Help me remember the actor's name

Just to satisfy my itching brain!
Had a dream last night which featured an actor walking across a car park. He seemed familiar and I'm sure he's a real person.
The problem is, I can't think of much detail.
He's the sort of person who'd be in drama things like murder mysteries or maybe period dramas of the 1920s/1930s - he'd be playing a hotel proprietor type character.
I think he's fairly tall. He's an older actor - or at least, was then - he may have died.
White hair, with a bit of a wave, sometimes worn slicked back. A bit 'jowly' but not with a particularly wide face and has a moustache.
It's NOT Richard Griffiths. There's a similarity but the actor I'm thinking of has a narrower face than that and I don't think he has glasses.

Any ideas?

It's possible that this is someone your brain constructed in your dream, and it seemed so real you think it's a real person.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g’s description brought someone to mind immediately, but I can’t remember his name either. I think I’ve seen him playing a solicitor in a murder mystery, but which one?

I wondered if it was a politician (I was guessing Douglas Hurd!)

Is it the sort of man who if he shook his jowls he'd look quite outraged/bloodhound-like? And be a bit blustery in attitude? I feel like we're getting close!

Just want to raise my chapeau to the spreadsheet. Topnotch dedication.

That's the image I have. Sort of white hair (maybe very light blond). I can see him with a small neat moustache (but not a poirot one or a toothbrush one). A bit untidy but not scruffy. Possibly fairly light on his feet but a reasonably big man.
A white/cream suit, or possibly a chunky cardigan of the same colour seem to associate with him.
As you say, not a main character - more like a backup person in a scene to give it weight, or a small plotline type person.

Is John Challis on the list?

No. He'd just wobble a bit under the chin.

Denholm Elliott - No. Not someone as well known and like Terrence Alexander, someone less conventionally attractive.

Robert Hardy - No. Hairline wrong, jaw too sharp.
Rex Harrison - No. Not as famous.
Cieran Hinds- No. His complexion is too dark, his hair is too dark, his face shape is wrong.
Phillip Jackson - No. Hair wrong, jawline wrong. Possibly someone of a similar age.
Peter Jeffrey - No. Hair too dark.
Richard Mc Cabe - No. Face shape maybe similar but Richard is too dark.
Roddy McDowall - No. Completely different face shape. Hair is wrong colour.
Malcolm McDowell - No. His eyes are too starey. This person has a longer face with double chin/jowly.
Leo McKern - No. Not Rumpole.
Frank Middlemass - No. Hairline wrong, face shape wrong.
Robert Morley - No. Not enough hair, looks too old in images I can find.
David Niven - No. Just not him. Not as famous
Donald Pleasance - No. Too bald.
Anton Rogers -No. He has dark hair and it's just not Rene
John Stride- Possibly the right sort of age but it isn't' him. Hairline may be similar.
Dudley Sutton - No. Was he in Lovejoy? (He used to creep me out, sorry)
Rupert Vansittart - No. Rupert looks less approachable, and hairline too high. Hair wrong colour.

Again, the people who look closest are Richard Griffiths/Perter Ustinov. If you combined them and made the face longer then that would be an even closer look. As @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g mentioned, definitely British, plump, wavy white-blond hair, a bit posh.
I don't know if he's been in Agatha Christie things but that's the sort of thing. A character actor rather than a comedy actor I think.

It's beginning to feel like I made him up but the clues seem to point to a real person.
I'll take a look at the wikipedia list.
I've updated the spreadsheet with all the suggestions.

The trouble with asking if someone's been in things like Agatha Christie and Morse etc is that pretty much every British actor will have done their turn in things like that at some point.

I was going to suggest James Wilby, because I often confused him with the various Foxes, but I suspect he's sl8ghtly too young.
