For the record, I was thrilled about Catherine Tate's casting, and wasn't at all disappointed, except when she left.

Off to write more fanfic now (and put the ironing away - oh, how I hate not really being a teenager!! )

KayHarkerIsGlum · 04/01/2009 15:19

I say this in all honesty, I am quite prepared and happy for him to charm me. I am willing him to charm me. But he can keep his hands off my pants.

(I don't simper. Good god, woman, simper? )

JackieNo · 04/01/2009 15:24

'But he can keep his hands off my pants' - presumably unless he's actually volunteering to put your ironing away, eh . (or at least, your washing, I assume you don't iron your pants...)

pointydog · 04/01/2009 15:26

the bet's on

you
will
simper

KayHarkerIsGlum · 04/01/2009 15:31

I do not iron my pants. My pants are teeny things which would be ridiculous to iron. And I am quite happy to remain the person who puts them away.

If he wants to actually do the ironing for me, that's fine. I shall warm up to him very quickly.

If I simper over Smith, you have my solemn word I will change my name to reflect it. But really, simpering is such an effete thing to do. I'm hoping to be an enthusiastic puppy about him eventually. I hope I'll never simper about anyone in my life, ever.

paolosgirl · 04/01/2009 16:17

DD has just reiterated that he is not, and never will be, Dr Who. When pressed for an explanation, she just shrugs and says "you can just tell."

It's hard to explain, but he just does not have the screen presence and that certain something. He'll be OK, because the writing is so strong, the supporting cast will be there to bulk things up - and everyone knows the monsters make the show really

Catherine Tate was always going to be fab - why on earth would anyone doubt that? But Matt Smith - nope. He'll be forever known as 'the one after David Tennent' - I guarantee it. There's simply nothing there to lift him out of the ordinary.

UnquietDad · 04/01/2009 16:21

Lots of people thinking that a Smith's will be like a Tennant's-lite. I feel that, like the eponymous beverages, it will be darker and less fizzy.

paolosgirl · 04/01/2009 16:25

Dh's explanation was that the BBC are trying to save money in the current economic crisis

cornsilk · 04/01/2009 16:26

Is he on a youth training scheme then?

KayHarkerDoesNotSimper · 04/01/2009 16:29

I think for some people, he just has a credibility problem. I don't think he will be forgotten as the 'one after Tennant' - he's got Moffat as show-runner, and a largely clean-slate to begin with in terms of story-strands.

There's this 'darker' thing coming through from the promo-shots, and some of the comments I've seen, but I'm not sure it's more than wishful thinking because he's got the 'twilight' thing going on.

Besides, we had 'darker' with Chris E. battle-scarred and traumatized, and I'm not 100% convinced that Moffat wants to do darker, really, despite his scary reputation, he's quite a fluffy-bunny in terms of body count. He gave us 'Everybody Lives!' after all.

Do you know, it's nearly 24 hours, and I'm actually properly getting interested in how it's going to work. Curse my fickle ways! Not simpering though. Raising one curious eyebrow and folding arms.

KayHarkerDoesNotSimper · 04/01/2009 16:30

roffle @ 'YTS'

paolosgirl · 04/01/2009 16:31

LOL Cornsilk

Could be that the monsters were in need of some upgrading, so they went for someone who could do a passable impersonation of DT, who was a younger emo type (they'd no doubt done a few surveys and this age group was missing from their target audience) and who they could get for a lot less than the older, better more experienced actors. The licence payers are kept happy and the money could be spent on tarting up the Daleks.

UnquietDad · 04/01/2009 16:33

TBH I don't think it's the monsters that are the problem. Lots can be done with CGI now which is relatively cheap. What costs a lot is time and sets and location shooting.

KayHarkerDoesNotSimper · 04/01/2009 16:33

Oh, there had better not be any bloody Daleks. I am Dalekd-out.

UnquietDad · 04/01/2009 16:35

Would be fun if they were nice Daleks from a parallel universe - a sort of intergalactic police force who only exterminated ne'er-do-wells.

cornsilk · 04/01/2009 16:38

God yes new monsters please. I am feckin sick of cybermen myself. What about some zombies or vampires? We've had a werewolf after all.

paolosgirl · 04/01/2009 16:38

But you cannot take CGI on the road, and the Dr Who exhibition was pretty popular.

You can't have Dr Who without the Daleks - wash your mouth out woman!!!

Nah - still the wrong choice IMO. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 04/01/2009 16:39

If they stopped paying Jonathan Ross such a huge fortune, they'd be able to spend a loads on this. Instead, we'll go back to the good old days of shakey scenery and dodgy monsters. Just you wait....

And what exactly is EMO? Is it goth-lite for the attention-span-deficit generation and those who find the Smiths altogether too challenging?

paolosgirl · 04/01/2009 16:46

Agree Zebs. Pay off Jonathan Ross and give us a good Dr Who!

Emo - The term "Emo" is used as counterculture; it is an abreviation of the word "emotional". Emo it's defining not only an attitude, but also a fashion that are coming from emocore (emo music). Emocore is a combination between hardcore and punk music which was very popular in Washington DC in the late 80's. The emo culture continued to develop between '90 and '00, reaching the height of its popularity today.

So yes - your definition is pretty spot on Zebs! Perhaps just add 'popular amongst middle class kids awho want to rebel without incurring too much wrath from their parents or teachers'

cornsilk · 04/01/2009 16:47

I hope he's not going to be texting and on facebook all the time.

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 04/01/2009 16:47

Sounds like a load of old b**cks to me, Paolo

LoveMyLapTop · 04/01/2009 16:49

LOL cornsilk.
Imagine the doctor updating his profile before the tardis takes off!

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 04/01/2009 16:53

OMG, the Tardis. Do you think he'll give it a complete re-design - all black with goth-lite posters all over the place? Not to mention the unmade bed and sofa for him to lounge moodily on... oh, and old pot noodles and dirty socks and grundies all over the floor for his mum (the new assistant, natch) to pick up for him.

cornsilk · 04/01/2009 16:54

lol at pot noodles. He'll be stopping off at subway all the time as well.

LoveMyLapTop · 04/01/2009 16:56

he'll listen to his ipod all the time
whilst gazing moodily at his marilyn manson posters
maybe a bit of black nail varnish
and huff and puff a lot!!
