Ive asked this several times and i apologise if anyone has answered and i have missed it but what i want to know is in episode one when Arthur was about to shoot Alex he phones someone and tells them that he has a piece of their past........... Who was he phoning??

dct · 23/05/2010 08:40

It was her god father Evan, Layton was blackmailing him

OneTwoBollyMyQuattro · 23/05/2010 09:27

Shaz had a Mum in this reality as she often said to Chris she was at her mums.

However, I think it was similar to series one episode 8 of LOM where Morgan takes Sam to see his "parents" graves, the Williams and he sees Ruth and Vic Tyler died in 1800s.

Shaz got given a new set of parents.

To quote another great film "We accept the reality with which we are presented. It is as simple as that."

As a Rick Wakeman (Yes) fan, it is good to know that his keyboard playing will be heard in the entrance to heaven. And Bowie too!!

Thought the Dixon of Dock Green thing was meant to remind the viewer of the period in which Gene Hunt died and up the emotional impact just that little bit more.

The Dixon of Dock Green shot is explained here

Vicar, are you sure your DH hasn't been reading Den of Geek?!

cometherevolution · 23/05/2010 12:04

sorry if this has been covered before, but any idea why sam wanted gene to help him fake his death?

Clydesdale · 23/05/2010 12:53

YAY - worked it out!! Finally got to watch it last night and was dead chufed I was one of the ones that worked it out!!

The line that reallygot mewas the "it's the way of the world, she'll be ok' from Gene when Alexsaid 'Molly'. OH handed me the tissues at that point! was in floods!! I too think she should hav stayed at his side helping out!

OneTwoBollyMyQuattro · 23/05/2010 17:44

cometherevolution Perhaps to stop the Keats character from getting to him, I reckon he takes on different guises in different eras

Hermya321 · 23/05/2010 19:07

WOW!!! That was so COOOLLLL!!!Brilliant ending, I'm glad they did it that way.

What was going on with Keats in the end though??!!!

Clydesdale · 23/05/2010 19:44

have any of you ever seen the film called 'a matter of life and death'? Soooo many parallels!

1Littleboy1Bigboy · 23/05/2010 20:26

sorry to ask this but why does gene call alex bolly?

iMum · 23/05/2010 20:28

Wasnt she clutching a bottle of champers in the first ep?

diddl · 23/05/2010 20:33

Surely it was a lie about faking Sam´s death?

OneTwoBollyMyQuattro · 23/05/2010 20:35

Gene says that Alex is a posh tart (before he knows she is his new DI) who would drop her knickers for a drop of Bolly, hence Bollyknickers etc

fartmeistergeneral · 23/05/2010 22:05

we need the writers here on MN to answer these final few questions!

BexJ78 · 23/05/2010 22:06

We noticed that apart from Alex (and Sam in LoM) you only ever saw the main characters in the police station, or in the pub/Luigis. Sort of odd but guess it shows how absorbed in their 'new' life they became and how Gene's team was everything to them.

Also, we thought that the deaths in RL were probably:
Gene - 50's
Chris - 60's
Ray-70's
Shaz 90's.

Need to go and rewatch though.

BexJ78 · 23/05/2010 22:15

Actually, on looking at it again, actually think Chris's death might have been later than the 60's...perhaps the 80's...but then not sure how the whistle fits with that.

Longtimeinthe1980s · 23/05/2010 22:18

The answers

GeorginaWorsley · 23/05/2010 22:58

I agree with those dates,bex

CaveMum · 23/05/2010 23:16

The Daily Mail is saying Ray died in 1976, Chris in 'late70s/early 80s' and Shaz in 1995.
Those dates make sense to me, though Shaz and Ray were fairly obvious, Chris' uniform seemed too modern to be 60s.

I've started watching Life on Mars again today, maybe I'm reading too much into it but there seem to be a few things that now stand out - background music, etc.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/05/2010 23:17

ha ha - no DH hasnt read 'den of geek' whatever that is!

he loves old telly though - he got it straight away while we were watching it, while i was still trying to work out if Alex was dead or not (doh!)

no flies on my DH!

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/05/2010 23:33

gene did indeed call alex 'bolly knickers' because in the first episode she was dressed as a prostitute clutching a bottle of bollinger champagne when he found her.

BitOfFunInTheQuattro · 24/05/2010 00:48

Longtime, that was a great link, thankyou.

abr1de · 24/05/2010 09:11

I've seen a Matter of Life and Death and was remarking on the parallels, Clydesdale.

I was also rewatching the episode at the end of A2A series 1 and Gene also rescues Alex then in her little girl persona, when she's watching her parents' car blow up. He scoops her up and takes her to the station and is very tender with her. A foreshadowing of what happens at the very end of this series.
