene helped him find the light in the pub because Sam knew he was dead so couldn't stick around. Alex did not wake up from her coma, and Gene would have kept her with him for as long as poss until she discovered she was, in fact, dead after all.
Phew!

ifancyashandy · 24/05/2010 21:08

Am confused - what happened to Viv then? If he was 'killed' by Keates, does that mean he went down in the lift?!

Coz that can't be right, can it?!

(sorry if this has already been addressed - did look through the thread but couldn't see it)

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 24/05/2010 21:11

when viv died his soul was taken by keats in the finale chris said he dreamt that viv was crouching and surrounded by fire

ifancyashandy · 24/05/2010 21:15

Oh. I missed Chris saying that.

Can't believe they (scriptwriter types) let that happen to Viv. He was one of the good guys.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 24/05/2010 21:23

I know ifancyashandy - his 'sins' didn't seem as extreme as someone like Ray's, for example. He killed a man. I know he atoned for his sin, but still. I don't like to think of Viv in Hell

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 24/05/2010 21:24

Oh, and I'd love to know how Annie died in RL. Was she murdered by Sam's Dad? If so, I thought he managed to stop that when he went back in time. Sorry if this has been answered already, or I'm being dim....

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 24/05/2010 21:25

i know, i really felt sorry for him. he made a mistake and it was sheer bad luck that keats got to him before gene.

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 24/05/2010 21:26

ineed, i think she was murdered by sams dad which is why she was there in the first place iykwim, the crimes they solve in purgatory arent real crimes.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 24/05/2010 21:33

Thanks TLOTGK - I couldn't get my head round the time travel thing (I thought it was time travel at the time of watching LOM).

TheLadyOfTheGreenKirtle · 24/05/2010 21:34

i know. i need to watch LOM and A2A now in order, it'll be like watching a different show!
