I thought it would be high time to get the TARDIS party going, now we're on a countdown. Has anyone else seen the clip from the first episode yet? Looking like good fun. I might even be persuaded to squee.

Given that you made the assumption that it was porn, it is only your fault that you are offended. It is whinging when there was no direct mention of, nor sight of, porn.

HerBeatitude · 07/04/2010 13:38

I think you're being disingenuous.

It is perfectly reasonable to assume that it is porn - as I said before, it is a very cleverly done piece, which can snigger and wink to one audience while presenting an innocent face to another, less accomodating audience.

Rather like quite a lot of porn culture stuff.

(God, all those people who get offended by FCUK, eh? I mean, it doesn't mean anything does it, they've all got really dirty minds...)

confuddledDOTcom nope, sorry still don't get it .
No doubt it will all become clear in time!

(see what I did there )

HerBeatitude · 07/04/2010 20:33

LOL Reality your DD obviously has a very dirty mind!

(What posh shampoo you have

SoupDragon · 07/04/2010 22:28

How exactly am I being disingenuous? I am neither insincere, deceitful, dishonest, devious, designing, guileful, wily, sly, blah blah blah. I was simply stating my POV.

Yes, I think it was clearly referring to porn but I am not in the least bit offended by it given that it wasn't shown nor blatantly referred to in full descriptive glory. DSs (11 and 9) didn't notice it at all/didn't think it worthy of questioning.

Given the amount of death and violence* in Dr Who in general, I think a sniggering adult aside is barely worthy of note. Interesting that violence is OK yet sex is not (whether porn or Amy's short skirt)/watching the Dr undress)

(* which I have no issue about)

HerBeatitude · 08/04/2010 08:07

Well, on the one hand you imply that I am somehow unreasonable to assume it's porn and I chose to be offended by something that may not be there and on the other hand you state clearly that you think it's porn. I'm sure there's another word than disingenuous for that but it's too early in the morning for me to think of it.

I wouldn't use the word offended in this context anyway. I'm not offended, I'm angry that the pornification of our culture is proceeding apace with no significant resistance. If mothers on a website are OK with the normalisation of the porn culture and the effect that that is having on our children's expectations of sex and relationships, then I guess we can't expect much resistance from other groups in society, particularly the men who control the media.

The chip chip chipping into our attitudes and the expectation that we laugh all sexism and references to porn off because we are somehow uptight old bags if we don't, is a brilliantly effective weapon to ensure that anyone who wants our daughters to grow up in a world where they are equally valued as our sons, can dream on. I accept that this one little TV scene is just a tiny little thing, but it's the millions of tiny little things like this, which add up to a culture where girls are constantly being told that they can expect to be objectified all the time and if they object, it's because they are uptight and unreasonable.

noeyedear · 08/04/2010 14:34

I didn't think they were 'normalising' porn at all- it was an adult joke, and MS said 'get a girlfriend, Jeff', which surely intimates that to be looking at internet porn is a bit sad, and he should get himself a real woman, no?

confuddledDOTcom · 08/04/2010 14:50

Pixel, whatever the human looking self might look like (that he has lost 11 years) the Doctor is still getting older. The 11th Doctor is older than the 10th Doctor, whatever he looks like. River Song would know that the incarnation she met in the library is Ten and that she wasn't married to Ten, she was married to Eleven/ Tweleve/ Thirteen/ older?

AitchTwoZone · 08/04/2010 16:12

i don't think the fact that he was saying it's a bit sad is the point, though. it's that unquestioning thing, that men automatically have the right to wank over naked women on the internet and the worst thing that they can be accused of is being a bit sad... it is pretty depressing that it's on dr who, tbh.

Kaloki · 09/04/2010 16:23

Maybe there's a directors cut where Doctor Who lectures him at length on the objectifying of women and the suffragette movement.. and then the world ends.

SleepingLion · 09/04/2010 18:34

Agree with SoupDragon that there is so much comment on porn whereas violence goes unmentioned... I suppose everyone has their own particular drum to beat though but I would be far more disturbed by my DS seeing some of the quite explicit violence on programmes aimed at children than I would be by him hearing the implicit reference to porn on Dr Who.

noeyedear · 10/04/2010 10:42

Actually, now Soupdragon puts it like that, I do agree. It's too easy to say men should be expected to be looking at porn on the internet, and that they shouldn't be thinking about the objectification of women or the rights and wrongs of the pornographic industry.

AitchTwoZone · 10/04/2010 17:03

i've always thought of dr who as a spectacularly non-violent hero figure, tbh, so i'm not sure the 'well no-one moans about the violence' thing holds water.

SleepyDopeyGrumpy · 10/04/2010 18:20

Finally!!!

SoupDragon · 10/04/2010 18:25

"i'm not sure the 'well no-one moans about the violence' thing holds water. "

How about the daleks and cybermen killing people? I'm sure there are many other violent aliens. The Dr himself isn't spectacularly violent (in so far as he won't use a gun) but there is no shortage of violence/death/destruction.

Nymphadora · 10/04/2010 18:52

Caught up on episode 1 just in time for ep 2. Loving the Queen!

Hermya321 · 10/04/2010 19:26

I know, I thought the addition of the ledgend of the Starwhale was pretty cool.

KayHarker · 10/04/2010 19:35

oo oo, did you see the crack at the end. Wonder what that's all about.

OP posts:
Katisha · 10/04/2010 19:36

I feel somewhat about the latest episode.
And more lonely old doctor zzzzzzzzzz Was hoping we might get a bit less of that with the departure of RTD.

confuddledDOTcom · 10/04/2010 19:42

I like the line "I find a new name"

KayHarker · 10/04/2010 19:46

He's not mopey with it, though. I can cope with the idea that he's lonely and needs a companion as long as that's not accompanied by ad nauseum shots of him looking into the middle distance.

Got to say I think they should call time on Confidential. It's a bit repetitious and nauseating at times.

OP posts:
Katisha · 10/04/2010 19:52

Have given up on Confidential, Even DCs not bothered about it any more.
They go on as if every word of the script is sent from On High.

EggyAllenPoe · 10/04/2010 20:46

loved it - started off scary....did get a bit bleh towards theend htouhg. should have stuck with the frighty approach longer, and she shoul dhave been angry with him for being judgy abut humaniy when he would have killed the beast without thinking through alternatives long enough.

EggyAllenPoe · 10/04/2010 20:47

noeyedear is right.
