yippee!! on now.

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 09/07/2009 09:07

Well, yes, it's The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so they could have got that right - I'm not sure who I thought would be upset!

bunnyrabbit · 09/07/2009 09:16

All the pedants!!

AppleTreeWick · 09/07/2009 09:21

Morning all

Just wanted to say "oooooh Ianto" to someone.

Still while I'm here ....
Am liking Gwen & hubby much more this series but agree she needs to learn to shoot better and why did it take them three episodes to start nicking stuff they needed?

Alice should have shot the naughty lady.

Am not missing Mr Owen or Tosh at all

Less jazz hands from Cpt J this series and therefore much improved. And anyway he sent a child off to live with the bad fairies in Series One didn't he? A decision my DH has still to forgive him for. So he has recent form in the "handing over kiddies to aliens" stakes.

Ianto ...more solid certainly yet still biddable I think

ooooh Ianto

UnquietDad · 09/07/2009 09:33

The "who's the queer?" line was an interesting touch, as was Ianto's response. And the less-than-comfortable attitude of his BIL as well. All too often in the past in Torchwood it's looked as Cardiff is some Utopian bubble of metrosexual cool where everybody is totally fine about everybody else's sexuality - and while this may be seen as desirable it's not, at the moment, a reflection of real life. This was the first such puncturing of the "bubble" that we've seen.

(I realise child-eating aliens from outer space are not exactly a reflection of real life either.)

mrsmortenharket · 09/07/2009 09:47

yay torchwood! tho bit fed up it only on 5 nights instead of a series like normal.

jack's family?

ianto is definitely more solid, more of a man than a grown up boy iyswim.

jack's arse ... mmm but if he got put in the bag in bits with bits of clothes on, surely he would have had bits of clothes still on him? did anyone else see the shot when he clearly had some form of underwear on, then the next shot you clearly see his arse?!

the chair in the lift thing was definitely to stop other people coming up.

it would have looked suspicious to be writing everything down but then not half as suspsicious to be sidling round the room!

Tee2072 · 09/07/2009 09:50

I am still at Lois being allowed to go to Thames House the first time, never mind that whatsherface believed the affair story the second time. She's a temp, for goodness sake! I do agree that she should have just taken shorthand on what everyone was saying. Especially since she was behind everyone's back and they never would have known.

And I agree the chair in the lift was to keep others from coming up...but what about the stairs?!?!

UnquietDad · 09/07/2009 09:57

From what I know, in the original draft, Lois The Plot Device's role would have been filled by Martha Jones.

She'd have been brought in as someone with "alien" experience, but not a formal part of Torchwood and therefore warily trusted by the authorities.

However, Freema Agyeman was unavailable because of other filming commitments (CSI London?)

pigswithfludontfly · 09/07/2009 10:02

Yep Lois is a bit unbelievable. Nasty lady from UNIT is too much of a cliche for me.

bunnyrabbit · 09/07/2009 10:11

But Martha worked for UNIT so even more unbeleivable as far as I'm concerned.

I didn't think the nasty lady was from UNIT? I thought UNIT were unaware of a lot of the goings on.

Nasty lady = pantomime villian a the mo.... and she does have the most ridiculous run!

AppleTreeWick · 09/07/2009 10:16

I am enjoying Ianto's family - comedy yes but also believeable in a sort of ultra realism/coronation street sort of way.

UQD BiL is less than comfortable sure but he's not uncomfortable...there's a whole scale of "how comfortable am I with working alongside gay colleagues in the army" that I was reading about yesterday on Guardian online. Don't Ask Dont Care is the title if you're interested. I can't do links sorry. The research seemed to suggest that the army was becoming much more accepting and less hung up about sexuality...reflecting society?

The "who's the queer" comment though was said with such vitriol and clearly meant as an insult none of this post modern blx. Ianto responded well I thought and with none of the fudging denial "it's not men just Jack" of just a day earlier.

aaaah Ianto

sockmonkey · 09/07/2009 10:52

DH told me that "Frobisher" was a name used in one of the earlier DW series by a shape shifting alien. Could be a link??

Loving it so far.

Just waiting for Gwen to do her signiture jumping sideways while shooting move again.

UnquietDad · 09/07/2009 10:56

Frobisher was a shape-shifting alien, but only in the comics. He stayed in the form of a penguin, mostly. Don't ask me why!

hockeypuck · 09/07/2009 11:05

I too wonder why the alien mimicked Fobisher - it was definitely a different voice than the laptop software.

The whole Lois getting access thing is ridiculous - but it's not as if aliens landing in Thames House is exactly common place.

I am disturbed by the fact that in my head I was wondering exactly which 10% of the children of earth would be expendable!

AppleTreeWick · 09/07/2009 11:08

And why is UNIT unconcerned with the big hole in the ground where Torchwood used to be - surely they've noticed?

LoveBuckets · 09/07/2009 11:18

YOu'd think Martha would cut short her honeymoon as soon as the first global child-freezing thing occurred, wouldn't you?

Sounds like the 456 must have had a convincing enough threat to barter Xnumber of kids in return for f*cking off. The British very quietly saved the world with the sacrifice in good faith.

I had thought perhaps it was the missing kids who were coming back to vreak their rewengay.

thell · 09/07/2009 11:19

Hmm, the guy sitting next to the US Army fella was from UNIT, and really annoyed that they had been kept in the dark, so I don't think Nasty Lady is from UNIT.
(but then I missed the fiorst half of Monday's episode.)

I too was wondering why Martha hadn't been involved yet.

Ianto is quite nice, isn't he?

hockeypuck · 09/07/2009 11:20

I am also peturbed by the speed in which they go from Torchwood to London. Is the HUB 2 nearer London then? as it looks like the valleys to me!

If it is in London, then why were they stealing things from Cardiff (laptops and credit cards stolen from benches and HaHas on the Friary in Cardiff).

Ripeberry · 09/07/2009 11:23

Only viewers who know Cardiff will notice....shush!

UnquietDad · 09/07/2009 11:27

hockeypuck - I bet you are not the only one!

3 children from every class in every school...

I'm sure that kind of thinking is precisely what the next episode is about.

By the end of the week Lois will be either on the team or dead. Both options are looking obvious!

RustyBear · 09/07/2009 11:34

I'm sitting at my desk in a junior school, creating classlists for next year.

Could pick out 3 from each class, no trouble...

LoveBuckets · 09/07/2009 11:38

Oh we are deffo being groomed to accept Lois for the new series. They won't do 2 red herrings in one serial, they already teased us with Dr Rupesh didn't they? And Ianto doesn't have any special talents really, other than what he's learnt at Torchwood.

LOL at excessive jazz hands

Is it just me... or does that "isn't it, isn't it?" thing Clem is doing over his shoulder remind anyone of Donna having that creature on her back?
