I thought it would be high time to get the TARDIS party going, now we're on a countdown. Has anyone else seen the clip from the first episode yet? Looking like good fun. I might even be persuaded to squee.

DD2 has shown me her screamer mask everytime I have upset her today downloads.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/d11s01/d11s01e02_smiler_mask.pdf - she was really pleased that we downloaded it!

gorionine · 11/04/2010 14:51

Thanks Idontknowhowtohelpher, my Dcs will love it!

SoupDragon · 11/04/2010 16:01

Those smiler things were shaping up to be a fabulously creepy enemy and they simply didn't fulfil that promise. What a waste.

Pixel · 11/04/2010 19:00

There was only one star whale and Scotland wanted their own ship. What did they have, a star penguin?

KayHarker · 11/04/2010 19:11

On a rewatch I thought the episode was quite weak, and the resolution left something to be desired.

Moffat is very good at setting up atmospheric scariness, but he's less good at resolving what to do with the creatures he creates. The Vashta Nerada are a good example - a really threatening monster and they just give up when the Doctor says some fairly pompous words. Similarly here, the Smilers are spooky and unpleasant, but it's all fudged over at the end.

I agree.
Hope it's not going to be a problem throughout the series...

cornsilk · 11/04/2010 19:18

yes that was a shite ending

cornsilk · 11/04/2010 19:19

I think I could get sick of Amy's wide eyed pouty look quite soon.

JaneS · 11/04/2010 21:41

Ok, I've been reading this thread as I've not really seriously watched Dr Who before (except the 2009 special over DP's shoulder) - what the heck is the pornography debate?! How did you get from there to porn? My mind is normally in the gutter, and I had no idea it was supposed to be a family show, but I just assumed he was meant to delete history because of the top-secret science stuff, no?

I did find Amy very sexy though!

Wasn't as good as the first episode. However, I really do like the casting for it.

Especially demon headmaster!!

RedTartanLass · 11/04/2010 22:12

Well I loved it! I even cried at the end, but hey I cry at anything now . Agree with Pixel though, what did Scotland use?

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 12/04/2010 11:52

A ship powered by Irn Bru, I expect.

farmerjones · 12/04/2010 12:35

scotland had all the brains. they made themselves af aster than light spaceship, powered by old fashioned machinery, and have already been inhabiting the planet scotland for the last two hundred and eighty years.

Pixel · 12/04/2010 18:59

No-one in England could afford to go to university you see...

I did wonder why they had to keep the whale moving. Where were they off to in such a hurry?

Pixel · 12/04/2010 19:13

Actually now I'm imagining old fashioned machinery. Can't get rid of the idea of a giant Flying Scotsman.

Hermya321 · 12/04/2010 20:44

Staying LOL!!!

wintera · 12/04/2010 20:54

I am loving Matt Smith as the doctor, I think he is doing a great job. He has a very interesting face. Sometimes he looks weird and kind of ugly . . . other times I think he looks quite nice. I like actors like that, they have a bit more to them. Makes them more interesting. I also liked Liz 10 and hope she comes back again! And what was that business about Elizabeth I and the Doctor? Intriguing!

CaveMum · 12/04/2010 21:41

wintera in David Tennant's last episode when he goes to meet the Ood and says he had things to do before seeing them, he says something about meeting Elizabeth I and that "that nickname isn't going to work anymore"! Obviously referring to the "Virgin Queen"!

Have to say I was disappointed with Saturday's episode after the promise of the first one, but I'll give it another chance. I don't have a problem with Matt Smith but the writing seems weak.

aloevera · 12/04/2010 22:08

Not as great for me here either this week. Last week was brill, so I have high hopes, but I thought the story and the acting in places was a bit rubbish. Only a bit though . Actually on second watch I thought it was a bit better.

They did labour the point about lonely star whale = lonely doctor, and it was all a bit angst/DT/RTD, but I wondered if they were trying to smooth the transition??

I also thought it was a bit Discworld at the end! And had to go back and check Moffat wrote it, because it just didn't feel like his usual stuff.

It's interesting seeing how they are making MS's doc have an older feel to him, a bit uni prof/eccentric uncle which he seems to be pulling off quite well. I wonder if they are doing it to 'balance' it because MS is so young? Would have loved to see them embrace it and put him in a hoodie or something though.

aloevera · 12/04/2010 22:10

"There was only one star whale and Scotland wanted their own ship. What did they have, a star penguin?" ROFL brilliant

Rolf · 12/04/2010 22:13

Does anyone think Matt Smith is a little bit like that lovely midwife Dominique from One Born Every Minute?

Nymphadora · 12/04/2010 22:44

Moffat wrote it? not his usual standard at all it was a bit RTD

RustyBear · 16/04/2010 14:11

Just been watching The Fires of Pompeii again - anyone in Scotland turning to stone yet....?

KayHarker · 16/04/2010 17:20

Keep an eye out for people with wristbands on and eyes painted on the backs of their hands.

Disclaimer I don't know if this is really common practice in Scotland
